On Sunday we do beginnings. At signings I usually read the whole first scene, as I was mentioning to the folks at the beautiful Eldredge Library in Chatham (Cape Cod) the other night. When they take the book home they’ve already got a head start. Head starts are good in life, although paying a ringer to take your kid’s SAT is not how to go about it.

Here’s the beginning of the first scene of Heart of Barkness, the latest Chet and Bernie novel.

“Red-letter day, Chet,” said Sergeant Rick Torres, our buddy at the Valley PD Missing Persons Department. “In the car.”

Red-letter day was a mystery to me, and maybe red is, too. Bernie says I can’t be trusted when it comes to red, something I’ve never understood. I knew fire hydrants were red, for example, knew that as well as I know my own name. Which is Chet, in case you missed it, right up there off the jump. I also know “in the car,” and never need to be asked twice. Or even once. Rick opened the passenger-side door of the black-and-white. I hopped in, sat up nice and tall, totally alert, ready for anything. Was my tongue hanging out? Possibly. I got most of it stuffed back in. We have standards, me and Bernie, just one of the reasons that the Little Detective Agency is so successful, except for the finances part. It’s called the Little Detective Agency on account of Bernie’s last name being Little, but we’re equal partners, Bernie handling the gunplay and the so-therefores and me bringing other things to the table. Maybe we’ll get to my teeth a little later.

Chet can always make me laugh, and I will need lots of them since it is a dark day in this neck of the woods. SOB! My Yankees! SOB! Hopefully, the Nats will clean the clocks of the Astros in the World Series.

HRH,B: I hope you are holding up during your treatments.

    Good day to all!

Thank you Rose. The treatment (radiation) takes only a few minutes each time but I’m tired of having to go five days a week.

Excellent beginning. Bringing teeth to the table is Chet’s forte. Among many other things.

Exciting ending to the series last night. I came in right when the Astros were ahead by two, then it was tied, then home run! Congratulations Astros. Sorry about your Yankees, Wose.

HRH,B: Will you have to go for treatment 5 days a week during the entire time? Thinking of you daily and hoping the side effects are not too onerous. Sending strength for you.

    Good morning, all.

Wose, sorry (not sorry) about your Yankees but you have to admit it was a classic clutch ending to a great series. Yankees tie the game top of the 9th. Bottom of the 9th, two outs and Jose Altuve up to bat. Home run, baby!! And we are going to the World Series!! Mom (and therefore, me) gets too nervous to watch the game live but follows the scoring on line. Once Altuve hit the homer, Mom turned the TV to the game and then watched the game on delay. Since this worked, she and I will NOT watch the series in real time. Why take a chance on jinxing it?

Thank you Dawson. Yes it is five days each week until the end of treatment on Nov. 18. The main side effect is that I get very tired.

Sounds like the ball game was exciting.

Today!…After my thwarted attempt at recovering my Slim Jim Stash I watched my friend roast green chilies on her little bitty charcoal grill…grunt!…Seriously it took all afternoon because she cleaned the store out of green chilies…heh!heh!…The guy who helped her get them from a tall basket said they had more in the back…yeeep!…So she plans on going back and cleaning them out again..wuffle!…She roasts them and then freezes them. Right now there is only 2+2 freezer baggies full of chilies. She needs way more to make it thru the winter….yikes!
