Molly, that isn’t our pic…just one that has been circulating on Facebookie. I think it was sent from California as a mock on us Eastcoasters. But Mom said she got real dizzy during the quake too. She was on the 3rd floor of a building, and the roof is just above. Things must have been rolling around on the roof, because she said it was very noisy too.

Did anyone notice that Admin loves loves loves me so much that he mistakenly names everyone else “Buddy” ? heh!
Dawson, my mom wanted that book so bad, but you kept outbidding, as was everyone else on everything else. So she had to eliminate some things in her quest. She is most interested in hearing about White Wings, since she loves books about sailing, ever since her first trip to St. Michaels where she picked up a book whose name she cannot recall. It was all about this husband and wife’s sailing adventures from Long Island, since the 60s.

Love the “Earthquake Damage” photo. Geez-louise, the way some people are carrying on here, you would think they just survived the apocolypse.
Dawson – it is a lovely book, isn’t it? Mama read it years ago when she first knew Malanie and the Pack. Ask Melanie about the personal side of the magic in that book.
Its the Wonderful Wednesday off for BOTH Mama and Dad, so they are off on incredible adventures like Recycling and Errands and Bank and Leather Shopping and Grocery Shopping.
Meanwhile, Gilly and I are stuck home with nothing to do but lounge around with our bones and chewies.

Nana is relieved. She talked to No.2 Son in D.C. last night and all is well. We knew there wasn’t a lot of damage and no one was reported hurt, but the White House and Pentagon were evacuated. He said there was a news report that said the Washington Monument was slightly tilted (think Leaning Tower of Pisa) By a miniscule amount, no doubt.
Melanie: You are right. Some of these news stations love to dramatize everything way out of proportion. You are living right in the area being described and can’t believe what you are hearing.

Vacation!…. Heh!snort!….My friend is fit to be tied. Now they have moved on from the “which hotels should we stay at” stage to the “what do we need to take” stage of the vacation-from-hell planning ….snort!…. Every time my friend sits down to read her book, her mother comes and sits down across from her and starts listing off crap that she thinks my friend and I should pack for the trip….grunt! … “You better take your allergy medication. She’s got all those Kats you know.”….gurgle!….I didn’t know her sister had Kats – let the fighting begin! …woooo! wheee!…. My friend is deathly allergic to Kats. This is not going to be fun at all for her. I am going to have a blast chasing those guys around the house stirring up even more fur and dust….snorkle! heh!
Delusion!… Then there is the driving aspect of the trip to consider….grunt!….Her mother will allow my friends older brother to drive her car, until it changes from straight, and I mean straight highway driving through Nebraska, to the slightly confusing interchange connections in Omaha. She thinks she should navigate this part of the journey because she did it before, oh about 12 years ago….cough!….Her mother doesn’t think her brother can deal with this on his own….heh!… Now, I don’t know about her brothers driving, but I do know about her mother’s driving. It is atrocious! And downright scary….wheeze!….If we get on the freeway with her driving we will all die a horrible death squished in-between those huge trucks! Mark my words. …grunt!

Riö, I once took YSAS, his girlfriend and two of his cousins on the “Road Trip from Hell”. Sounds like you are going to have more of the same!
YSAS said that after the earthquake he had to go down into the SUB basement of his building. It was built as a Chinese clothing factory in the 1800’s. As he’s going down the second set of stairs he thought, “Oh, my God, I’m THAT guy in all of the disaster movies!”
Luckily, he came back out. (after painting some pipes red for some weird building code).

Thanks for the cute photo of Audrey, Spence, and glad that she has been given the go ahead for normal activity.
Now that it is all behind Audrey, I’ll tell the rest of the story about the Border Collie. A few week after his ACL surgery, the vet had to go back and in and put a pin in his knee because it kept displacing. Everything was fine after that second surgery. Mom wasn’t worried that this would happen to Audrey because the Border Collie was one of a kind when it came to some medical issues.

Itinerary!…..So, as far as I can figure out from the heated conversations I’ve listened in on…heh!… We will stay over in a town called Council Bluffs on Thursday. There are riverboat casinos that everyone wants to go gambling on…snort!….I can’t wait to go gambling!!…woooo!….I’ve got my little gambling hat all packed in my little knapsack already!…gruff!…. Then the next day we head out to a town called Brooklyn. This is where my friends sister lives on 3 or 4 acres of useless land and a falling down house ….grunt!…We have to hang around here till 3:00 before we can check into the next hotel….sniff!…So Friday is Visiting-Day, Saturday is another Gambling-Day at some reservation somewhere, and Sunday is Fishing-Day and Monday is Leaving-Day. This is the day my friend is looking forward to… chorkel! …My friend says “Visiting Day” will be a joke because her sister doesn’t “visit”….sniff! ….Every time her sister comes out here to “visit” her mother, the sister hides in a corner with a book and never says anything….wheeze! …Although, she must say enough to her mother at some point to leave with her pockets full of cash….grumble!

Clean clothes have been a scarcity in the house lately because I haven’t made it to the laundry mat for quite a while. After taking AJ to pick up the dog truck from the mechanic this morning, I stopped to do laundry and was rewarded.
As I walked in, I noticed a woman struggling to fold her clean clothes. From the angle, I couldn’t see the reason but after I loaded the washer I turned and saw the reason for her struggle. In one arm she cradled a pup while trying to fold laundry with one hand.
I held at my arms and the woman handed me the pup. I held the Six week old mutt until her mother’s chores were finished. Oh, she was wonderful. She slept, she yawned, she recieved tummies. Her mother thanked me for my help, which wasn’t a sacrfice of personal comfort in the slightest.
Laundry seemed an easier chore today and I was reminded of Macy’s words about how we must be kind and cherish each other.

Buddy: When I am done reading White Wings I could send it to you to read. You would have to sign it and send it back to me. Unless another Plunderer wanted to read it then you would send it to them and I would eventually get back a book full of paw-prints. This book will take me a week or two to savor…especially as I am working the next 4 days and now a co-worker is out on medical leave so I will be extending my short shifts next week into l2 hour ones.

Cooking!….My friend doesn’t get to cook anymore…sniff!…Well, hardly ever. The kitchen is always a battleground…grunt!… So she just gave up trying. She seems terribly unhappy about this. Although, after some consideration, I don’t think it is just the no-cooking that is bugging her…sniffle!… Not having our own place, not having a decent vacation to look forward too, not being able to help with the garden and not really responsible for anything except getting up to go to the busy place day after day…wheeze!….It’s all getting her down lately…wuffle!….I don’t know how to help her…snuffle!

Walk!…I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that we are walking tonight even though it is hot as hell out there yet…snort!…Walking far far far! Walking till our eyes bug out!…heh!…Hey, that means it will be an easy night for me, right?…chorkel!…. Its early yet, so no walking for about an 50 minutes or so…wheeze!cough!
Mad!…Now everyone is mad again. Seems her mother was cooking hamburgers for supper and put the fries outside to cook in the little roaster oven on the patio….heh!…Well, everyone knows fries don’t cook very fast in the little roaster oven on the patio…sniff!…So she kept calling me and my friend up for supper and the fries weren’t cooked. They were limp…snuff!…So we’d go downstairs and then about 2 minutes later she would call us again and we’d go upstairs and the fries wouldn’t be cooked…duh!…So finally my friend in a fit of fiery (not really) took the damned fries out of the little roaster oven and threw them on the table alongside the cold hamburgers….chorkel!…We had under-done fries and cold hamburgers for supper tonight. Tasted great to me!…gruff!yeep!

Rio: It must be a very hard thing to get used to…not being able to do what you want when you want. Maybe you could have a talk with your mother and try to have some kitchen time, some garden space and some degree of privacy and control.
I think it will be fun to send White Wings cross-country. I have 4 names so far: Oley Howlers (if they want), Bear Spirit Dog and Buddy & T.C.(is that one household?), Mollypop and Rio. It’ll work like a phone tree with each one sending to the next one on the list until there are no more takers. Now I’m going to read some more. So far I have researched Mystic Seaport – Museum of the Americas and the Sea and Herreshoff Museum, two of the places mentioned in the book.

Rio: Dawson has some very good suggestions to hopefully help your friend. If she had something to look forward to or enjoyed (other than torturing you with those brutal walks and making beautiful quilling projects) it might help her get out of this funk.

We don’t experience much thunder and lightening here, but when we do it is ‘Scared Dog, party of three” trying to find refuge under the bed. Those three scared dogs being Tenz, Luna and Belle Starr. As bad as the thunderstorm might be, I can’t imagine B. Stover finding refuge under the bed or in the closet.

Well, that got my heart rate going…I was in the kitchen tonight getting ready to go out and do dog chores when the dogs started to bark. Alert! Alert!
I pulled on my jacket and stepped onto the front step and saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Too big to be Belle Starr. I soon found our resident mama moose and one of her calves standing less than 20 feet away on our front lawn.
Who startled who more, I don’t know. I ran in the house, and mama and baby ran down the trail.

Hurricane!…. We just watched the news and saw how large Irene is!…snort!…Wow! It is huge. It will hit the Carolinas and then eventually pass across MA and the Cape sometime on Sunday…wheeze!! …I hope everybody battens down the hatches!!
Bed!…I’m off to bed. Hopefully I won’t dream about hail storms and hurricanes…wheeze!

Don’t worry, guys. Mom just guaranteed that Irene won’t be hitting us. She not only bought flashlights and batteries and storm provisions, she also bought a big plastic container to put everything in. And now that we’re prepared, Irene is heading east! Yesterday we were in the “cone of concern.” Today the cone starts at the South Carolina/North Carolina border. It looks like those of you on up the coast into New England are more likely to get hit than we are.
By the way, ironically enough, Mom and Dad’s worst hurricane experience wasn’t here in South Carolina. It was in Massachusetts, when they were stationed at Fort Devens. Hurricane Gloria hit New England, the power was off for several days, and the neighbor’s tree fell into the yard and wiped out our fence.
Oh, and their second-worst hurricane experience was a storm they weren’t even in! When Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, my family was in the process of moving to Fort Drum in upstate New York. The soldiers from the post were sent to Florida to help with the clean-up, and the guy who was in the quarters Mom and Dad were supposed to get had his orders cancelled. So my family had to spend three months living in the guest house and hotel rooms until they got quarters. And Cassie the dog and Chopsticks and Rascal the kats had to live in a kennel!!!

Rebecca: All I can say is that not one of the hurricanes Mom and Dad have been in was silent! But I’m not 100 percent sure we’re out of harm’s way yet. I think I remember hearing that the weatherman was wrong one time. Maybe he’ll be wrong again and the hurricane will came back our way. You just never know.
But like I said, just the fact that she’s prepared means Mom’s pretty sure it won’t hit us. (She even bought a plastic bin that isn’t see-through, and after she filled it with the new flashlights, batteries and snacks she hid it. That way all the snacks won’t get eaten before the next hurricane hits. So we’ll always be prepared, and the storms will go elsewhere, like back out to sea where they won’t hurt anybody!!!)

Kirby, my dad, the emergency preparedness guru for our city, says you should also add water purification tablets to your kit. We have a backpack from the RedCross filled with all kinds of goodies.
