Beginnings
On Sundays we do beginnings – all the Peter Abrahams novels including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™ As you may know, the Chet and Bernie series can-be-read-in-anyorder™. One of the reasons for that is that Chet and Bernie are already together by the time of book 1, Dog On It. For how they got together, you have to read the first of the C&B e-short stories, A Cat Was Involved.
“Chet—let’s get a move on, buddy.”
Chet? That was me, and getting a move on was my kind of thing. Plus here at K-9 school they were big fans of coming after your name was called—pretty soon after, in fact, if you wanted a treat. Which I always did. But at this particular moment, I had just lifted my leg, and once started in on something like that, there’s really no stopping till it’s over, as you probably know. I’m not referring to the brief leg lift for marking purposes, over and done with in a flash. This was the other kind, much longer-lasting, and often a peaceful break in the day, where the mind can wander in a pleasant sort of—
“Chet!”
I finished up and trotted over to Officer Bobby Torres. Bobby gave me a funny look. I gave him a funny look back. His eyes, dark and watchful, narrowed a bit, and he wrote something on his clipboard. I yawned.

Good morning to all!
Always love the beginnings because sometimes I haven’t seen them in quite a while. A Cat Was Involved may be a short story but it’s one of our favorites of the C&B writings.
Happy first day of spring, and it’s about time! A lot of places have had a rough winter. Around here today it is chilly but still sunny.

I love A Cat Was Involved.
Chet is an outside the box thinking sort of dog. No way he would be happy in the restricted by the book environment of police dog. He needed an outside the box sort of partner and Bernie is perfect. Who else would be teaching Chet how to open all sorts of door handles? Who else would “listen” to what Chet is trying to tell him?
Police work is for the kibble and a biscuit every day sort of do. Chet is a BBQ and Slim Jim sort of dog. He would grow to be miserable with the limitations of conventional police dog work.

Watching the awards now. I want Dan to get an award for starting with 14 dogs and ending with 14 dogs.
Glad Travis got an award for among other things lending his sled to Chad so he could finish and in the process get most improved.
