“What did the vet say?” says Admin.

“Audrey’s ACL repair seems to be going well,” says Spence. “The waiting room was full of dogs in various stages of ACL recovery. Never knew this was so widespread.”

“Did you tell him what she’s done?”

“The part about somehow opening a pocket door, then pushing out a tall screen, frame and all, followed by a leap to freedom over a big basket of kids’ building blocks and down to the lawn? Yeah.”

“Sounds like he was skeptical.”

“I left out the part about the nice neighbor, and Audrey relaxing on her couch overnight. Also playing nicely with her Cavalier and generally being a polite guest.”

“Is Audrey two-faced?”

“At least.”

Welcome Patches and General.

Good morning Chet, Spence, and Admin.

Mom is wfh today so she is letting us keep up with the blog. Too hot to do much else, altho not nearly as bad as others, like Maggie, have it.

LOL about Audrey the polite guest. We had a big bro who used to visit his neighbors on time for their dinner. Would sit by their table and get scraps, then lay on their floor to watch t.v. with them afterward. When he could smell Mom and Pop making dinner, he was ready to head home.

    Good morning.
A quick hello and good bye from me. I fell asleep after I turned off the alarm clock and I never do that.
Sounds like Audrey needed a night away and thought for sure you’d say NO. The reward is all the extra attention. Good dog, Audrey!

Audrey, Spence didn’t need the vet to tell him you are bouncing back after the surgery. did he?

Rio, Did you ever find out why her mother left you alone all day?

Barb&Maggie: That heat index is over the top for sure! Yesterday someone was mentioning a sprinkler, but suppose the birds would freak out. In Palm Desert water mist systems are used to cool patrons off for patio dining.

Hoping it will be cooler for you all soon. Isn’t this unusual weather everywhere?

Audrey is a member of the Nation within the Nation. That means she is who she is in the moment. So she can’t be two faced, because she is always herself!

Hmmm. Not sure that made as much sense written down as it did in my head . . .

    Good Morning!

So glad Audrey’s story ended well, and that she didn’t damage her recent surgery, with all that leaping.

Heat is supposed to reach the peak today and then start cooling off to the mid 80’s which is much safer. Thank you all, for the concern about all o,ur critters. The goats will be ok, they live in the desert where these temps are common, so as long as they have plenty of cold water and shade, they will be fine.

Barb is doing what she can for the chicks, and everyone is ok so far. She put newspapers over the southern windows, so the sun
is not beating in. It really isn’t possible to put a mist spray in there, so she is just taking fresh water out twice a day, and letting them out in their grass pen early, where there is plenty of shade. The new fan helped, because it keeps air circulating.

Debbie LM, Barb said to tell you on that frozen treat to use over ripe bananas, like you would use for banana bread. Also, it seems to freeze harder than ice cream, so she has to let it sit out for a bit before scooping. She said next time she will freeze it in individual servings. It is quite the hit around here!

Good morning all. Our upstairs housemate the Great Pyrenees Callie used to have the nickname Dis-aPyrenees. She seemed to know instinctively if there was a door or gate open anywhere when no one was looking. She never ran away…running takes too much energy for a Pyr. But since she and our Gramp walk miles and miles around our neighborhood, she knows everyone and they know her. Gramp not only has her microchipped but she wears a tag with just his phone number on it,a la Whitey-Lance. Diviner the years there have been calls about giant cuddle dogs hanging out at family barbecues or in dens watching tv with the kids or sitting outside a fence watching the sheep. Fortunately Callie is a lovely and sweet dog so the neighbors get a kick out of her strolls in the outside world rather than report her to the dog officer.

Sometimes a guy or gal just has to do what a guy or gal has to do. I remember that unfortunate incident in Vermont last year with the skunk. Mom and dad had thought they had barricaded me nicely on the porch (pllus my back was still a bit sore, so they didn’t expect to move much anyway). However, when that intriguing critter went sauntering by, of course I had to push aside the barricade, go flying off of the porch, and run after it, until — well, you know — the awful thing that happened next. Wookie

P.S. Just had a nice walk this morning with mom and dad before it got too warm. We met up with one of my new friends in the neighborhood, a nine month old pug/beagle mix (I think they call her a puggle) named Maddie. She is really adorable too and a real sweet kid. Rio, I told her all about you and she seemed very interested. Just saying . . .

Nah, Audrey isn’t two-faced. She just wanted to go visiting.
Hopefully, if she pulls a stunt like this again, she will return to the same house.
Mom has twice had dogs, both Huskies, that would escape from their yard as soon as their people went to work, and show up at mom’s front door. She would keep the dogs until the owners got back home. The owners eventually got the escape problems solved.
We are glad that Audrey is recovering so well from the ACL surgery.

Melanie: What do you use to treat the water in the pool? Mom used to have an in-ground pool at her old place, and one of her huskies loved swimming in it (much as Siber-H won’t believe that). But she used chlorine. She says that If we got one at this place, she wants to use something more dog friendly.

My Great Escapes are legendary. Like the time I spied a perp trying to take our trash can. When I leaped through the window screen he put it back rather quickly as you can imagine. Then as long as I was out, hey why not explore a bit? Mom came home to not only a busted out window screen, but also broken blinds. I tried to tell her it wasn’t my fault because Bear takes his Guard Dog duties very seriously, but she seemed more concerned about all the broken stuff. What’s up with that?

Bear, could your Mom tell that a perp tried to take your trash can? We find that our people can’t seem to understand us (or believe us?) when we tell them everything that happened on the farm while they were away and we were in charge.

I thought this was rather amusing – Nana not so much. She agreed to house-sit for #1 son when he and the family travel to Norway this month. The date in her mind was the 21st – tomorrow. That meant she must be in Seattle by this evening as they are taking the early flight. She is not packed. Not prepared. Even though within driving distance of home, it is a 90 minute drive. Today she found out the actual departure date is next Wednesday, giving her a one week reprieve. Saved by the bell!

  45. Masquers
    5:14 pm on July 20th, 2011

Saved by the bell. Meanings we are most familiar with today are: saved by the bell in school, a boxer saved by the bell in the ring. But, the most obscure meaning is from the distant past. In bygone days it was not uncommon for people to be buried alive. As a preventative measure, people would be buried with a bell in their coffin so, if they had, inadvertently, been buried alive they could ring the bell and help would arrive.

  46. Barb & Maggie

Hey, y’all! I’m just here for a little bit, then Mom’s going to turn off the computer and go to Vacation Bible School. The theme is “The Lord is my Shepherd,” and Mom’s teaching the science unit. She decided to emphasize the “green pastures” and “still waters,” so she’s having the kids make terrariums out of soda bottles. When her first group showed the other group their terrariums, the kids were all saying, “That’s not fair — we want to make those, too.” Mom assured them that they would be doing that tonight. It made Mom feel good that she picked a “cool” project for them to do! It almost made up for Sunday night, when the kids were bypassing her station — “What are you doing here, just making something?” — to play the games. Mom thinks if she had had prizes to give away, more of the kids would have come to her table!!!

Good morning everyone. Hope you’re getting a reprieve from the heat soon.

I love all the escape stories!

Cricket has taken to sleeping outside at night – never happened in 9 years. Suddenly, mid winter, she wants to be in her kennel (but barks to come in at 4am). Has anyone else’s dog done that?

  54. BearSpiritDog

  56. Basil and Sage
    7:13 pm on July 20th, 2011

Hey Cricket – that kind of behavior is only acceptable in KATS! Our motto is “There isn’t any closed door that we don’t want open”.
Good news from this front – Mama has been to Mr. Accupuncture SuperHero (MASH from now on) twice now and she is FINE! Her back doesn’t hurt one little bit – even in some old injured areas that have always hurt. And MASH is going to treat our Dad for his asthma next week, and then help Mama with some of her other stuff and…..Thank Dog Melanie told us to call him!
(We hope he can fix you tomorrow too!)
Over and out for now – Mama is on her way to AQ’s for pottery lessons. She is dancing and twirling on her way out the door.

  57. Siber-H
    7:22 pm on July 20th, 2011

Liz, I’m thinking about this and not coming up with any good answers. Mom has never had a dog do what Cricket is doing, but she has been through some strange canine behaviors.

Is there anything different at all going on in your house…like different noises, different smells…new carpet or tile or paint? Have the two-legged’s routines changed in any way? Could the house be too hot at night for Cricket? Can you think of anything that might be frightening Cricket that being in her kennel would make her feel safer? Has Cricket been on meds that have been changed?
All my questions are just things for you to consider.

I would sleep outside in the winter just as mom’s first Siberian would have, but mom won’t allow it. Something different is going on with Cricket. I don’t think she has suddenly turned into part Husky.

  58. Siber-H
    7:36 pm on July 20th, 2011

Liz, mom thought of one other thing…Mom’s first Siberian, the female, started waking her up around 4:30 am because she wanted her breakfast. This was totlly abnormal behavior for the girl so mom hauled her off to the vet who did bloodwork. It turns out her thyroid levels were a bit low, she was put on a low dose of thyroid meds, and she never woke mom up at 4:30 again.
There is a possibility something like this could be going on with Cricket.

  60. OleyHowlers
    8:29 pm on July 20th, 2011

Liz, Sometimes we dogs just find a new routine that appeals to us. Like Dima, who was always the most excited to come into the house for “sofa time”. Now when Mom calls him to come in, he looks at her for a moment then trots off and goes around the farm, then back to the patio and under his table (his “cave”). Mom was pretty burnt up at him today. But you know…we just like a change-up every now and again.

  61. Kirby T. Penworthy
    8:34 pm on July 20th, 2011

Hey, y’all! I’m back! Mom’s all finished with Vacation Bible School now. The second night of terrarium making went well — except for the little girl who dumped a bottle full of soil in her lap. But Mom and my girl got everything cleaned up, so all’s well that ends well! Turns out that one of the little ones who was supposed to make a terrarium tonight was leaving today for the beach, so she started crying last night because she wasn’t going to be able to make one. So one of the boys who was in Mom’s class last night helped her make one (Mom had already left at that point). Mom was glad the kids liked the project!

  62. Liz
    8:44 pm on July 20th, 2011

Hey guys, thanks, those are all really good suggestions. There aren’t any new routines in the house I don’t think… it does get warm in the house at night but this is a dog who sits four inches away from the heater with it blasting in her face til she’s panting from the heat, so I’m not sure about that one (and definitely not a sign of party Husky, i think!)

SHe is on medication for the arthritis so i think most likely is the meds changing her, or her just thinking she’ll try something new. She has her eccentric side.

Masquers, her barking DID wake me but it’s late morning here – I checked in as soon as I got to the busy place. It’s morning coffee time (latte from the cafe downstairs).

I haven’t directly heard what plans Dawson is making for her mail. She did talk about shipping the fan to the parents house. If that is the way it will happen then there is no rush at all on the shipping. snort. I have no idea when she will next be down here, but sometime in the fall or early winter I assume.

Have to go watch more Tour de France. This will be the last few days. It is getting very exciting now. A Frenchman is in yellow and all the supposed winners are behind him in time. But they are in the Alps and someone could get a really good break and that would be quite exciting.

    Twins won today. YES!

Shipping!…This is swell news …heh!…”Swell,” I am going to revive that word, I like it…snort!….The more time my friend has, the better the “surprise” present will be along with the Fan…heh!…Don’t ask me, I have no idea what she has up her sleeve for the surprise…wuffle!…Because it is Dawson, I wouldn’t bother sending her any surprise prize, but that’s just me…grunt!

Rio: I will be going to see the fan sometime after October 31st.
Snowhook Bella: Haven’t you received my letter yet? Carpola! I will be reading the ARC after the book has been released. I hope Dawson can get the ARC before the book is released. That is part of the fun of winning it…to get to read it ahead of time.

Me, I will listen till its over. Her, she will drop off the minute her head hits the pillow…snorkel!

We are sleepy too. The Rockie’s pitcher is pitching a good game, but we need more runs. I’ll sleep with my paws crossed.

What a co-inky-dink! Mom thought I was acting strange so last week I went to the v-e-t. She stole some blood and told us that my thyroid was low. Since I have been on my meds, everyone is telling me that I look very svelt. Love it!

    Hey all,
We couldn’t get on the computer because Mom had to log in for work again. She has to do that a lot this week and next week she said.

Anyway, we are hoping Dawson gets that ARC real soon..or whats the sense of spending all that money on it.

    Good nite !

    Me too!
Off to bed early so I can wake up on time tomorrow.
Hope Snowhook gets my letter tomorrow. I’m afraid the Canadian Post Office sent the letter to Arkansas instead of Alaska. Darn Canucks! (I should’ve gotten a Paypal account.)

Dawson– if you are still awake, check the posts on the dark side from the day before. Rebecca posted that she has received your check and would be sending out the mailing addresses today to all who donated the items you won. So hopefully the ARC should be winging it’s way to you shortly.

And just for Rio, Woo! Woo! The Rockies won again tonight. Take that, Atlanta.

I’m off to my couch, too. Unlike you two-leggeds, I don’t have to worry about getting up on time. I don’t have any kind of schedule to stick to. And this is my favorite time of the year because Dad’s the same way! During the school year he’s always at class or practice or a game — even on Saturdays! — so I hardly get to see him. But during the summer he’s home all day! Of course, that makes Mom grumble because she has to “earn the bacon” — I’m all for that! — while Dad just sits around all day. (He’s really working on projects, but when Mom asked him what he got done today he said he had worked on the porch. She asked him if he got it done, and he said no. So she said that meant he didn’t get anything done today!)

Dawson: Wookie’s right — as usual! Rebecca said she would send the addresses out this evening because you were avoiding the marauding goats by having your stuff sent lots of different places. I just checked my SDD and nothing has appeared yet, but Rebecca sometimes joins the party late, so maybe she’s still at work.

Many years ago I had a cat named Sparkles.

What can I say? I was young and she was sparkly.

Anyway Sparkles had thyroid troubles and I had to go to a regular pharmacy to get her pills. When they were ready for me to pick them up they used to call on the intercom. “Sparkles Drew, your prescription is ready.”
I would slink up, very embarrassed, and pay for the pills and get out of there as fast as I could. I was sure everyone was talking about that silly girl names Sparkles.

After that my cats were all named people names.

Goodnight all, except Liz. G’day Liz (and Cricket)
