Baseball’s Back! (Corrected For Spelling)

“The sounds!” says Admin. “The sights! The constant background hum of the game all summer!”

“Life is good,” says Spence. “Who are we picking?”

“Nats over the Blue Jays – you heard it here first. Two national capitals playing against each other.”

“Um, I’m not sure Toronto is the Canadian capital. More like Ottawa, I believe.”

“Ottawa? But they don’t have a team.”

“Afraid not.”

“In that case, I’m changing my pick – Nats over Rays. You heard it here first.”

“Noted. And here’s a picture of Audrey on her first springtime visit to the beach.”

    Good morning all.

We’re sure that baseball info means something to some of you. We here have no idea what he is talking about. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

Audrey seems to be having fun. Where is Pearl?

We enjoy the boys of summer ’cause it means Daddy Dawg puts the pontoon boat on the river, just for us (we think). Coould someone please move those fishing poles? We’ll keep the worms.
    Morning all!

As I woke up this morning to the charming roar of the SNOWPLOW, I thought about just pulling the covers over my head and not coming out for at least a week.

Hmm. They already have ranks in that sport?

Anyhoo, Audrey looks like she has the right idea.

    Good morning all.

    B.Stover, perfect explanation.

The radio now says about 5 inches of snow. I hope they are wrong.

Oh, and the Bears are out. Not any team, not our dogs, real Bears are waking up. They hit the bird feeder. It is now down for the season. It is fixable.

Stover, You left out chewing bubble gum. Baseball players chew a lot of bubblegum.

Spence is right…Life is Good! The Boys of Summer are back!
The Rockies may have lost yesterday, but they hit 3 home runs in the game.

Thanks to Admin and Rio (and SiberH too) for the endorsement of the Nats. I have to say it has been a long time since the Nation’s Capitol has been this excited about baseball. And what a start yesterday — two home runs in his first two at bats in his first opening day game by Bryce Harper and seven innings of shut out baseball (including retiring 19 in a row) by Stephen Strasburg. Life doesn’t get any better than that! Well, maybe it would just a little bit if Georgetown had not lost to FGCU in the opening round and instead had made the Final Four.

B.Stover: Admin needs a lesson on here and hear, har-de-har.

Ottawa is the capital of Canada. The Blue Jays made several acquisitions of really good players last Fall, hoping to up their place in the standings. Ho hum.

I would root for the Nationals in honor of Wookie but I have given up on professional sports after the Tigers disasterous showing in the World Series last year. Well, since all your teams have lost games so far, maybe my team won. I will take just a little peek at the standings. WhoooHooo! Go Tigers! We’re number one!

Letterman did a very funny monologue about (not liking) baseball. We have decided that the only thing we like about baseball is the movie “Damn Yankees”. Ok, it is old fashioned and chauvinistic, but the number “Whatever Lola Wants” still makes us laugh.

No snow down here in Sunny Valley, Melanie. tee hee

Audrey – we are jealous. We want to be running on the beach too!

    Good morning everyone.

Well, not everyone’s team lost, Dawson?

My guys and Admin’s team won.

Not doing any car rides today. I have declared a reat day today. What am I doing? Getting the top of my desk cleaned off so it can be cut down to go in the corner of a smaller room.

Who’d have guessed the would be all this stuff to go through, and it would be heavy.

Bee and T & G, and possible Melanie, I think we are outnumbered here – or hear- on the blog.
Dawson, you are very observant. We didn’t even notice the wrong use of hear up above.
Rose, Per your suggestion, just picked up House Rules at the library.
Does anyone read David Baldachi? He usually writes mystery/suspense type fiction, but Barb just read Wish You Well. Quite different for him. He writes from stories he heard from his Virginian relatives. It takes place in the mountains of Virginia in the early 1940s. We give it a thumbs up.

  22. B. Stover
    10:48 am on April 2nd, 2013

Dawson: I noticed the two “hears” but ignored them. (Isn’t it interesting that “hear” is in “heard”–using just the “d” rather than “ed.” I may have to do some research on that.)

Rio: I sent a NYTimes article to you via email regarding the use of sabermetrics (the use of statistics) in baseball announcing.

T&G. I love Damn Yankees also. Although I would also recommend the book it was based on, The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop. And speaking of fun baseball books, there was a terrific book published in the 1960s (may be out of print now) called A Pennant for the Kremlin by Paul Malloy, about a baseball team that winds up being owned by the Russians (although not too farfetched these days given the Brooklyn Nets in the NBA).

We always thought it was just about a baseball player, but NPR did a piece on it recently, and it is actually about a young woman who shot a Phillies player in the 1940s. Or at least that is what the NPR piece sounded like. That woman just died this past December.

I just came in from the monthly shopping to trip over the HOH, even Pookey with her shoulder to toe cast! When all was put away, I noticed about 12 lbs. of “feral, invisible, long-haired chihuahuas” rolling on the floor (surprise). Will tackle them Man~ana. Today I will sulk that I missed the “Damned Yankees” discussion. I was excited to mount a revival of it…hounds in uniform, dancing…..

We want to see the Jackie Robinson movie as well, but not because of the baseball aspect, more the social aspects.

We have had a day of giving lots of money away. We donated to the new tire store, to the fix-it-up garage, to the groceries-are-discounted-here-so-buy-lots-more store, and to the v-e-t.

Mama says we are all on a restricted treatie budget for the rest of the month. Wait a minute – it’s only the SECOND DAY!

Anyway, Callie had to go to the v-e-t for surgery today. She had another tumor, right on her under-the-tail-whatsis. The v-e-t said that he was pretty sure it would be benign, since the last one was, and this one came off very easily.
But Callie is in the audience for the dancing giraffe show. We are betting real money that Gramp sleeps on the floor with her tonight.

Gramp tells you that he appreciates your thoughts and support. He says Callie is playing the role of “Camille” to the hilt. She is sprawled in the middle of the kitchen, and gives a little tail-tip wiggle when anyone speaks to her. But she is not about to move, and is making everyone step over and around her – quite a challenge in our little kitchen.

HOH and T&G, we didn’t call those little bundles of fur sharks for no reason. I remember once when The Raven went out to do Poop Patrol in his PJs. We had a litter of 8 ten week old pups and they decided to pull on his pants. Luckily, the stockade is NOT where the neighbors can see because he lost his pants!

Good news for Grace. She started limping on Saturday, but instead of all the bad things it could be, she has only twisted her wrist or ankle. Not sure which because I was crying in relief that it wasn’t anything else.
