Beginnings

On Sundays we’ve been doing beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams books in chronological order, including those written under the Spencer Quinn pen name. Here (yes, on Monday) from 2013 – #29, A FISTFUL OF COLLARS, the fifth Chet and Bernie novel. (But does Chet care what order you read them in?) This is the Hollywood novel in the series. You will meet a cat named Brando.

[Amusing, intelligent and exciting… A fun romp through a genre that’s been around for decades but in the right hands (or paws) still has the power to entertain us.”
– Cesar’s Way]

“Heard you drove another one off a cliff,” said Nixon Panero. He spat a thin brown stream of chewing tobacco into an empty paint can, or maybe not that empty. Yellow paint, the yellow of egg yolks, now with a brown swirl in the middle: there’s all kinds of beauty in life.

“You heard wrong,” said Bernie.

Uh-oh. Bernie was looking at Nixon in an irritated sort of way. Wasn’t Nixon our buddy? True, Nixon’s eyes were too close together, even for a human, but he was one of the best mechanics in the Valley according to Bernie, and if Bernie said so then that was that, and besides, Nixon was also one of our top sources on the street, even though we once put him away for a year or so. Or maybe because of it! Anything’s possible with perps, believe me. We’ve taken down lots, me and my partner, Bernie. That’s what we do at the Little Detective Agency. He’s Bernie Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple.

Good day to B, HOH, Boo, Rose, and everyone!

Smoke-filled skies continue here…air quality very bad…it is recommended we stay indoors.

    Hello Everyone–

Dawson, thanks for the Teddy Bear picnic details (could be grim, could be charming depending on one’s energy level) and I hope you had a mahvelous time.

I agree that Chet’s reflections on the world around him are one of the very best things in life. In one book (and I forgot which) he talks about cats liking milk, and drinking it in tiny sips. Then he says something along the lines of “Cats will do anything to be irritating”. (Now I need to find out which book that’s in…)

Staff!…You say your windows are about 3 feet wide by 4 feet long…grunt!…My friend does not remember if she stored some sheers in a plastic tub in the she or not. But next time she is out there she will look and see if something is there and maybe it will fit….wheeze…One thing she hates to get rid of is curtains of any kind as they always seem to be needed….snort!

Hobbitz, we are sure you are home and just exhausted 💤 from your travels.
After you have scratched Sadie and Denali and Mr BIG and rested, let us know you are safe and sound, please.

Gosh! I wrote the nicest long post and then zapped it away! Let me try again. Books….some of the best books I have read the last 6 months have been do-overs or read agains. I have to read something while waiting for the next Chet and Bernie!

I may have recommended the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross in the past and it holds up. Also the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny is my favorite. If anyone decides to give either series a try….read in order! These stories could be free standing, but the charactors build so well it is a shame to miss out on that.

Oh that vile stuff! Prep is the worst part of the whole colonoscopy thing Hobbitz. May all go well!
