Autumn: From To Fetch A Thief
Bernie knocked on the door, a heavy wooden door, the kind you see on the old ranches in the Valley. I heard footsteps approaching, a click-click of high heels. Houses of ill-repute come up from time to time in our job – I’ve liked every one.
The door opened. A young woman in a short black dress looked out. “Sorry,” she said, “we’re closed.” Behind her the coffee shop was dark except for the white glow of a cooler and tiny green machinery lights here and there.
“Too late for coffee anyway,” Bernie said. “I’d never sleep.” Don’t ask me what that was about; the young lady didn’t appear to get it either. But then Bernie took out our card and we were back on track. “Mind showing this to Livia?” he said. She nodded and closed the door. We waited. A patrol car went down the street, didn’t slow down.
“What does that tell you?” Bernie said.
I didn’t know.
More clickety-clicks from inside. The door opened and the young woman looked out again, this time with a friendly smile. “Mr. Little? Please come in.”
Which we did.
“I’m Autumn,” the young woman said, closing the door.
“That’s a nice name,” Bernie said.
“I found it online,” Autumn said.
“Oh,” said Bernie.
She looked at me. “Is this Chet? Livia asked me if he was with you.”
“Yup,” Bernie said.
“Can I pat him?”
“He hates that.”
“You’re joking right?”
Of course he was. Bernie’s quite the joker at times, not always the right ones. But in this case everything worked out fine. Autumn turned out to be an excellent patter. The young ladies in houses of ill-repute were always excellent patters, although why I wasn’t sure. What the whole business was about, meaning what was actually for sale – for example, Max’s Memphis Ribs sold ribs – remained a mystery to me.
Answer for Kirby T: Yes, Jim Frangione has recorded To Fetch A Thief. Should be available.

Macy, Macy, Missy Min-Pin,
Sorry to see such a snit you're in.
Those Damn Yankees are going to win!
3:51 am on September 29th, 2010
Good morning, everyone. Beautiful day here and we have our book in hand. Trying to savor, but Barb is never going to be able to do what Wookie's dad did. He read a chapter a night for a whole month. We just finished chapter 3. It is so good!!!
Enjoyed Chet's description of Popo and the cotton candy, among others.
Loved the mention of us regulars in the acknowledgements.
4:26 am on September 29th, 2010
Good morning Chet, Mollypop, B&M and everyone. It's beautiful here today also. I'm on chapter nine and love it. Are the "spoiler alert" signals working for everyone? I'll stop posting specific examples if it bothers any Plunderers.
Good luck tonight Spence.
4:34 am on September 29th, 2010
A book in the hand is worth 2 in the mail. Or I'm sure it would be if I had one in hand. Today I will read Chapter One to the inmates, printed from the blog. Hopefully by the time I get off work there will be a book in the post office. Life is good.
Autumn: The leaves have changed color.
4:35 am on September 29th, 2010
GM ALL! It's a beautiful day here also. Though the last two days and tomorrow we have been getting all the summer rain we were SUPPOSED to have.
CHET! Got an idea. Seeing that Spence is going to be flying everywhere in just a few days . . . Signed copies of all your books should go in the carry-on. THEN trade them for upgrading! Just make sure that the pilot and co-pilot don't start reading until after the plane lands or you might end up in California or Hawaii.
4:38 am on September 29th, 2010
Hey Dawson, our leaves are in full color also. The maples (lots of sugar maples here) didn't do their bright brilliant change because of the drought, but the muted reds and purples are gorgeous.
4:59 am on September 29th, 2010
Colors are just starting here. Usually first part of October is the best. May go to Lake Geneva and take a boat ride around the lake before son-in-law puts boat away for the winter. Fal views there are gorgeous.
Told daughter about Dan's book and she is excited to see it. Is he making good progress at rehab?
Bee, you aren't giving any plot clues with your references, so I think you are fine with your comments.
5:11 am on September 29th, 2010
Dan is doing well. Tentative date of release: 10/05! That happens to be Zoë's birthday! Though she says she's not having a birthday this year. She is having an Un-birthday. So an un-birthday dessert is in the freezer, and un-birthday presents are coming. . .
Remember those little tiny puppies?
Here's Murphy!

Mom is really bummed out – she is waiting to get pictures of the fall leaves and we have no sunshine. None is scheduled for days. Clouds are rolling in off Lake Erie and then Tropical Storm 16 will hit us for the next 2 days.
Melanie – We don't have bright colors either, but they could look better than they do under this gray sky.
5:13 am on September 29th, 2010
Murphy still has his puppy look – but what a size he is!
5:20 am on September 29th, 2010
My, how they have grown! About how much does he weigh now?
6:04 am on September 29th, 2010
Another beautiful day today if you like record high temperatures, but I am not complaining after reading Wolfie's post of 102 degress yesterday. The leaves are not turning here yet, but they are in Santa Fe, 50 miles away. The Aspens are turning gold in the mountains. The Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Festival begins this Sat.
I'm enjoying the poetry of some of the plunderes. You guys are cracking me up.
Murphy…Awww CUTE! They may have to get a bigger car.
Good for Dan…staying in rehab till he has completed it.
6:08 am on September 29th, 2010
I think the group of them weight between 28 and 35 pounds. Murphy is around 30 pounds.
MollyPop: At least we are having one day of sunshine between all the rain. I was just being an earthworm. We've go one patch of ground that over the summer became like cement – no grass, no dust, just hard packed earth.
After the last two days of rain, I was able to get a pitchfork into it up to around an inch and a half. So I made holes. Hopefully, this next batch of rain gets deeper into the soil and Jesse (our go-to guy) can then put some compost on it and mix it in. Then it's planting grass. That way Grace can go out and dig holes in it, looking for moles.
6:22 am on September 29th, 2010
We are in Chapter 22 of TFAT. Chet is my hero!
I hope the book comes today for those of you still waiting on it.

Here in the semi-arid climate of south-central MT we are having warmer than usual temps (in the '90s the last two days) and the leaves from the Horse Chestnut tree are turning red and falling. For some reason there are hardly any chestnuts, which makes the Librarian happy because she doesn't have to clean them up.
6:38 am on September 29th, 2010
Melanie: Cute picture of Murphy. Glad to hear Dan is doing well. Oh good, Spence will be signing my book on Saturday. I can hardly wait to get it. I don't mind the comments and spoilers at all. It was 110 degrees yesterday. Too hot for me.
7:29 am on September 29th, 2010
Rio must be conniping all over the place. Last night he said his friend had to get up early to go to the busy place. It looks like she forgot to put the computer on for him while she's gone.
7:49 am on September 29th, 2010
Sam: Did you get the message about Dan wanting to thank everyone for the prayers and good thoughts by sending an autograph copy of his book? Press my name for an email address and write if you do.
7:53 am on September 29th, 2010
Sam: The Cahors (Chateau Haut-Monplaisir 2007; it won the Medaille D'Or in Paris 2009, according to the label) is deep, dark and smooth. It's one of the best wines I've ever had.
SH: I love hot air balloons…watching not riding in. I'll bet there will be many at the Albuquerque festival right?
I'm only on chapter eleven. SPOILER ALERT page 85. Another LOL moment with the iron and the firemen. Part of the humor is that Chet takes metaphors literally and also the connections that his memories make: When the iron comes out look out "although the firemen turned out to be great guys, with a big bag of treats in their truck."
7:58 am on September 29th, 2010
Crap!… What a rotten morning… grunt!…First I get woken up really early – no breakfast – driven over to her mother’s house and then from there somehow I end up at the Vets office….grumble!….Then someone clips all my claws which were growing out very nicely thank you very much, from the last time this atrocity happened to me….growl! … Now I am home again because her mother can only stand me for a short while for some reason…. snort! …There better be a chewy strip hidden around here some place…growl!
8:07 am on September 29th, 2010
Melanie, I'm already on your list along with Mollypop. But thanks again. I always love attention.
8:10 am on September 29th, 2010
SPOILER ALERT! ******** Stover, have you gotten to any of the times Bernie gets out of the car “quietly”? *********
8:14 am on September 29th, 2010
Sam: Duh (hitting my forehead)
8:16 am on September 29th, 2010
B., Dad can't find the receipt for the Cahors that he's been saving all this time. He's sure Mom threw it out. He says he will have a review later because he bought the two bottles locally. One of them he loved so he will go get it again and write down the name of the one that was so-so. Naturally, it was the more expensive one that he loved.
8:23 am on September 29th, 2010
Melanie, I know where the confusion came in. The address that Aunt Mollysmom gave you for the book was my address. She lives in Ellicottville most of the time but doesn't get mail there. It all comes here to Williamsville, which is in Amherst, and is a northern suburb of Buffalo.
I know, it's clear as mud.
8:39 am on September 29th, 2010
It's a shame when real life gets in the way of reading!!
8:52 am on September 29th, 2010
G&BB: I feel that way all the time!
Rio: SPOILER ALERT from chapter nine. Yes…page 86 is great: First Bernie has to let his eyes adjust. "Letting Bernie's eyes adjust meant just sitting there." Chet leaps silently out of the car and Bernie steps on a twig "that cracked like a gunshot in the night. At times like that we always froze, so we froze." Wonderful!!

Trivia!….Here’s something we didn’t know about the Charming Mr. Abrahams…snort!…He is a member of the Board of Directors at the Historic Highfield Hall in Falmouth…sneeze!…They say they have the funnest board meetings on Cape Cod because of his great sense of humor… chorkel!

9:09 am on September 29th, 2010
Dear Rio, I am sorry for your horrible terrible no good day.
And I am sorry for the broken tag above.
Abbie
9:09 am on September 29th, 2010
Abbie! You are so right!
9:34 am on September 29th, 2010
I bet the charming Mr. Abrahams does have a great sense of humor in person because of all the humor that is in his books…even the dark ones. I'm just guessing that humor can difficult to write. Actors have always said doing comedy can be their most challenging work. Anyone that can cause my mom to start laughing every time she come across the line "breaking rocks in the hot sun" is a very good writer. There are a lot of laughs in TFAT, but there is also a dark thread running through it. It is a very interesting book.
9:37 am on September 29th, 2010
SiberH and Wookie!….Did you guys hear the Fat Lady sign last night at the game???…snuffle.
9:48 am on September 29th, 2010
Stover, Yes, there will be around 500 or more hot air balloons here. On some mornings they will all lift off at once. People come from all over the world to fly in it or to watch it.
The traffic and crowds in this city during that week are unbelievable. Some of the balloons have already arrived and are flying around. We always have hot air balloons in the air here in the mornings, but now there are already more than normal. The balloons scare some dogs and horses. Not me, once I saw my first hot air balloon and figured out it wasn't a weird form a wildlife, I lost interest.
9:50 am on September 29th, 2010
I guess I didn't, Rio. Remember, I left the game in a huff because all they were talking about was hockey. The Rockies game will be starting in about 20 minutes.
9:55 am on September 29th, 2010
Rio — Unfortunately she sang loud and clear. Oh well, there is always next year. I will keep my cap as a very honored and treasured possession, however.
Also, since I know you could use a good laugh about now, I need to tell you about the most hilarious product ever made. We get a catalogue by a company called Solutions, with all sorts of unusual products. The one that caught my attention was something called "Subtle Butt"(which they even had the audacity to label as a great stocking stuffer), which is a disposable gas neutralizer. It is actually a soft fabric odor neutralizer pad that you can put in your undergarments to, you know, absorb any odors that might be released. I swear I am not making this up, it is just too funny for words. What have we come to. Wookie
10:01 am on September 29th, 2010
500 hot air balloons in the sky!! What fun. I think that writing humor would be similar to acting in a comedy: It all depends on the timing.
I'm at chapter fifteen and will stop reading for a while.
SPOILER ALERT–speaking of humor–Chet makes the mistake of getting on a trampoline once (105). (I laugh just picturing it.) And I want to remember this line so I can use it when appropriate: "I thought about thinking about that" (124).
10:04 am on September 29th, 2010
Wookie!….Heh! snort! Heh!….oh my Subtle Butt – Have your dad buy it and see if it works….snort! …Nice gift for those you don’t really like all that much… grunt!
10:15 am on September 29th, 2010
TFAT tracking, like tracking for Santa on 12-24 – it's at the local post office. Maybe, maybe it'll be here tomorrow.
A friend just bought a case of Cahors. How small is our world? And how weird, Wookie? Suppose Subtle Butt is patented?
10:16 am on September 29th, 2010
Mom and I went on a photo shoot. I told her it was a waste of time because of no sun. This would be a very nice picture if there had been some sunshine.

Wow, a whole case of Cahors.
Highfield Hall is where Spence is having a talk and book signing tonight.

Dog On It! I mean doggonit! Breaking rocks in the hot sun, cant's get that out of my head. Who started it with that song? Siber-H!
Just finished chapter 5. Trying to control myself, but…….
10:25 am on September 29th, 2010
Mollypop, It is still a nice picture. Where was it taken?
10:30 am on September 29th, 2010
I did, Maggie, I started it, sorry. Mom has been going around singing it, so I'm sorrier than you know.
Beautiful picture, Molly, even without sun.
10:34 am on September 29th, 2010
It is a beautiful picture Mollypop. We have sunny skies here today so maybe you'll have that tomorrow.
10:38 am on September 29th, 2010
Bee- the Cahors person has lots o'money and a friend in the biz.
All the spoiler alerts are working well. Thanks.
11:04 am on September 29th, 2010
The picture is taken here in Ellicottville at the Holiday Valley ski resort where we live.
B. – I wish we were going to get your weather this time, but we have Tropical Storm #16 coming up the East Coast. I think it's at Kirby's house right now.
Then we will have rain for the rest of the week. Mom wanted to at least get some pictures, in case the leaves might have all fallen by the time the sun comes back.
11:24 am on September 29th, 2010
Love the picture!
11:25 am on September 29th, 2010
Ellicottville looks like it is very scenic and beautiful. What a great place to live. Since there is a ski resort, are there nice shops and restaurants around the town?
11:36 am on September 29th, 2010
MagPie! You could bring Barb and shop until you drop. Ellicottville is a dog town and dogs are allowed in all the stores! Everyone who is local carries dog treats with them. We also have a spokesdog who collects money for dog charities.
11:42 am on September 29th, 2010
If fact, for Melanie, we met a 15-week old Newf puppy last week. What a sweetheart. Village children were hanging all over this dog and he didn't seem to even notice.
12:12 pm on September 29th, 2010
Mollypop, I could be just like Chet and get to go to outside cafes and scarf up all the delictable tidbits that humans drop. And people walking around with treats. Does it get any better than that?
12:14 pm on September 29th, 2010
Sniff!….I want to live in Ellicottville – but not for the shopping….snort!
12:30 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio, Barb is not a big shopper either. She does like to go out to eat occasionally. We are near Galena, which is a big tourist/resort town right on the Mississippi River. It has great shops and some good places to eat, but she only goes once a year.
12:43 pm on September 29th, 2010
And Siber-H is coming to Ellicottville this winter to pull sleds along with the other Huskys.
1:02 pm on September 29th, 2010
Hey!…Is that really good Hot Wing place in Ellicottville?…snort!snort!
1:18 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio – It's in Buffalo, where Sam is, and where I go once a week to visit them. Only fifty miles away, so you come too. We'll have a real party!
President Obama was here a couple of months ago and he stopped for chicken wings before he left.
1:22 pm on September 29th, 2010
YESSSS!!!!! Molly! It sounds like a really neat place, with SNOW, I might add. Mom hates to shop, but she could entertain herself by visiting with all the dogs.
Rio, I watched the Rockies game this afternoon. There was no hockey talk, but I will say no more in case you watch a replay of it.
1:33 pm on September 29th, 2010
Siber-H – Your Mom would love all the dogs. They pull up in special trucks with a window for each dog. My Mom helps them get to the right place and get parked. All the dogs want is to get going. They are soooo happy.
1:52 pm on September 29th, 2010
OK, We all meet this winter in Ellicottville for a bloggers reunion. No shopping!
2:03 pm on September 29th, 2010
Hey, Barb is shutting the computer down. Going out to dinner with friends. This really good place has Mon-Thurs specials for $9.90. Last time she brought back a huge piece of steak that was enough for another meal, plus plenty of snacks for me. Hope she isn't too late so we can come back on. Have a good night!
2:13 pm on September 29th, 2010
I want to ride in one of those dog trucks. We could bundle Rio up in fake fur and he could ride along.
3:06 pm on September 29th, 2010
SiberH!…What the Hell! All I am going there for is the food dude!…grunt!…No sleigh rides for me especially in fake fur!….snort!….Talk to Alice about that gig. She’s probably sporting fake fur as we speak!…sneeze!
3:07 pm on September 29th, 2010
Stover!…Have you seen the latest Rubicon yet?….snuff!…We have not and are toying with the idea of watching it tonight….grunt!
3:09 pm on September 29th, 2010
Title!… Earlier tonight we came up with another awesome title for book 4….snort!… I sure hope Spencer decides to have a contest! …chorkel!
3:20 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio: I'm watching Rubicon right now.
3:23 pm on September 29th, 2010
Melanie – such good news about Dan. Tell Zoe that celebrating birthdays is an absolute must, Wookie always celebrates his with some new toys, special treat and a great long walk in a new place – ah the smells or in the one "authorized" place he can go swimming without getting a bath afterwards.
Also Wookie's Dad didn't read a chapter a night by complete choice – he had help with the restraint!
3:28 pm on September 29th, 2010
Stover!…When was the last time I told you I loved you?….snort!….Can I come live with you? She is in a really bad mood and hasn’t even apologized for the claw clipping tragedy I endured this morning…grunt!… There it is again! She’s eating cottage cheese out of the carton again…gag!
3:34 pm on September 29th, 2010
Debbie!…That whole restraining part is kind of confusing….snort!…Poor Wookie, he’s a “Get Things Done” kind of Agent…grunt!…He must have been very frustrated during that whole month – one chapter a day…snort! … Although, he never lets on to such things, the Gentleman that he is…grunt!…..We tried to do one chapter a day until we got past chapter 25.….wheeze! …After that it was a blow-out!
3:38 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio, Rio, Rio,
You must not diss Alice's lovely fur which is all natural, if you don't count a little hydrogen peroxide (for cleaning purposes only) when she was just out of the woods. Goodness that toe clipping must really have put you in a snit!
Don't make me give you the eyes.
Alice Johnson
(Who likes cottage cheese but uses a bowl. It's from milk, silly)
3:39 pm on September 29th, 2010
The same thing happened to me in those last chapters Mr Rio,
Totally could not stop!
Sort of like the luge in the winter Olympics.
3:40 pm on September 29th, 2010
Gosh,
Now we are hungry. BBL
>^..^<
3:51 pm on September 29th, 2010
Ahhh!…The Luge! What great memories of sending you down the Luge untethered my dear Alice…heh! heh!
4:21 pm on September 29th, 2010
Zoë has not gotten to the Nun yet. Sigh. She's taking her time with this book. Way too long is my thought.
Everyone must be reading tonight. . .
Except Riö and Alice and Myself. I wonder if we'll even get to #100?
Signing off, Melanie
4:22 pm on September 29th, 2010
You can come live with me Rio and I'll fry some bacon for you.
Rubicon was very good. It's getting scary.
4:29 pm on September 29th, 2010
Stover!….My friend thinks you would Kill Me With Kindness!…snort!….I say “YES!!”….grunt!…. We are watching Rubicon and cracked up over the line the big guy in the tie said at the cafeteria, “Nobody tells me nothing.”….wheeze!…He has all the top intelligence on his desk, but doesn’t know what’s going on with his co-worker (s)…heh! …funny.
4:39 pm on September 29th, 2010
We are wiped out…We just finished TFAT. It is an excellent book. An amazing book. We are so thankful that it has been a quiet evening here and there were no interruptions while reading. It doesn't get any better than this. Spence has dropped little hints all along on this blog about things that were in the book, but we didn't know he was doing it. I will say no more, except, tee hee, "breaking rocks in the hot sun".
4:41 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio, I think Stover would still insist that you get your toenails trimmed when needed.
4:41 pm on September 29th, 2010
I wonder if Rubicon is a series that will continue or if this is a one shot deal.
4:44 pm on September 29th, 2010
Greetings, plunderer peeps! Jasper here coming to you on a new laptop that now has SOUND! Yipee! It doesn't get better than that! My mom is skipping and blurring because she can watch Dexter on the laptop and hear something now. Me? I'm just waiting for bacon.
4:52 pm on September 29th, 2010
Hey everybody! I have bad news tonight — Mom has tennis elbow. Although I'm not sure why — I've never ever seen her with a tennis racquet. She says the doctor said it's a repetitive movement injury — maybe from shelving books or checking them in or something. Anyway, now she has to wear a band around her arm and put ice on it to stop it from hurting, but it's not working yet! The worst part is that it's her left elbow — and she's left-handed!
4:55 pm on September 29th, 2010
Stover!… Interesting question…sniff!…I really like all the characters so far, I hope it is not a one time deal…sniff!…Hopefully the writers are clever enough to keep the intrigue going…grunt!
Ugh!…Now she is eating soup out of the pan…snort!…She must have had a worse day than I did…sniffle!
4:58 pm on September 29th, 2010
Gosh!…Tennis Elbow on a Librarian!!…snort!…That’s a first, maybe…sniffle!…I thought that was an injury free profession…heh!
5:04 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio: She sprained her ankle during storytime once! She made the mistake of sitting on her feet while she was reading stories, then when it was time to move over to the craft table her feet were asleep, and when she took a step she twisted her ankle! Libraries are dangerous places!
Mollypop: You're right about the storm being here — it's rained for two days now, but that's a good thing because we hadn't had any rain for at least a month.
5:05 pm on September 29th, 2010
Rio: I think that you need to give your friend a pug kiss.
Kirby: I hope the tennis elbow gets better soon.
I hope that Rubicon does continue.
I'm going to read a few more chapters now.
5:14 pm on September 29th, 2010
Chet: Tell Spence and Bernie to check out an article in the October issue of Smithsonian magazine. It's called "Running Dry," and it's about the Colorado River, and how it's not doing so well. The article quotes a board member of the Water Research Foundation. Patricia Mulroy said people need a "fundamental, cultural attitude change about water supply in the Southwest. It's not abundant, it's not reliable, it's not going to always be there."
Looks like Bernie's right to be worried!!!

Rio,
I wondered what happened to that luge. It was supposed to be a training run Rio.
But the look on your face when I emerged unscathed with my tail up was worth every hair raising second. Maybe you should try it sometime. It might take care of your toenail problem.
Heh heh heh.

Mom is now choosing a new book to start. It is going to be non- fiction because TFAT is so good, she is afraid she wouldn't like any other fiction book right now no matter how good it is. Oh dog, I think she is going to read a book on Coast Guard rescues in the Bering Sea. I'm not reading that book.
Kirby, I hope your mom's elbow stops hurting soon and that the ice works. That injury can be painful.

Mom got an I-phone yesterday and has been playing with it all day. The keys are a little small for my taste. Late, tired.
