Back From The Edgars
“So,” says Spence. “How did the acceptance speech go?”
“No one threw anything. I told the email story.”
“You didn’t.”
“Yeah, I did. Sort of.”
“Sort of?” says Spence. “Meaning you’ve told it better?”
“Kind of.”
“Did anyone laugh?”
“Possibly. I wasn’t absorbing things too well.”
“God almighty,” say Spence, taking the bourbon off the shelf and pouring for the two of them and Bernie. But not me: water’s my drink. I lap up some from my bowl and head for the window by the front door. Hey! Who’s that coming up the walk, dressed all in black?
Many, many thanks everybody for all the kind words and support. And is there a picture of Hawaiian pants in there? Spectacular!

I'm laughing. Now there's an email story that I don't know about. And someone dressed in black….The plot keeps getting thicker. (Reality Check is excellent. I'm half way through.)
3:28 am on May 1st, 2010
"I wasn't absorbing things too well."
That's okay PA! At some point it will all sink in. Then Audrey can lick up your tears of joy! Or just clean your face.
Someone in black coming up the walk? Oooooo. . And PA, Spencer and Bernie have opened the bourbon. Should be interesting.
3:56 am on May 1st, 2010
Yippee,
It's so great to be home – meaning I'm glad you're all back. And with prize in hand.

PA – How Sweet It Is. Peer recognition of your talent and consistent work. Congratulations, and thanks for the daily blog good will.
4:22 am on May 1st, 2010
Congratulations from your cat fan club too. And who is this
coming up the walk in black? You are up to your teasing ways again P.A.
Our guess is her name is Audrey!

B – My Mom is so jealous of you! She had no time yesterday to read Reality Check and here you are halfway through. Bummer here!
4:53 am on May 1st, 2010
Sam: I think that you guys deserve a day of reading and relaxing.
Abbie and Alice: Love the picture.
5:09 am on May 1st, 2010
Hey, perhaps the person coming up the walk dressed in black is Astrid. Now, why do I like that idea?
5:19 am on May 1st, 2010
Whoa!
Astrid is going to meet Peter, Spencer AND Bernie?
Alice Johnson
5:26 am on May 1st, 2010
Astrid would be coming to see Bernie, the detective, friend of Col. Bob who is the father of Ray. And Bernie just got back from his "discussion" with Albie Rose and Foster and he has learned something……Now what would Astrid want?
This is my problem with serialization. Okay, I'll stop speculating. At least, I'll stop posting speculations.

Black!… Why it’s Adelina Borghese!… snort!… from THAT…. heh!…. back from the dead!… wheeze!
5:28 am on May 1st, 2010
AbbieTheKat!… I love that photo!… snort!… Especially since you are in the foreground and Alice is in the background!… snicker!
5:54 am on May 1st, 2010
AbbieTheKat and Alice, you are wonderful models.
Someone once asked me how I take such great pictures of The Pack. I just tell them that I delete the bad pictures.
Though a few years ago, I did a log on how to take pictures of your Newf. Snicker. It was all bad pictures. Wish I knew where that was; it's somewhere in the ether.
Zoë and I are turning green waiting for Reality Check.
Hmm. Brain skip here, you think if we typed using white it would disappear on the black background?
6:07 am on May 1st, 2010
Thursday was fun, wasn't it? Happy day for our Pack!!
I'm going to go out on a limb here, but I am fairly certain that Astrid has walked across the rainbow bridge. I have a feeling that Ray Jason and Bernie are about to meet.
Mr. Wolfe Dogge
Melanie, can you run that past Dan? I think it gives me a certain dignity.

On a serious note, I would like to have a moment of silence for all our brothers and sisters who are suffering the woes of a nasty oil spill.
Makes me want to trot to the gulf coast with a bottle of Dawn in my mouth and start bathing some poor birdies.
Sigh.

Amazing!…. How in the world did Staff get two Kats to pose on different seats… snort!… each turned towards the opposite direction….grunt!…and both are looking at the camera with their eyes open!… wheeze!… She must have used super glue!
6:35 am on May 1st, 2010
Wolfee!.. Just thinking about that oil spill makes my stomach roll…gurgle!… All the sea life and the fishermen are going to pay dearly for this BP mess… sob!
6:42 am on May 1st, 2010
AbbieTheKat!… My friend wants to know if your Staff could come and take some photo’s of me?… snort!….She said she would buy the glue….grunt!
6:42 am on May 1st, 2010
Congrats, PA!! Next year, a matching one for Spence for Chet & Bernie! Mom was being worked to death this week and wasn't able to post her good thoughts and our crossed paws, but they were there. Way to go!!
Abbie and Alice, fantastic pic! We think you two must be natural models, because Mom's pics of us never turn out that well.
Chet, stay alert…we need to know more about the CB case and who is that walking up the drive??
6:48 am on May 1st, 2010
We agree, the serious situation in the gulf is going to affect so many animals! Living on the gulf coast in Texas, we've been watching carefully. We're sure that all rescue agencies will be working triple time trying to help with the wildlife. So far, the tides seem to be keeping the spill our of the Texas waters but who knows what will happen.
Wolfie, we like your original "nom de plume"…it fits your personality much better since you are not the stuffy type.
6:52 am on May 1st, 2010
Adelina Borghese!… was dressed all in black… snort!… when she walked up the walk….grunt!… to see Bernie about guarding Princess.

Hey Wiggles,
That block was called the spider web at the time I made it. It was in a class about 8 years ago. All I remember is you used 4 different strips, 1-1/2 inches wide, (2 lights and 2 darks) and sewed them together lengthwise and then cut them out in pie shapes. 8 pie cuts to a square. I don't know how to describe the way you arrange them. You turn half of them upside down.
Here is a look at the whole quilt. About 50" square.

~Wiggles,
(whispering)
You might notice that some of the blocks are not all using the same strips. I had a little problem with cutting and had to get really 'creative'.
So don't tell anyone.
OK?
7:04 am on May 1st, 2010
Riö,
Darling!
The temptation to glue you down is almost irrisistible. I doubt it would slow you down for long though.
If I am ever in Colorado we can set a date. Can I use super glue? Maybe wood glue and a clamp or two? Epoxy cement?
Heh heh heh

I wonder if it's too soon to start planning our trip to the Edgars next year? I'm sure Bernie and Chet will win, and we need to make sure that the Hyatt can accomodate all of us dogs and kats. Melanie, it's going to take some time to outfit all the newfies in black tie and ball gowns. I can just imagine Rio in a tux and a top hat! By that time, Sam's hair will be perfect and she can sparkle just like the princess!
7:10 am on May 1st, 2010
Alice!… You were not invited, just your Staff… snort!… Gluing me down would involve a lot of heavy lifting and I don’t think you are up to it!… wheeze!
7:12 am on May 1st, 2010

Nice to see you again. Staff says to tell you the secret is to walk around with the camera always at the ready.

Wolfie Wigglebutt: I like your name. I think it perfectly describes the happy dog that you are.
By the way, there is a word "kat" in English. It's an evergreen from Arabia and its leaves have narcotic qualities. It's used in tea (Oxford English Dictionary).
When I hear someone described as "dressed all in black," I don't think of a man but a woman. Adelina was dressed all in black, but it can't be her, right? Parallel universe? I think it would be very interesting if it were Astrid.
7:42 am on May 1st, 2010
Stover!… I was just answering Chet that way incase he was sneaking in a quiz question!… heh!
7:49 am on May 1st, 2010
But we want a quiz, or contest.
8:09 am on May 1st, 2010
The Human Pack here has decided that Mr. Wolfe Dogg would be perfect for those missions when you are not being used as a distraction, but as an agent along side 00Wookie.
The Newf Pack think that Wiggles is great and so is everything else you've used.
The quilt is beautiful, Staff. Alice and Abbie? You mark new furniture differently than Mac does. When we move a chair or get new furniture, the call is "Don't you DARE pee on that MAC!"
This is why we have our new furniture come from the Goodwill.
8:12 am on May 1st, 2010
Oh, with the oil spill? The lawsuits have started. Not only against BP (those folks who gave us the refinery explosion) but against Halliburton. Seems that their concrete footings might not be up to spec.
Jeez. Wind turbines off the coast of Cape Cod are being blasted because they might bother the birds, seems this might be a tad more nasty?
8:12 am on May 1st, 2010
Nice furniture, Kats! It looks as if you are doing a fine job of breaking it in! We had comfy couches in the family room but Baxter, the dog next door, ate it and now we have some other couches that I don't like. You are lucky!
I would love to see that photo shoot. My guess is that it would take more hands than Staff has to get a good photo of Rio!
BeeStover, you are so smart! We'll keep this info about Kat just between the Pack. If my boys hear about it, well…..
About Astrid…..I just keep coming back to the feeling that Astrid is dead. If someone is dressed in black, it usually signifies mourning. And who would be most likely to mourn Astrid? Not Albie, not if he killed her. Not her family from Tennessee, because I get the sense that she had cut off her ties. Not CB, because he was no longer a part of her life. That leaves her son. These aren't fact, just suppositions.
8:15 am on May 1st, 2010
Or…..maybe I could change my name to Nero??
Let's see if anyone can figure out why.

Mom is in a bad mood today. She has to go to a stupid baby shower when what she really wants to do is stay home, garden, and read the Echo Falls books.
Plus she has to take Teddy to the groomer and she always gets carsick on the windy road.

Oh, I love 00Wookie! Wookie and Wolfie, what a team!! He has a better wardrobe than me though.
8:25 am on May 1st, 2010
Bee…..YES!!!
You are a brain!!! Since you are a human, not a DOG, maybe you would like to gift a certain little wigglebut with your prize chicken jerky treats? Just a suggestion…..
8:27 am on May 1st, 2010
Okay, so I'm going to keep my name. Nero just doesn't quite suit me.
I'm going to take a nap in the sunshine while mom goes to her stupid baby shower.
Later, dudes.

Oh, well.

Riö, be careful if Alice comes near you with the super glue. I once super glued my fingers to a sword for one of the sons' Halloween outfit.
He was perturbed. Luckily, one of our neighbors had fingernail polish remover. I'm not the sort of woman who has fingernail polish nor remover.

Horses!… The Kentucky Derby is on right now!… snort!… I can't believe people really pay that much money for those things!…wheeze!

A belated CONGRATS to Chet, Bernie, and Spence for any help given to that talented PA. So happy for your Edgar win. Just ordered Reality Check, so we are way behind B. Stover. Still hoping for more Ingrid in the future. We just finished reading THAT for the second time. Counting the days till Sept 28th. And did someone up there mention Cheney and Haliburton – Yikes, I think it ruined Mom's day!

Nero Wolfe, one of my favorites too, BStover.
Kentucky Derby? Better go watch. Probably over.

Horse racing isn't much better than dog racing in my opinion. Yes, it is exciting, but they are raced as 2 year olds (most born Jan and Feb.) Horses don't fully mature till they are around 4, so all that running is stressful on their legs. That's why so many of them fall apart, or even have to be put down. Not nice, anytime animals are thought of as a business venture. In a true sport, everyone is there voluntarily. Anyone out there have an opinion?
1:32 pm on May 1st, 2010
The coverage started at 4 pm to go to 7 pm. For a 2 minute race.
Not as bad as the Super Bowl coverage (sorry that's probably sacrelage).
As with dogs where working or tracking or herding is in the genes, running is in horses' genes. Watching foals run in the field just for the fun of it is magical.
I remember wondering about the training that the Lipizzaner horses go through, but again those jumps and working on their hindquarters is something that the foals do.
Like any athlete these horses need care.
Whoops got to go, they're about to start.
1:36 pm on May 1st, 2010
Cool. I wanted the filly to win. But that was cool.
They are as muddy as the Newfs are when the swim in a mud puddle.
1:45 pm on May 1st, 2010
Both Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds get a great deal of care. If anyone is ever in Lexington, Ky. stop by some of the stables. These horses are bred to trot, pace and run. After racing, many become stallions or broodmares. After retirement they go to turn out farms. If the life of these trained horses is compared to wild horses, I am sure one would find that the wild horses do not live as long nor do they have conditions as good as the trained horses.
1:53 pm on May 1st, 2010
My Mom prays while the race is on. She doesn't want any horses to get hurt.
2:04 pm on May 1st, 2010
I believe the Lipizzaner stallions are not worked hard until they are older, and more solid in bone structure. Not quite the same as the bone pounding on the race tracks that the Thoroughbreds get. Standardbreds (harness racing) have a much longer racing career. Yes, they are extremely well cared for, but they are also pushed more than the way horses run on their own in a pasture. We had horses for years, and believe me a herd never runs that fast or that hard. Glad none of them went down on that muddy track.

Stover!… Breakin Bad! I am on episode 5 of season one!…heh!… I am so addicted…grunt!… I hope you can get past some of the darker aspects in the first episodes… wheeze!

Hi everyone. Greetings from Woodstock, VT. Me, my mom and dad are on vacation for a full week up here. Just glorious. Congrats aga-n to PA, I'm still singing. And to Abbie and Alice, great quilt from one who knows. PA, if you are speaking this week, let us know and we will be there. Gotta go, using my dad's Blackberry with the tiny keybord. Hopefully he will have his laptop up and running soon. Your pal, 00Wookie

Rio: Sorry but I still haven't watched Breaking Bad. I'll let you know when I do….hopefully tomorrow.
2:44 pm on May 1st, 2010
Hi Wookie,
That reminds me, you and Rio are working on some kind of assignment with a decoder device, don't remember exactly, but it seems as if there was some sort of glitz. (?) It's a little foggy but I was wondering if we could get an update. I find it a little serendipedous that 00Wookie is in Vermont, of all places.

Mom saw BB but didn't like it because it was about Drugs. Mom does not like bad drugs. I don't either. The kind the doctor gives me taste icky, except for when they are hidden in cheese.

How's that?
2:56 pm on May 1st, 2010
Wolfie!… If she had watched further, she would have seen what terrible things can happen to drug dealer and addicts… snort!… but in a very creative and often darkly funny way…wheeze!… They are not glamorizing this conduct at all on this show!… grunt!.. Believe you me! … I would not be watching it if that were the case…heh!.
4:24 pm on May 1st, 2010
We'll give it another try. Personally, both of us would like for bad things to happen to drug dealers so that they would take up another line of "work'. No drug dealers = no drugs = no addicts = a safer and better world for us of us.
My boys were exposed to drugs even before they were born. All of us, even me, Wolfie, have fought very hard to save my boys. We are hopeful, but drugs are nasty things.
So that is why we hate drugs. It would be fun to see some drug dealers get their just dues. Especially those who give bad drugs to 14 year old boys. Grrrrr
4:31 pm on May 1st, 2010
OK, one more comment about horse racing, then I'm done. Yes, Thoroughbreds were bred to run a mile+ fast and Quarter Horses were bred to be fast in the 1/4 mile. But that doesn't mean they want to haul ass around a track at top speed. That's what we want. After 20 years of owning horses, believe me, all they really want to do is graze in a nice pasture with other horses and kick up their heels occasionally. I am not opposed to working a horse responsibly, any more than working with a dog responsibly. Dogs were bred to do certain jobs, and are happy when they do it. We have 2 herding dogs here, and they are happiest when they have a job to do. I am opposed to taking a young, un-developed animal, and forcing it to do activities that will break it down way before its time. It's sort of like training a teenager for adult atheletic competion. That's all I have to say. Good night all!
4:37 pm on May 1st, 2010
Oh yeah!…Regarding BB.. the stress and duress these guys go through…snort!.. Plus the total humiliation and disintegration of their families… grunt!… Its strange because one actually does come to hope they clean up their act… grunt!… but it just doesn’t seem to happen…snort!…. Like I said, I find the writing to be very creative….wheeze!… I do not support illegal drug use in any way…grunt!… That is why I love the fact that one of the major character’s has a brother-in-law that is a DEA agent!…cough!… This makes the story very interesting indeed!

MagPie!… I agree! Because we sat here one day and watched one of those young horses killed at the Kentucky Derby because its leg was broken!… snort! ..
