Beginnings

Sunday is when we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. Since the Chet and Bernie novel A Fistful of Collars came up yesterday, how about we feature it today? It’s one of my few novels where Hollywood is a factor. The only others I can think of are Revolution #9 – where a character appears on Jeopardy – and Oblivion, where a TV movie is made of the case that made Nick Petrov, a PI and the main character, famous. Armand Assante was cast as Nick. (There’s fun to be had in the little corners of this business.) Here’s the beginning of A Fistful of Collars:

“Heard you drove another one off a cliff,” said Nixon Panero. He spat a thin brown stream of chewing tobacco into an empty paint can, or maybe not that empty. Yellow paint, the yellow of egg yolks, now with a brown swirl in the middle: there’s all kinds of beauty in life.

“You heard wrong,” said Bernie.

    Greetings!

    Great beginning!

Snow and then rain expected in this neck of the woods beginning this evening into tomorrow morning.

Hobbit: Hope you are tip-top soon. Grizz fractured his right wrist over the summer when he went to the dumpster to throw out garbage, and a racoon jumped out at him.

Ice cream cake will be involved today as Grizz is 65!

    Good day to all!

Good day to everyone and happy birthday kiddo! We here have Grizz by several years.
Hobbling Hobbit, good thing Sadie Bear is a bit slower.
Neuropathy can be a pain in the limbs!
Happy (not really) MLK Jr. days.

Nixon Panero. I love that character. (But not the chewing tobacco. Disgusting habit.)

    Happy Birthday, Grizz.

Rió will be happy to hear I have started the first book of the Any Carpenter series. Finished Andrew Cotter’s Dog Days and didn’t feel like another non-fiction. With no new books of C&B or the other two series decided to start the Carpenter ones. It was either that or Gary Paulsen’s Fishbone. Up to chapter six so far.

Also been working on granny squares. Picked a picky pattern and anticipate running out of steam soon. I’ll plod a bit every once in a while but I expect it will be a while before I have enough for even a lap robe.

Taking the dogs over to visit Dolly. Raw bones for all.

HOH: Grizz thanks you for the birthday wishes.

MLAIUPPA: Granny square shoulder bags are all the rage at the moment. Love the color choices.

Granny!….What wonderful happy colors your squares are!…snort!…Looks complicated though. My friend has started crocheting again today. It’s been several months since she has worked on a project…grunt!…But today she took up crochet hook and felt good about remembering how to do anything…wuffle!

Grizz!…Hope you have had a very Happy Birthday today!…snorkel!

Hobbit!…Would you like me to come live with youse and make sure you do nothing all day after day by lying on your lap while you read???…sniff!sniff!…My friend had a large book drop on her foot at the library. She had a broken toe and she told me how painful it was and there was really nothing she could do but let it heal….sniffle!

For my fellow Jack Reacher fans. On Feb 4th, a new series starts on Amazon Prime called REACHER. And instead of midget Tom Cruise playing the 6’5” main character, they have someone who looks the part. I actually signed up for Amazon Prime after I saw the show was coming (although honestly, I was thinking of signing up for it for a while). Can not wait!

Also saw a preview for a new movie coming to theaters in Feb called DOG. It looks really good. Has Channing Tatum as a troubled veteran taking a military dog (a Belgium Malinois also suffering with problems) across country to a funeral. Looks touching with a lot of humor.

Ugh! That beginning makes me shudder. OFA is way too good at describing phlegmy chew. One of the old guys in the long term care where I worked was addicted to chew and he was blind so didn’t always hit the bucket with his expectorations. Disgusting!

    Happy birthday Grizz!

HobblingHobbit: Pamper your feet. Hope they heal fast!

BooBear’s Mom: Thanks for the recommendations.

Mliauppa: Not your granny’s granny squares! Vibrant!
