Audio News: A Fistful of Collars
“There have been questions about the audio version of A Fistful of Collars,” Admin says. “Do we have answers?”
“We do,” says Spence. “The audio will be released simultaneously with the printed version (Sept. 11). It will show up soon at Amazon, B&N, etc., and in the meantime can be preordered from Recorded Books.”

“A lot of people like Jim Frangione’s narration,” Admin says.
“Including us.”
Welcome ball-playing dude, Max, Wizzer.

Good morning everyone. Sept 11th is not far away. Can’t wait. Barb’s b-day is Sept. 12th, so guess what she will be buying for herself!
Barb just got a delivery at the office – a very nice plant arrangement and a $50.00 gift certificate. It was from the two agents and the other office assistant. Pat was not part of it, but now she will be shamed into doing something. Hee, hee.
Barb said she will use the gift cert. at the local garden center/gift shop. They have nice things, so she will get something to remind of her time here.
11:26 am on August 2nd, 2012
I like the Frangione narration also. I gave my brother the audio of THAT last year and he is now reading Dog Who. He loves them but wants to know where Chet and Bernie live. I told him that it’s been left intentionally ambiguous.
One more day Barb!
Good morning all.
11:33 am on August 2nd, 2012
We just put a link on yesterday’s posts, but we are repeating it here- cuz we have to:

Barb – counting the hours with you. And we hope Pat actually has the ability to be shamed.
12:02 pm on August 2nd, 2012
T & G, That is a good point! And your mama should know, as she has had more than a little experience with her own Crazy Ladies!
12:27 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Jim Frangione is the best!
Yippie for Barb! We are very happy for her.
Stover, Chet and Bernie live in the Phoenix area. The clues are all in the books.
1:17 pm on August 2nd, 2012
We are big, big fans of Chet, Bernie, and Jim Frangione!
1:26 pm on August 2nd, 2012
SH: What are the clues? I’ll let my brother know.
1:34 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Clues!…Yeah, what are the clues?…sniff!
1:47 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Hello Carol! Welcome to the blog. Always nice to have a new voice jump in
1:50 pm on August 2nd, 2012
One of my brother’s guesses was Phoenix and the other was Tuscon or possibly the California desert.
2:04 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Bernie!…I thought he was in California for the longest time…sniff!
2:14 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Stover!…Guess what!?…snort!…It was Christmas in July for Beau and I…heh!…I got a Kindle and Beau got a Nook…snort!…Neither of us has been able to get the credit card out of her purse so we can start ordering things. That is damned frustrating. We thought we could use gift cards, but neither the Nook or the Kindle will let us pre-order Spencer’s E-book with a gift card…grunt!…Do you think they will work after the pub date?
2:18 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio: You have gone high tech just like SiberH!
2:21 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rebecca!…All we can do is turn them on and look at our empty shopping cart…grunt!
2:26 pm on August 2nd, 2012
The easiest way to figure out where Chet and Bernie live is by a process of elimination. We all know they live in the Southwest.
There are no places in West Texas, New Mexico, or Southern California (which I do not consider a part of the Southwest) that match the descriptions of the landscape and city that they live in. That leaves southern Arizona and Phoenix, which perfectly fit the descriptions in the book of the city, the desert, and the desert mountains. The valley is mentioned many times in the books. Phoenix is in such a huge valley with the same big time water shortage problems Bernie worries about.
I wish I could blurr you guys to Phoenix so you could see how well it matches the descriptions in the books. Spence writes beautifully about the landscape…the desert and the mountains, and the dirt roads. He also captures the different parts of the city so well…the housing developments, silly water fountains ,and the areas of the city one wouldn’t want to be found in after dark. The arroyo behind Chet and Bernie’s house is a classic touch of Phoenix and the Southwest.
I hope this helps.
2:28 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio: I’ve used gift cards on Amazon but not for a pre-order. I’m sure you can use it after the book comes out. You give then the card number and they put the value of the card on your account and take deductions off of it as you use it. It’s wonderful that you have a Kindle and a Nook!
2:34 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Thank you SH. I’m going to cut and paste your penultimate paragraph and send it to my brother. (What is arroyo?)
2:35 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Cards!…I’ve loaded my Amazon gift card onto my account, but Beau is still trying to figure out how to load his Nook Gift card onto his Nook…heh!heh!…Do I offer any help? No!
2:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio, After you have used both the Nook and Kindle for awhile, you can tell us which one you like best. This is so cool that you have both.
My Kindle will get here someday. sigh
Hi Carol and welcome!
2:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Arrorroyo!…Isn’t it a huge cactus?…snort!
2:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
No need to explain SH. I just looked up arroyo.
2:37 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Arroyo is a “brook which drains into other lakes.”.
2:37 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Hi Carol! OTAS also loves Jim Frangione. He listens to all of the Chet and Bernie books when he is commuting. I am about to go and and fix the dog dock in the dog pool for the dogs. snicker
Barb! Ummmm, a new plant for your birthday?
2:38 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Actually I like this description better: An arroyo is “a water-carved gully or channel.”
2:39 pm on August 2nd, 2012
lol I have to look up penulitmate.
2:43 pm on August 2nd, 2012
As someone who was born and raised in Phoenix (living there the first 44 years of my life), trust me that C&B live there. We referred to the area as the Valley as much as we called it Phoenix. If you needed a clue, the mention of “Potsdale” with its old town filled with art galleries sounds just more than a little bit like Scottsdale. The only location I couldn’t pinpoint was their house which, in one of the books was described as being south of the airport.
2:47 pm on August 2nd, 2012
In the Southwest an arroyo is dry until it rains hard, An impressive amount of water can flow down them then. If we have a hard rain here, mom has been known to drive around just to watch the water rushing down the arroyos. She doesn’t have to drive far. Arroyos are everywhere in the desert Southwest.
During rainy season, the public is given all sorts of safety lectures about staying out of the arroys when it rains.
So far, NM is not having a monsoon…no rainy season this year.
2:49 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Mexico!…Are you guys sure they don’t live in New Mexico?…snort!… I rather like the idea of both my favorite books and my favorite show both set in New Mexico…grunt!
2:50 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Thanks Terry. I’m glad I got backup on this Phoenix thing.
Mom has never lived there.
2:51 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio, Terry and I promise you it is not New Mexico.
2:51 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Thanks Terry.
Hello Carol.
2:52 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Ohh!…And my favorite SiberH!…heh!
2:55 pm on August 2nd, 2012
SiberH!…Aren’t you digging an Arrorroyoyou in your backyard?…heh!
2:58 pm on August 2nd, 2012
So…everyone slept in today?
Hi Carol: Welcome to the club!
3:01 pm on August 2nd, 2012
We had originally thought they were in California as well. However, we seem to recall in one of the earlier books a reference about being about to look into or towards New Mexico, which you really can’t do in California, so that was what sealed the deal for us that it was Arizona. As to Tuscon versus Phoenix, my dad really doesn’t know the local geography well enough to be able to differentiate (I think it is part of his New Mexico snobiness at work there).

3:05 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Siber and Terry, we always sort of thought Phoenix when we read the books (no, we have never been there), but since the name is never mentioned, we thought maybe it was just a fictional place. You guys do seem to be able to pinpoint it as Phoenix, and so now it has dawned on us that Chet wouldn’t know it by that name. He would only know it as “the valley” if that is how the locals refer to it. Very interesting. Thanks to you both for clearing this up!
3:08 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Here’s an interesting article on “arroyo.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arroyo_(creek)
3:13 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Yes, I have more than one arroyo started in my yard and if it would ever rain hard, I could have water flowing in them for mom.
There is a reason why both Bernie and mom are fascinated by water. They see so little of it.
It is interesting that Spence, living where he does, understands this.
3:26 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Siber’s mom: You just aren’t getting out enough. I heard there is water out the ying yang down there. Just drive around those new developments and golf courses!
3:31 pm on August 2nd, 2012
I’m surrounded by five Great Lakes!
Howlers: Those are fighting words!
3:34 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Spencer!…Who really knows where ole pointy head lives…heh!heh!
3:40 pm on August 2nd, 2012
There aren’t that many new housing developments here because of the crash, but, oh yes, the golf courses. Mom’s opinion of those is the same as Bernie’s. We have lots of golf courses here….great climate to play golf in.
I say all the golf courses should be turned into dog parks.
3:46 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Siber-H for Governor of New Mexico!!
3:47 pm on August 2nd, 2012
When the solar flares take out all the power grids there will be no water for the golf courses…sneeze!
3:50 pm on August 2nd, 2012
We just turned the page on Snowhook’s calendar to August. We are crying here.
3:57 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Oh, my sweet Rory. How I miss that girl.
4:15 pm on August 2nd, 2012
We miss you Rory, though your spirit will always be with the team.
Melanie: I saw a black Newf walking around the lake today. How many Newfs fit on your pool dock and why doesn’t it sink?
(Minnesota is the land of 10,000+ lakes although they are not great lakes).
4:21 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Hi all!
Look at you Rio, with a Kindle, and Beau a Nook. What lucky dogs you are! I’m a Nook girl myself.
I was blurry eyed this morning when I turned the Snowhook calendar page.
4:21 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Lakes!…What we here call lakes are probably puddles to Michagonians…sniff!
4:24 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Beau!…Get outta my chair!…grump!
4:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
The Great Lakes are beautiful. My favorite is Lake Michigan where we went on vacation when I was a kid. The sand dunes are wonderful to run down. Lake Superior is very cold but it is a beautiful area there and in the UP (Upper Peninsula) especially in the fall when the leaves change color.
4:39 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rose!…Don’t tell Beau how to load his Nook Gift card…snort!…He needs to figure this stuff out by himself…grunt!
5:03 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Macy and her brood up top!
I wonder what will be the first book Beau downloads onto his Nook once he figures out how to load the gift card?
5:06 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Melanie, The plant is for Barb’s last day, not her birthday which is in Sept.
One hour left today.
Speaking of power grids, Rio, did you see that there were about 640 million people in India who lost power. Evidently the power grid to half of the country shut down.
Als,o did anyone look at the full moon last night? We have a Blue Moon this month, meaning there will be 2 in August, one on the 1st and one on the 31st. That will not happen again till 2015. Siber, it is also called the Wolf Moon, for your benefit.
5:17 pm on August 2nd, 2012
India’s power grid is outdated as is ours…sneeze!…It won’t take much for the whole thing to blow. Then we will all be like rabid animals trying to survive…grunt!
5:29 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Garden!…Barb will survive because she has a magic garden…snort!…Oh wait, she is moving and leaving it behind. Someone else will survive on the magical vegetables and fruit while Barb lives in the city…wheeze!
5:32 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Beau – and we bet that the kibble supply will all dry up too
5:46 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Kibble comes from the cupboard which needs no electricity…snuff!
6:25 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Hmmm, I was trying to tell a joke there. Sorry Barb.
Okay, The dog dock is not on top of the water, be it an arryyyooohooo or Lake Michigan. The dog duck is about 2 feet below the surface of the water for those Newfs who do not like the deep end of the pool. Patsy does not like the deep end of the pool but at least she gets in the pool this year.
The others walk down the steps onto the dock. It is 10 feet long and 2 feet wide. From there the more adventurous swim.
In DOI, the mine where nefarious things happen is in NM. But they go over to NM to get there.
6:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
And they have to go out of state to get to the summer camp in Colorado.
6:36 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Which actually involves 2 states, due to having to use roads.
6:37 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Which actually involves 2 states, due to having to use roads.

6:39 pm on August 2nd, 2012
You may be wondering to yourselves – “Why does Spencer write about Phoenix but alias it with a generic sounding name like “The Valley?”” I know, and all of you will know after September 11. That is as much of a spoiler as I am good for.
6:40 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Also, in DOI, it is NM where Chet is in the dog pound. The only thing not accurate in that part of the story was, at that time, small NM towns gassed the animals instead of the lethal injection.
The state has since passed a law against using the gas chamber for animals.
6:46 pm on August 2nd, 2012
How comes Terry knows stuff that we don’t know. The plot thickens.
7:19 pm on August 2nd, 2012
SiberH: Terry said that he read the 5th Chet and Bernie book ages ago. He’s a librarian with an “in”.
Terry: Right? How do you do it?
7:50 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Dawson, now, Dawson. I don’t remember Terry saying he read the 5th book ages ago.
7:58 pm on August 2nd, 2012
You guys take care. (whispering) Terry, what ever book you might have that might not be in the “open” you can pass along to me!
Time for bed.
TTFN
8:15 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rose!…She would know!…snort!…She’s been reading or has read the ARC by now…wheeze!….Remember your best friend Rose, by any other name….wuffle!
8:16 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Nothing mysterious or nefarious here. I just happened to be at BookExpo with my wife and my son (All librarians, all from Phoenix) and noticed that Spencer was autographing on that day. Just taking advantage of one of the major perks on living in New York. Of course you have to be a bookseller, publisher, author or librarian to even be there. I’m two out of four.
8:17 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Weird!….Beau’s logon was still on the page…snifff!…That last post was from me, Rio, not doom and gloom Beau…snort!
8:19 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Guess!…Lets all guess which two Terry is…heh!…My guess is Librarian and Author…sniff!
8:28 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rockies!…The burning question tonight is whether the Rockies will get swept by the Cardninals….grunt!
Tired!…My friend says she can hardly keep her eyes open so she is going for a walk without us…woooooo!…Just leave the tv on and I will be fine…snort!
8:32 pm on August 2nd, 2012
SiberH: I remember because I told him Terry he could send the book to me next.
Terry: I would’ve returned it when I was done with it. Really!
8:42 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio and Bella – please check your SDD’s when you have a chance.
We have a new theory – we think Terry B gave a hint when he said that there was nothing “Nefarious” about his knowledge…hmmmm…
8:45 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Rio, We are with you – librarian and author would be our guess.
We are going to try to recreate the magic garden at our new place. Just wait till Josh finds out that Barb intends to move 2 garbage cans full of compost with her (aka aged goat and chicken s**t).
Sorry Melanie, that joke just flew right by us.
8:54 pm on August 2nd, 2012
We guess bookseller and librarian.
8:59 pm on August 2nd, 2012
I’ll guess the same as my Fellow Sibers. There are 4 of them and only one of me. Four heads are better than one…maybe
9:23 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Guess we will find out tomorrow. Signing off for now.
9:28 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Us too…our beds are calling us. Good night all.
9:28 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Am I cheating because I went to Terry’s web site? Librarian and author.
9:35 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Well, All the Sibers were wrong.
9:56 pm on August 2nd, 2012
All you Sibers, maybe my little dainty paw could press Terry’s low lighted name on his post to get right to his web site. Or maybe you all are out digging construction projects and killing groundhogs. Or shredding secret documents.
10:01 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Princess Sam, All of us Sibers work very hard, but I will admit I never thought to go to his website.
10:05 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Sammie!…Agent 00-Wookie gave me the information…heh!…That guy is always on top of necessary information…snort!
Walks!…Are done for the day…wheeze!….Her long long long walk and our poo and pee ridden walk is Over!…grunt! …On day I will have to describe how Beau likes to poop. But not tonight, I am still too disgusted…gah!
10:16 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Gymnastics!….Rebecca, I do believe the womens gymnastics are going to start here…snort!…I will try really hard not to let on what’s happening so you can enjoy the surprises….chuffle!…I will try…heh!
10:33 pm on August 2nd, 2012
Tupper!….Go get Golinka and make her check her SDD…snort!…Run like the wind!

Night All

Rio – “run like the wind”??? Really, Pug – we Royals are far too dignified for any such exertions. But we will mention it to her in passing.

Rio: Thank you for your restraint.
11:41 pm on August 2nd, 2012

The floor exercises were wonderful! And we know who won.
Rio – you bet your curly tail we had crumpets. Just dripping with melted butter and orange marmalade. Oh wait- that was James Bond.
We re going to bed now to dream about it all over again.

2:18 pm on August 3rd, 2012
Yep – librarian and author. We’re throwing a book launch tomorrow night for my book “Google this!” Had a special t-shirt created for the occasion. More later.
11:05 am on October 12th, 2014
Very good information. Lucky me I discovered your website by accident (stumbleupon).
I’ve book-marked it for later!
