On Sundays we do beginnings, taking a look at all the books written by Peter Abrahams including under the Spencer Quinn (strange word coming up warning) moniker. Here’s the beginning of the brand new Chet and Bernie short story UPPER STORY – free to all pre-orderers of HEART OF BARKNESS (pub date July 2, link below).

A window high up at the back of a warehouse in South Pedroia slid open and out climbed Chuckie Kindrachuk. Upper story dudes tend to be on the lean and nimble side, in my experience, but Chuckie was neither. He shifted his lumpy backpack, which seemed to prefer riding on Chuckie’s lumpy side instead of his lumpy back, and extended a hand for the nearest drainpipe. The moon shone on his moon-shaped face. Hey! Had Chuckie actually added a few pounds since the last time I’d seen him? He extended his hand a little more, the look in his eyes excited, hopeful, and a bit crazy, a look you often saw in perps at just such a moment. You had to like Chuckie, and I did. In fact, I liked most of the perps and gangbangers we’d sent up the river – not a river with water in it, our rivers being pretty much dry here in the Valley.

Chuckie sounds interesting…and has an interesting name.

    Good morning all.

    Morning all.
We wonder if “Chuckie” is a given name or a nickname, what with his last name.
Spence “monicker” again? 🤨 Time to be didactic. Practice both pseudonym and nom de plume until they roll off your fingers.
    Pleasant Sunday to everyone.

Well, the tomato plant photo finally escaped moderation purgatory and did appear on yesterday’s postings, although the photo (which is a double Dawson photo) is less than spectacular, so you should just take it on faith that our tomato plants are in and we even have some early tomatoes on them (although still very far from ripe or edible).

And that way, Spencer, you’ll be able to count just like Chet…one, two, four!

    Hello All–

Jake is handsome. Tomatoes are just fine any way you prepare them. Belle Starr is wonderful, and so are purple Siberian Iris.
I am grading, however, which is less wonderful.
I am eagerly looking forward to Heart of Barkness.
In addition to pseudonym and non de plume, one could also get all trendy and talk in terms of the Spencer Quinn brand…

Oh, Diane, leave it to you (and your exposure to millenniums) to come up with yet another word for OFA to try on.
Hope Miss Pretty and Edgar are okay, and you too.

Rio, The little flower thing is an Iris.
The round purple thing is an Allium. They are in the onion family. Around here purple Chives, also from the onion family, are just about to bloom. The chives are round and purple but much smaller than your Allium.
The Allium ‘Purple Sensation’ is popular right now

I pre-ordered Heart of Darkness and submitted the online form with proof of purchase to get the short story. Somewhere I got feedback that says I’ll be receiving an electronic copy of the book in the mail. This was confusing. Do I get a paper copy in the mail or an electronic copy via email?
