Beginnings

Sunday is when this small business takes a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. Since Santa 365 came up yesterday – granted, not a novel but a short story, available in digital and audio – how about we go with that?

“There’s no Santa Claus,” Charlie said.

“Who told you that?” said Bernie.

“Esmé.”

“Who’s Esmé?”

“At school.”

“Well,” said Bernie, “everyone has their own opinion.”

“It’s not an opinion, Dad,” said Charlie. “It’s a scientific fact.”

“Oh?”

“From a scientist.”

“Any scientist in particular?”

“Groucho Marx.”

Ah, yes, that nobel prize winning scientist, Groucho Marx, phd. And kids will clamp on to those falsehoods and hang on for dear life, sometimes for the rest of their lives. That is how we still think Spinach has loads of iron, the most of any vegetable. But it doesn’t. To some people it just tastes like it does.

That balancing an egg on it’s tip at the equinox is another. Oh, and that was yesterday and we missed it. Today is it officially Fall/Autumn. Here it seems like it is but it’s not because it is going to be back in the 80s on Wednesday. I may pick an ear of corn on Tuesday and see if it’s ripe. The watermelon will wait another 4-6 weeks but I will be checking it every week, almost every day as I have a tendency to leave thing for too long and they are past their prime. I’m sure the heat will do the watermelon good. I’ve got one big one, two medium and a small that is catching up. I may be eating watermelon from Halloween to Thanksgiving.

It is national punctuation day. So let’s hear it for OFA who uses punctuation perfectly.

It’s also Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving which is a thing. The longest continual celebration of Thanksgiving in the U.S. predating the Lincoln one. Even the Pilgrim one as there were breaks of celebration in that one. Every September 24 since 1734. They don’t move theirs around. The original leader was Caspar Schwenkfeld, a contemporary of Martin Luther, only in the Netherlands. Now that, to me, is an inspiration for a Chet & Bernie name. Or Schwenkfelder. Like Cornelius or Oscar or Bruno Schwenkfelder. Maybe not a perp but maybe a victim. Or witness of interest.

Thanksgiving!…Hey! I really like the idea of a continuous Thanksgiving dinner!!..burp!snort!… Wouldn’t that be the best thing ever? I say we get started today. My friend says she is making pizza tonight so that’s the next best thing by golly!…yark!twirl!

    oops.

Caspar was born in Osiek, Poland (formerly Ossig, Silesia, Germany)1489-1561. The Schwenkfelders settled in Pennsylvania Dutch territory here in the U.S.

My bad. I wouldn’t want to be accused of “pulling an Esmé” and leading Charlie down the path of inaccuracy.

Oh, Riõ, you wouldn’t like Schwenkfelder Thanksgiving. As there were no crops to harvest, the Thanksgiving meal consisted of water, bread, butter, and apple butter. I have a feeling it still does. While bread and butter and apple butter sounds like an okay snack, as a Thanksgiving meal, it leaves a bit more desired.

I think I might grill some hamburgers today. I have buns and chips and some ice cream for after.

Heh! For a minute, I thought I was banished from the blog as none of my previous posts showed up.

Every time I read this beginning, it always makes me smile. :^)

RIO! What condiments will your friend be putting on the pizza?

    Good afternoon to all!
