Auction (More)

“Maybe you should sum up the auction in some sort of concise way while I go out for breakfast,” says Admin.

“But – ” says Spence. The door bangs shut. The car zooms off in that noisy way that means Admin is at the wheel. “All right,” Spence says. “Here goes. From July 2 to July 10 we’re having an auction to raise money for Snowhook Kennel, our favorite Iditarod racing team. All items will be donated by the Plunderers and the kennel. Anyone – and let’s spread the word to people outside the blog – can bid on artwork and crafts specially made for the auction, quilted projects, dogsledding items, and more, including a signed advance reader copy of The Dog Who Knew Too Much, Chet and Bernie’s next adventure. Photos of all items will soon be displayed, I think.”

“Wonder if he’ll bring me back a muffin. Or even just a small coffee would be OK.”

    Good Morning.
Spence: I’m sure he means to bring you back a small coffee. But he’ll probably forget.
Publicity! The price just went up on those auction items with all this publicity targeting those fat cat (sorry cats) facebookie types.

Folks, there’s nothing wrong with the “facebookie types.” Honestly! (Said in exasperation as my mother often said it.)

You guys certainly had a riot last night. Can’t stop laughing long enough to drink my coffee. (Hope Spence gets a cuppa.)

And Rio–when will the Rockies win the Stanley Cup?

Melanie and G & B, thanks for the comments on The Search. Glad you guys agreed with me that Simon is rude and abrupt. I think that the glib comments are supposed to be clever, but my skin prickles every time he tells her to “Shut up!’ Sorry, just a personal quirk. The book is still worth while, and again it was well researched.

Nice day today, going to be in the 80s. Off work for 5 days, so have a lot of time to catch up around here.

Bee, The dressing that Barb mentioned is one her mom used to make. Fry some bacon, remove from pan, add sugar, vinegar and a little water to bacon grease (you can also add a little oil if you don’t have enlough bacon grease). Mix to your own taste, but we like it slightly sweet. Heat till boiling, then pour over leaf lettuce and chopped green onions (tops and all). The lettuce will wilt slightly. Serve immediately. It is very good.

Sorry I missed all the excitement last night, but we had some really bad thunderstorms and so I had to make sure mom did not get upset — you know how she reacts to thunder and lightning. It’s hard work but I am dog enough to do it. I was also a little bit under the weather from the last chemo treatment, but I felt a lot better by last night and I think that is now past. And only one more treatment to go, next Monday.

I don’t think the Rockies will ever win the Stanley Cup but another Denver team — the Avalanche — did several years ago. The World Series — that’s a different matter, haven’t won it yet but will one day soon, I am sure.

Melanie — mom says thanks; glad you liked the photos of the quilt. She had a lot of fun making it, as the name implies (Do the Funky Chicken), It is very funky indeed. And as you know, it was just to the rabbits that Noah had to keep saying, only two, only two. Riiiiight!

Melanie — My dad and one of his friends did the entire routine as an interpretative reading in their 9th Grade speech class back in the day. It was a big hit, although the line about the pregnant elephant was a little risque for 9th grade (it was back then anyway, although it probably would not be so today). BTW, what is a cubit anyway? Maybe B. Stover would know.

  14. Melanie
    10:19 am on June 17th, 2011

Our whole family would quote (verb) Bill Cosby’s routines. People would look at us like we were nuts.

We still do it . . . “Come around, your idiot! Come around!”

I think the answer to your question is “Well, never mind that . . .”

  15. B.Stover
    10:22 am on June 17th, 2011

Wookie: All I knew was that a cubit was an ancient form of measurement so I looked it up. It uses the forearm from elbow to fingertip. Here’s a link to the Wikipedia article. When did “cubit” come up?

Wookie, Glad you are almost finished (done) with your treatment. Way to go!

Bee, I did not include it in the recipes, because it is one of those – add some of this and some of that till it tastes right – kind of things. Never really sure of the measurements. Oh, and forgot to say that you add the crumbled bacon on the top after tossing.

  21. Barb & Maggie
    10:42 am on June 17th, 2011

Sounds like the cubit is sort of like the English hand-which is the hand turned sideways, about 4″. Wouldn’t the cubit vary, depending on how big the person was? Arm, hand, didn’t have to worry about not having the proper measuring device with you!

Gotta go cut some grass. BBL

  22. Wookie of Chevy Chase
    10:44 am on June 17th, 2011

Stover. Rio has it right. And what Melanie and my dad and me were reminiscing about is a classic Bill Cosby comedy routine from the 1960s about supposed conversations between Noah and God in connection with the great flood and God directing Noah to build an ark. Probably one of the funniest comedy routines ever done.

Just segwayed into wondering if guys used any other body parts for measuring? Maybe we shoud ask Mr. Weiner.

Did anyone see the Today interview with the blonde southern gal, who worked for some Christian organization? She was talking about her ” Facebook affair” with Weiner, but didn’t really say much. Did she want her 15 seconds of fame, or what? Why do they always drag these bimbos out of the woodwork?

  25. Basil and Sage

Barb-you naughty girl…measuring with other body parts.
    Giggling…we love it.

We are being abandoned again. Staff and Mr.Staff are going to a wedding and the grandparents are going to be home alone for TWO DAYS! They are not afraid. They know that Abbie and I will take care of any problems that come up and keep any perps away.
Well, maybe Abbie will run away and hide and I will welcome them with joy, but I am sure either one of those will scare any perps away.

    Heh heh heh.

Oh and staff is taking the laptop with her so we will just have to wait, sniff, forever, sniff, until Sunday night.

Wookie: Thanks for the classic Cosby video. A funny way to start the day!

Barb&Maggie: The bacon dressing is very good. We have had it, but didn’t know how it was made – thank you.
Weiner has become a daily joke in the media and elsewhere. You are right – the 15 minuteters always want their moment in the spotlight and can only get it riding on the coattails of someone else.

Wolfie: Dawson’s idea is an excellent one. Donations around the holidays could be very generous. We are looking forward to a taste of your Wonderful Toffee. A lot of work for your mom though, as the orders will come in abundance.

    “They are too young.”

Good dog! Fur flying, drool oozing, not a pretty sight. Zoë has grounded the girls for the day, but she’s agreed that R,G and K are too young for Paris.

Herbs, It is not safe for you kats “out there”. You can go to Paris with the girls. I suppose in one of those cat carriers.

Bear, thanks for asking. It was a really nice trip. Even in a drought, that canyon is greener than I ever imagined it could be because of all the natural springs in it.
The air quality hasn’t been very bad here at all lately. It is just a haze in the sky, and more fires started burning yesterday in NM. One burned 7 homes to the ground, but it could have burned a whole neighborhood if they hadn’t of gotten the air tankers on it so quick.

I also think that many, many Plunderers are going to be upset if they don’t get to bid on the tastey treat. I like the photo Melanie did for you!

I had a rat-a-tooey made in my honor at the party, remember?

OK, Techniqually speaking Weiner didn’t commit a crime, but he still lied, and he still disrespeced his wife, and it’s still a little perverted. Maybe not horrifically perverted, but still not totally normal either.

Wolfie, If you do the toffee for the auction, why don’t you do several smaller boxes instead of one 7 lb. box? I think you wouod make more.

It is normal for a fledgling to hang around on the ground after they leave the nest. It is one of the most dangerous times for them. And one of the most dangerous things that can happen is for a 2 legged rescuer to ‘save’ them.
    Let it be.
The mother will be back occasionally to feed it, as she is doing for all her other fledglings. You can assist her that way, but right now the little guy needs to learn how to find food for himself. That is what Mom is doing. And that is why we have the phrase ‘kicked out of the nest”.

Greetings Plunderers. Brother Rio, sure am happy to hear that you are happy.
So – let’s talk about this camping trip. Now, I got nuthin’ against mountains – kind of fond of em, myself. But I would like to find some mountains that are around a real fine fishin hole. We can catch a big ole mess of catfish, and fry em up in the open air. Now that’s some good eatin’!

Redbone, there is trout in the mountain streams, but I’m sure I would like catfish.

Siber – y’all have never had catfish? Why son, thats just not right. Ain’t nothin like a nice, fat catfish fillet, rolled in cornmeal and fried in bacon fat. Tell you what – thats even better than bar-b-que, and I do like bar-b-que!

Yes Barb, that is why we are here. It should be fun. We already found one of Mr.Staffs cousins in the bar. (OH, we were there for dinner). (Yeah, that’s the ticket. For dinner.) Riiiiiight.

And now Redbone H. is making me hungry.

Redbone!…. Are you referring to SiberH’s “trip to the wilderness”…heh!….I’m all in for that except someone will have to kidnap me and hire a duplicate pug to replace me for a few days to fool the gals…snort!snort!….Can it be done?

Camping!… My little knapsack can hold waaaay more than you think it can. I can get a good sized fishing pole in there, folded up of course. A small tackle box and a six pack of cold beer-here!…heh!… My sleeping bag with all my baseball toys and a radio along with my little headphones so I can listen to the game while I am fishing…snort!…Slim Jims and my little Go Phone, just in case of bears…heh!

Mom has had catfish but I haven’t. I understand they have whiskers, and there are legands that 30 ft. man eating catfish live in the deep water beneath the dam in our largest lake. These are tales told around a campfire after a few beers.

Well thats just fine Rio, but why would bears want to make a phone call? Y’all think they would want to order a pizza?

Now – finding a duplicate pug – thats a mighty tall order son…or should I say a short order.

Rio: I saw a mylar balloon the other day, but not just any ol’ balloon. It was a pug balloon. Problem solved. As for staying warm, I’m sure WL will let you borrow his jacket, snuggled up withe howlers isn’t a bad idea. Also, I haven’t had time to read the attachment your friend sent to my SDD. I will check it when I get home tonight.

Mr. Redbone: I wanted to second your comment from yesterday. The Plunderers are a class all their own. They amaze me everyday with either kindness, the care for one another, their generosity, the humor found amongst those who plunder on, their talents and so many other reasons. I consider myself very fortunate.

He is associated with Pug Rescue of Colorado right now….snort!… His only problem is he tries to Dominate the Household…heh!…He needs an experienced owner who can put him in his place….sniff!…I think he would be perfect as my double…grunt!

Mr. Redbone, Just wanted to say the Barb loves catfish. It is one of her favorite fish. Didn’t think they had catfist out west in the Rockies. Mostly trout, which also is very good.

When Barb was a kid her family used to go fishing and camping in an area near Eagle, Co. at Sweetwater Lake. They used to catch mostly Rainbow and Brown Trout and cook them for dinner. Good memories.

When Barb’s daughter Kelly was little, she ordered “shush-doggies” to go with her fried fish.

    Night, all.

Boy, oh boy! It’s a good thing Mom doesn’t cuss, because I think both of my ears would be flopping if she let loose with the kind of tirade she seems to be holding in! That’s what happens when you don’t have any kind of pattern and you’re just winging it. Not to worry, though, I’m sure Mom will figure things out and we’ll be right back on track in no time! (I hope, I hope, I hope! Paws crossed!!!)

More auction news: a coworker who is a talented jewelry maker (and a follower of the kennel) asked if she could donate an item to the auction. I said yes! Her work is beautiful.

Come on Siber – can’t you convince those Howlers not to eat us if we come camping with you guys? Huh huh. Can we come? Pleeeeeeze? We promise not to pull Rio’s tail.
(whispering- if you don’t let us come we just might give old Mad Max the keys to Rio’s house while he is gone. giggle)
