On Sunday we do beginnings – the first paragraph or two or three of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker (and it gives us a chance to use “moniker”!). How about today we look at Dog On It, first in the Chet and Bernie series (which can be read in any order!).

I could smell him – or rather the booze on his breath, before he even opened the door – but my sense of smell is pretty good, probably better than yours. The key scratched against the lock, finally found the slot. The door opened and in, with a little stumble, came Bernie Little, founder and part-owner (his ex-wife Leda walked off with the rest) of the Little Detective Agency. I’d seen him look worse, but not often.

He mustered a weak smile. “Hey, Chet.”

I raised my tail and let it thump down on the rug, just so, sending a message.

“I’m a little late, sorry. Need to go out?”

Why would that be? Just because my back teeth were floating? But then I thought, what the hell, the poor guy, and I went over and pressed my head against the side of his leg. He scratched between my ears, really digging his fingers in, the way I like. Bliss. How about a little more, down the back of the neck? I hunched my shoulders a bit, giving him the idea. Ah, nice. Very nice.

I was introduced to Chet and Bernie on 8/17/2019, and am into their world!!! I am beginning #6 this morning, and could hardly wait to wake up and get started. A life long dog person, at nearly 83, I have met so many personalities, but my most recent rescue, an 8 yr old Aussie Cattle Dog/Beagle (yes, I know!!), has mastered some of Chet’s behaviors. (Wow! I even called him Chet yesterday.) I renamed him as Bodhi, have had him about 7 months, and am beginning to see some delightful aptitudes exhuding out his pores as he becomes more joyous. (After 7 years on a chain!!)
Keep on writing, Peter, and faster, ’cause what’ll I do when I’ve read everything you’ve written, and listened to all the audios? (The latter, which I do from my Gazelle.)

Best wishes on your literary journey! What a talent you have!!

Dog On It! My favorite sentence in that beginning is : “I raised my tail and let it thump down on the rug, just so, sending a message.”

Welcome, Trish! The regulars on this blog try to keep Spence(Peter) on course writing, writing, writing! After you finish the Chet and Bernie series, don’t forget to try the Birdie and Bowser and Queenie and Arthur books. Spence says you may need a fake ID to purchase a young adult book, but we all manage without the ID and enjoy the books. Congrats on your adopting a new pup who has had a tough life. Give him lots of love!

    Happy Sunday, friends!

Trish: Welcome! We belong to our Lady, SnowBella and the Giant. Our Lady and the Giant belong to each other. We usually post on this here blog as do our fellow members of the Nation Within that belong to our Lady and the Giant including Belle Starr, Ole Doc, Wee Nigel, Mama Luna, and Charlie. Once in a while, our Lady and the Giant make a cameo appearance, but usually it is us and our kind on the blog.

More to Trish: What you should know about us…We were referred to lovable miscreants by Melanie, an early contributor to the blog. She Crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2014. Since you can’t say anything online that isn’t true, we know for certain we are lovable miscreants. You should also know we have a couple of core values: 1) don’t get caught, and 2) if caught, blame Belle Starr. That about sums us up.
