Appearances
“You’re making a couple of summertime appearances?” Admin says.
“I am,” says Spence. “Thursday August 1 at noon I’ll be at the Wequassett Resort in Harwich Mass as part of an author lunch sponsored by Where the Sidewalk Ends, a great Chatham bookstore. Tuesday August 6 from 2-3 I’ll be at Eastham Town Hall (Mass.), sponsored by the Eastham Library and with books available from Where the Sidewalk Ends.”
“Wearing seersucker?”
“Probably not.”
Welcome Bro & Sissy.

Seersucker? Have a good time Spence.
Good morning all.
8:38 am on July 27th, 2013
Gooood morning, everyone! Mom has seersucker shorts. We missed soooo much yesterday ’cause mom tooook the ipaw and we didn’t see anything till after our bedtime š
Mm…have a super sparkly Saturday.
9:08 am on July 27th, 2013
The final frame on Woolfie’s video yesterday is supposed to be Rembrandt’s The Night Watch. That was clever. Charlie liked it because we saw the original painting on our travels. Now we are off to see the Royal Pavilion at Brighton, England.

HRH B: A little Indian (red-dot , not woo woo) influence? Going to see Mr. Singh for curried lamb too?
9:43 am on July 27th, 2013
Sharon: I don’t know much about architecture but the Pavilion is fascinating.
9:43 am on July 27th, 2013
Good morning all.
We remember when men wore seersucker suits in the summer, usually tan, blue or grey and white. We sorta liked the look back in the day.
Errands later this morning and then Barb is heading north to Lake Geneva for Kelly’s birthday, 43 today. They are going to the annual Lake Geneva Lobster Boil on the lake. The menu is similar to the Norwegian fish boil. Has anyone attended one of those? The food is cooked in large pots and includes corn, potatoes, onions and fish, or in this case, lobster tails. Melted butter poured over everything. Usually includes slaw and a desert. It is delish!
9:45 am on July 27th, 2013
B: Surely is. Love our “Travels with Charlie”. (Steinbeck be damned)
9:48 am on July 27th, 2013
Now I’m hungry for lobster….

I love the conservatories off the front (or back) of Monk’s House. I would love a conservatory. Do you think it can be made with very, very, thick glass to keep out our winters? I bet Snowhook would love one.
Seersucker?

Here is what OFA should wear if he is concerned about appearances.
Seersucker suit with a hint of Hawaiian shirt.
10:17 am on July 27th, 2013
HRH B: Sissinghurt is so Mary Stewart-like, Thank you.
Melanie: Let’s just forget seersucker! GAH. Oh, am fairly sure a goofey newfie put the water bowl under the bed.
10:47 am on July 27th, 2013
Rose!…Check your SDD…yawn!spit!
10:51 am on July 27th, 2013
Oops, thought it was Sunday and wondered what happened to Chetspeck. ‘Cause Tomorrow we go home, home, Home where the heart is.
Yes, B could write her own Travels With Charlie. Personally, the only thing thing that comes to mind from reading Steinbeck’s version is his innovative little “Washing Machine”.
Spence: Seersucker. NO.
10:52 am on July 27th, 2013
Chetspeck? Chetspeak.
11:25 am on July 27th, 2013
HOH, perhaps with all the bumps seersucker will clean up that water from the water bowl, plus the Newf drool, lickity spit. snicker
Need help. Saw these flowers on my walk.

Anyone know what they are?
The big flowers are tall. The small ones are about ten inches high and more of a dark purple.

RIO! Checked and responded.
11:52 am on July 27th, 2013
Mama Luna: thank you for trying your best to explain to Belle Starr that sometimes things aren’t always sparkly. I understand what it means to cry so hard your bark gets lost, mine did too last night.
It was a great moment in our lives to meet you, Belle, and all the rest of the Snowhook team. It was a greater honor to meet such lovely, wonderful people as your two-leggeds. I am ready to lose my bark again…..
Go Snowhook!
12:20 pm on July 27th, 2013
Pancho&Lefty: Youse guys rock! Thanks for trying to help Belle Starr with another letter. I was looking forward to wearing about 5 pairs of gloves so youse coul keep a pair as a souvenir .
12:48 pm on July 27th, 2013
First flower looks like a type of statice
1:29 pm on July 27th, 2013
2nd are Zinnias. If they are small, then they are the dwarf variety. They are annuals.
1:37 pm on July 27th, 2013
B&M: Thanks. Had a massive brain fart here. Couldn’t get the name but knew it.
Melanie: Have had a flock of “caw-caw” birds in the front for the past hour! One has a reddish “fleur” on his chest. Thought of you.
My butterfly bush is blooming like crazy! Both flutterbys and hummers are hanging around š
1:47 pm on July 27th, 2013
Thank you. Zinnas I have heard of, I need to look up statice.
Staff, tell Mr. Staff I was thinking of him today and his fireproof slippers.
Didn’t get as far as a fire with flame, but close. The infamous loft from which ZoĆ« took her plunge has not been visited since February. I needed to check to see if there was a leak where two roofs come together.
She turned the light on from the barn floor, and by the time I got up the stairs, through the closet, the light which had fallen off – face down on a plastic bag- was setting the bag and what was in it alight. A great deal of smoke and singeing.
Everything fine now. But, fireproof bunny slippers would have made it easier.
1:49 pm on July 27th, 2013
I just received my passport. It is brilliant!
Dawson: I’ll send the stamped envelope back to you at the return address on the envelope. (The stamp is of Mackinac Bridge.)
2:10 pm on July 27th, 2013
Our passport came today too!!! We just love it and can’t wait to start getting signatures in it. If Spence comes back to Murder by the Book in Houston for a signing this September, his will be the first signature we will get along with Chet’s paw print. Then in November, we will meet Barb (no Maggie, though) and Macy’s mom.
Then, everybody that is coming to the start of the great race up North in Alaska!
Mom just talked to Dad and they are going to take some time this weekend to make their reservations!
2:11 pm on July 27th, 2013
Will hike to mail box later this p m. (A loooong hike, have we mentoned?) Hope it is here but sometimes mail comes by mule train!
2:19 pm on July 27th, 2013
Mom is very upset with herself! She just checked the website for Murder by the Book and she missed David Rosenfelt! Her was there for a signing on his new Andy Carpenter book on the 24th! She better keep better track of their events so she doesn’t miss SQ!
2:43 pm on July 27th, 2013
Oh Lordy! Our passport was in the mailbox today! Mom is twirling! Hope she doesn’t splort! It is BEEEE-you-tiful! Wowser
2:50 pm on July 27th, 2013
B.Stover: I love the Mackinac Bridge Stamp.
Macy: As per your mom’s question last night. Yes, actually, I think all the postmarks from this post office will be the same but I will also get stamps and postmarks from all youse. Do you happen to have Redbone Hound’s address?
Wonderful that so CHobbit’s house in Anchorage is filling up for the Iditarod and the passports will be used at Spencer Quinn’s book signings.
I have to keep heaping praise on Turtleman because he did all this work even though I’m pretty sure he thinks we are all nuts!
The world is expanding.
From one phone call to ask about Adult Day Care for Dad, I get an envelope with 35 pages of forms, instructions and rules (at least 50 pages if you count both sides). Sigh. He’ll probably go once and say he doesn’t want to go back again. Gah!
Gingersnap cookies and Boston Clam Chowder made. I’m going to take a nap.
2:53 pm on July 27th, 2013
The passport is really nice. Hope the HOH didn’t give anyone the wrong idea.
2:54 pm on July 27th, 2013
A Pass Port Received And Twirling Twirled.
I opened up the plastic bag that caught fire. In it? The Plunderer Christmas Tree you guys sent to Zoe!
Thanks again! That thing didn’t go up in flames just singed two branches a bit. I cut those off and it is airing out for next year.
2:55 pm on July 27th, 2013
Dawson, you are one sneaky one!
3:03 pm on July 27th, 2013
Didn’t get our Passport yet. Hopefully on Monday.
Barb is dressed and getting ready to leave for the lake. She couldn’t understand why I started running around like a lunatic. She kept saying, Maggie, you don’t get to go. I was panting and running circles, then she realized that she had just put on tennis shoes. Tennis shoes mean I am going for a walk. Doesn’t she realize that!
I think she is shutting down the computer on me, so we will wish you all a nice Saturday afternoon and evening. Will be back for Chetspeak Sunday.
3:16 pm on July 27th, 2013
OK, Dawson, got it. Will send when brain reminds me to get off couch. I’ve been working at our church resale shop all day and the donations never stopped. When we left, it looked like we had done nothing. Oy vey, people, we are a classy joint, don’t bring us broken carp.
3:16 pm on July 27th, 2013
Postal!….Dawson, if only you had answered Macy’s question a lot earlier my friend would have known not to put the stamped letter my passport came in into the box for Staff..heh!…So you will not be getting a stamp from Colo….grunt!…You have my friends permission to open Staffs box when it arrives to get your letter out…heh!heh!…Who knows when Staff will be in MN again to collect her Boutique Item. We don’t….sniff!
3:17 pm on July 27th, 2013

3:20 pm on July 27th, 2013
Yes, C.Hobbit. I actually like a peaceful day or two. WHERE ARE THEY?
We are always very careful about fire – living in a 201 year old wooden house – this one took us by surprise.
I tried to tell my guys and gal as gently as possible.
SNORT! as a certain pug would say.

Barb!…*And here goes nothing!…snort!….A singular shoe will post but not two sho-es….heh!
4:14 pm on July 27th, 2013
We’ll one thing about our young Chinese guests; they surely know how to eat! For breakfast today, they ate a dozen scrambled eggs, 8 cups of fried potatoes, four pieces of fried chicken, a quart of orange juice and another quart of milk, plus some pastries. We are given $75 each for two weeks of groceries. I’m not sure we’ll do this again, because quite frankly, it is costing us a small fortune.
On the other hand, these two young men are darlings. They are with a program that flies into San Francisco, visits Stanford, and then come to stay with families for two weeks. On Friday, they fly to Washington DC, then Boston, and then will fly home from NYC. They will visit Columbia University, Harvard, and Yale.
4:45 pm on July 27th, 2013
Wolfie!…You were ripped off big time…snort! …Someone here says 150.00 does not buy a whole helluva lot of groceries….sniff!
4:50 pm on July 27th, 2013

My car broke down today, not far from Holiday Valley. It limped back here. Now it is on a flatbed on its way back to Amherst. If it had just waited until I moved into my apartment, it wouldn’t have an hour ride back to the dealer.
5:29 pm on July 27th, 2013
Redbone!….Brother you just keep filling those jars up….WooooHooo!
Mollys-Maw!…Oh boy. That does not sound like fun times in Holiday Valley…sniff!
5:30 pm on July 27th, 2013
Seersucker!….What the heck is a seersucker anyways?…sniff!
6:14 pm on July 27th, 2013
Seersucker is a striped and puckered cotton fabric usually in white and blue. I hate it.
6:15 pm on July 27th, 2013
Seersucker is a psychic vaccuum!
6:18 pm on July 27th, 2013
MollyPop’s Mom, the car probably enjoyed the ride.
6:21 pm on July 27th, 2013
Psychic!…That is one joke of yours I finally got…snort!
6:25 pm on July 27th, 2013
CHobbit!….If you are still around or show up later would you kindly check your SDD…sniff!
6:29 pm on July 27th, 2013
Just getting caught up here from Chevy Chase.
Our passport arrived today too. Thank you Dawson and Turtleman, what a terrific job.
As to seersucker, just one word — Matlock. He always wore seersucker.
For B and Charlie: Once in a prior life I had the privilege of attending a private dinner at the Rijksmuseum, and ate dinner sitting in front of The Night Watch. It was just spectacular.
Teddy update: He has now put of an additional week and is now nine weeks old and doing great, although mom and dad feel as though we’ve each aged about ten years. Honoring his name sake, he’s just about ready to take on San Juan Hill. Charge, Teddy, charge!
6:41 pm on July 27th, 2013
Teddy!….He is going to be an excellent Secret Agent once he learns to control his enthusiasm and his bowels…snort!
6:45 pm on July 27th, 2013
Charge!…That update on Teddy reminded me of an old Frank Capra movie we like to watch now and again called, “Old Lace and Arsenic”. Charge Teddy, Charge! …heh!heh!….What a great movie.
6:50 pm on July 27th, 2013
Maybe my car enjoyed the ride, but I was worried. How can Slippy’s Collision reassure that the car won’t SLIP right off the flatbed.
7:01 pm on July 27th, 2013
Dawson: My passport arrived today! Turtleman did a most excellent job! I love, love, love it! I hop I get a chance to use it soon!
7:03 pm on July 27th, 2013
Wookie’s Dad: Glad to hear that Teddy is doing well. More pictures please!
7:14 pm on July 27th, 2013
Rio: checked and responded.
Dawson: hope the passport comes on Monday. It am sure it takes a couple of days longer coming to the North Pole. I may have to stop in at Snowhook on the way to Anchorage on Wednesday and see if there is anyone around for my first signing!
7:16 pm on July 27th, 2013
Wow! Mom was right, it has been a super sparkly Saturday. More passports arrived, even those delivered by mule train! Yippie aye oooooh, cow patty! (Been dying to say that for days)
7:18 pm on July 27th, 2013
More!….How come she gets more passports?…sniff!…I only got ONE passport…grump!
7:20 pm on July 27th, 2013
Dawson!…How come I only got ONE passport and Sharon got more passports?….hmmmmm?
7:38 pm on July 27th, 2013
Rio, meant MORE in that more peeps got theirs. You got 1…I got 1…All dog’s chillins got 1.
7:46 pm on July 27th, 2013
Actually, this week in Holiday Valley was special. The Hunter’s Hope conference is here – began last Tuesday and they leave tomorrow. Hunter’s Hope was started by Jim Kelley after his son was diagnosed with Crabbe’s disease. A couple of days ago the children came in their wheelchairs with special help so they could go swimming in the pool. I cried. Last evening, they did the traditional helium balloon release. I sobbed.
7:49 pm on July 27th, 2013
Grunt!…The way you wrote your post made it sound exactly like more passports were delivered to you by mule train…snort!…Take a little time and be a bit more clear in your writing perhaps…sniff!… Or “???” confusion will reign again.
7:49 pm on July 27th, 2013
Avatar!…Gone?…grunt!
7:59 pm on July 27th, 2013
Thank you sugar doodles. I hated to tell the world where you hang out. I can’t have the ladies all flockin to your door.
8:06 pm on July 27th, 2013
Hey everyone. It was a very busy day here in show-land. We had perfect, blue sky weather, a nice crowd of people and good sales.
Only problem all day was trying to find dinner. There are no hotels near the show, so most people stay in a town about 15 miles away. There are numerous hotels here, but the only open restaurants are the fast food places that we really hate, an Outback and a 99, both with a 45 minute wait and pizza places. We finally lucked out and found a place that makes gourmet hamburgs, and next door was a frozen yogurt do-it-yourself sundae place. Yum! Peanut butter and chocolate yogurts with butterfingers crumbs and hot fudge. Good thing I have loose clothes for tomorrow.
8:15 pm on July 27th, 2013
T’s Mama you are so silly! A friend always said, “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first.”
8:33 pm on July 27th, 2013
After the adrenaline rush this afternoon, I am plumb tuckered out . .
Going upstairs to bed.
TTFN
8:34 pm on July 27th, 2013
Oh, and dog invented the caftan for comfort!
8:45 pm on July 27th, 2013
Would you look at that! 2 fashion statements in 1 day. First seersucker then the caftan!
8:49 pm on July 27th, 2013
Hmmm.
I thought about sending two passports to a few households but decided against it and now I’m glad I did because there would not have been enough to go around. I did send two to one household: AJ and Rebecca’s. By the way, no two passports are alike. Some have the 3 Huskies and some have a modern stylized running dog on the front. I had Turtleman stuff the envelopes and I addressed them.
Redbone Hound: Message received. Your passport is on its way.
8:57 pm on July 27th, 2013
Dawson, what a lot of work! Passport is even more special.
9:08 pm on July 27th, 2013
The Giant has returned. We love that guy. He loves us right back. He and our Lady have been busy running errands preparing for his week with us and her travel that begins tomorrow. She’ll be at the top of the world again for work.
HOH: We have out own take on that philosophy: Life is uncertain. Just eat dessert. Period.
G&BB and Rio: Please check your SDD.
Carol: You asked about our dog food. It is delish, but we don’t think that was your question. In the training and race season we go through a bag a day, plus meat, meat, meat, lard, fish and other supplements. More delish! Depending on our training schedule, time of year and temperatures we get fed more or are fed less. Truth be told, we wouldn’t say no to trying one of those gourmet burgers T&G’s mom had for dinner today.
Wose: Belle Starr’s cry are more of a muffled sob, so we think she’s making progress. We have all assured her that none of this means you don’t love her. Now, about which of us is better looking—we’re still waiting for an answer. š
9:15 pm on July 27th, 2013
Giant!…Has returned!….Woooooo!….Just in time for Rebecca to leave…sniff!…That stinks big time…grunt!
9:18 pm on July 27th, 2013
Big Shew!….Sounds to me like Golinka is having a really good season of shows so far…snort!…I remember some horror stories from last year. So it is good to hear that sales are high this time around…sniff!….Even if they have to starve all day long because there is no food available…grunt!
9:40 pm on July 27th, 2013
Wow. This dog looks like a cross between a lion and a bear…a Caucasian Mountain Dog:

9:43 pm on July 27th, 2013
Rio. oh ye of little faith Shows are a critter all of themselves. Food abounnds.
9:46 pm on July 27th, 2013
CHobbit: Oh my, that puppy is even bigger than Darah’s relatives.
9:47 pm on July 27th, 2013
Show-Food!…I thought Golinka had trouble finding food…sniff!…But I guess that was after she left the Really Big Shew and went to her hotel…heh!…Maybe tomorrow she can take food from the Show and eat it at the hotel..sniff!…That’s exactly what I would do. Fried Twinkies? Here I come!…yippp!
9:48 pm on July 27th, 2013
Oh my. That is a lot of (big, fluffy, adorable) dog!
Rio – yes, it has been a pretty good show season. We are supremely grateful for all the good wishes and the good luck. We have all paws crossed for another good day tomorrow.
Bella – glad the Giant is home safe and sound. Hope your flight to the top of the world is smooth and polar bear free.
9:54 pm on July 27th, 2013
Rain!… So it is really raining at the Rockies game right now….sniff!…It barely rained enough to make Beau smell like wet-dawg while he was on Neighbor-Watch earlier…heh!…I bet there will be a Rain Delay…grump!
9:55 pm on July 27th, 2013
Rio – at this show, there is only one (overpriced) food booth. We bring yogurt and fruit and munchies. But wouldn’t you think that in a town full of large chain hotels that there would be lots of restaurants? We saw at least four big restaurants that were closed down. Nothing but McD, Taco Hell. Not even a Kentucky Fried or Long Johns.
But that burger and yogurt were awfully good.
10:00 pm on July 27th, 2013
Golinka!…Yeah, but Sharon said Food Abounds at Shows, so I don’t see your problem…grunt!
10:01 pm on July 27th, 2013
T&G’s Mama: Nevef been to a shoooow like that. Glad ya’ll got food so no starvation.
10:02 pm on July 27th, 2013
Town!….Golinka, you are not hanging out in Detroit are you?…sniff!
10:05 pm on July 27th, 2013
Nope – this show is held on the grounds of a museum in Tiverton, Rhode Island. Pretty area, but no hotels unless you stay in Newport. And if we could afford Newport, we wouldn’t be doing shows.
10:05 pm on July 27th, 2013
Game!…There is a nekkid man in the front row of the Game sitting under an umbrella…heh!heh!…He is waiting it out apparently. They have not called a Rain Delay yet by golly…chuffle!
10:06 pm on July 27th, 2013
Newport!….Gotcha!…snort!….Someone here has been there and says its Money…heh!
10:13 pm on July 27th, 2013
Mom has never been to northeast but has been to most other states, someday will get there. Alaska is new too. Whoo hoo. She gets to do that in March š (How many pair of long underwear is needed for a southern gal?)
10:16 pm on July 27th, 2013
Sharon!…My guess is more than two…snort!
10:21 pm on July 27th, 2013
Sharon – we would guess that seersucker would not be a good choice for Alaska in March.
And now that we have come full circle on today’s subject, we are saying goodnight all. Sweet dreams.
10:22 pm on July 27th, 2013
Will sleep on that idea. Nighty night.
10:24 pm on July 27th, 2013
Full-Circle!…I like that idea…heh!…I mean coming full circle back to the subject of the initial post…sniff!…When there actually is a post with a subject that is. Although, the seersucker bit was introduced by Melanie, not Chet or Admin or Spencer…sniff!…I guess I have to think about this a little more…grunt!
10:26 pm on July 27th, 2013
Ahh-Ha!…The seersucker bit was introduced by Admin today…heh!heh!
10:53 pm on July 27th, 2013
I have to get up really really early tomorrow morning because a birder is coming to look at the Say’s Phoebe. The little ones got out of the nest this afternoon but got back in again. Hopefully they will still be around when this birder guy shows up around 6 a.m.! YIKES.
I may or may not be up. I will try.

Here is one of the babies out of the nest. He/she doesn’t look really happy. As far as I could tell they were not out longer than about an hour. (I was napping for part of it so don’t relly know)
It has been perfect napping weather here. Highs in the mid 70’s and overnight down to the mid 40’s.
Nighty noodle youse guys….
11:04 pm on July 27th, 2013
Nest!… Staff, my friend and I have missed two sets of sparrow little ones leaving the nest this Spring-Summer so farā¦grunt!….
