Good morning, everyone! Bah. Electric collars our paws 🙁 WE think like mom says: What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Perhaps if 2 leggers wore-collars too, they would be kinder and gentler over all! Heading for the library in a half hour.
    Have a terrific, non-tumultuous Tuesday.

Nothing to think about. Shock collars are inhumane!

Unless we are putting one on Michael Vick. Or Putin. Or a few other bad guys.

Good morning all. Go vote in your primary.

Good morning all. We also do not approve of training with shock collars. Not exactly positive reinforcement. I do think the use of them with underground fencing is different. If you live in an area where you cannot have a regular fence, then I think the e-collar use is better than having your dog run away or get killed by a passing car. Never for other uses like bark control.

Today Barb and her boss and his wife are going out to lunch to celebrate John’s b-day 9/6 and Barb’s which is Friday. They never go out to lunch, so this is a first. Going to try an Italian restaurant in the old downtown area of Crystal Lake.

    Have a great day everyone.

I just can’t wait for Apple’s big announcement today. I have been waiting for a larger phone and rumor had it that today would only be one a bit larger. Then the last few days the rumor mill has heated up with news of also a 5.5 inch phone. That’s what I need – a waffle phone.

I think the collars should be banned.

    Shock collars? No!

I’m up because I forgot to re-cover the squash plants last night so I am checking the temperature. It is just zero so they are probably good. Back to bed. ZZZzzzzz

We really think the “advanced behavior modification techniques” would be better served on some bad owners.

Also, from Alaska, a cute postcard from Rio and Masquers and c.hobbit. Beavis the dog at Ruby in 2010. Thanks guys!

I am trying to choose cabinet hardware! AUGHHHH!

Shocked!….Awwwwww now this reminds me of an album my friend and I love and have not listened to in many many moons….sniff!…”Short Sharp Shocked” by Michelle Shocked…chuffle!…There is a song on this album called, “Anchorage”. The song is about the narrator taking time out to write to an old friend, who has moved from Texas to Anchorage, and her friend’s reply. She tells Chel that her husband “says send a picture, hello and to keep on rocking”….snort!…I love that song…WoooooOOOOOooooo!

Hello All–Absolutely agree about shock collars. should be illegal (although I might make an exception should Tupper’s Mama’s proposal become widely accepted).
First week of school is over and I’m wondering if I’ll make it through–so many quasi-zombie faces staring silently at me in the MW class…oh well, time to feed the kids and take Pretty to be wonderfluffed (I LOVE that term!).
Have a wonderful and safe day, all. Early Happy Bday to Barb (eat some dessert for me).

One more thing–I don’t know if I mentioned this before, but while we wait for the next C and B to come out, I have been reading other things and would like to recommend Graeme Simsion’s The Rosie Project. Pretty cute until the end when it devolves into romantic comedy, but charming in it’s own way.

Hi everyone. Have kind of been out of contact recently because we had a mini-vacation last week in Western Maryland on account of it being my mom’s birthday, but we are back now. Also, me and Zeta have done some really neat hikes together on something called the Seneca Ridge Trail. The most amazing thing though was last Saturday, when it was so, so very hot here that my gal Zeta, who I can coax to step into the water a bit, actually went swimming with me. How cool is that? I even have a video of it (SiberH — you might want to avert your eyes on this). I have some other photos as well that I will try to post later of our adventures together.

Morning! Thanks for the reminder about Chuckles the Clown’s funeral. Now Mom says: if Mary did it, she was not so bad.
Mom is a big proponent of invisible fence. If it were up to her, all dogs would have it. We agree. We know our boundary well, so we are safe. We never have to get shocked, once we learn it. To learn, most dogs only get one shock. We are huskies, so we had to make sure what was what. But training must be used. Mom has trained many many dogs on i.f. In fact, she even worked part-time selling/estimating/advising prospective buyers.
We get to run run run all over this here farm. We have a neighbor who keeps her dog tied, and another who keeps her dog in an outdooor kennel. Now, those are cruel.
Mom hates that first day of training, although she has tested the shock on herself many times. Her motto: “one tiny shock annoys for one tiny second. A car kills forever.”

HOH: Interestingly to me, I also thought it was 10,000 hats but I googled it to try to get a picture of a hat and it came back 500 hats.
I would not intentionally send frost and snow to my sister, unless it was the one in Montana and she was going skiing. We have one more night of below freezing temperatures then it is supposed to warm up to the 50’s. I was hoping for warmer than 50’s but…I am very happy with our summer because we had rain that kept everything green but not so much rain that it caused problems.

  43. Herd of Hounds,

BTW, in the 60’s when mom was in High school, she could read any Russian or translated European novels she wanted, BUT to read Steinbeck’s “Travels with Charley” she had to have parental approval. Does this make sense to anyone? It still doesn’t to her.

  60. Tupper's Mama
    3:26 pm on September 9th, 2014

Howlers – we don’t think I.F. training is the same as using s shock collar for so-called training. Especially since most (non-Husky) dogs only need one “experience” to know the deal.
But we also know that the meanest thing your mom would ever do to you would be to not pet you when you think you need petting.

Well, the polls were as slow as we thought they would be. We only had 91 voters in the morning.
And most of them didn’t even know what was on the ballot – they thought this was the gubernatorial election, and yelled at us because it was the primary. sheesh!

And, Barb – we are posting this while we are sitting on hold with Comcast. We feel your pain.

BooBear – love the hummers. Love it. What a cheerful video.

Funny, the Nexxus tablet wouldn’t download the video, but it played on the iPhone with no hitch.

OK, all you techies out there – we need tutoring. We are going to the beach next week. There is no internet at the cottage. If we do a search for an internet connection there are a number of neighbors who have internet. The iPhone works, but the computer won’t connect to internet. Is this what you buy a hot spot for? Or what is it we need to get to be able to stream our Netflix movies, and stay a little bit connected?

  84. Herd of Hounds,
    7:24 pm on September 9th, 2014

T&G, mom is an idiot and cannot help.
On the subject of hummers, though, west of the continental divide ther are 6 or 8 species that are as funny as fun can be with various chin/cheek colors and as pushy or pushier than BooBears. We kinds miss that.

    T&G,

The iPhone works because it has Wi-Fi when Wi-Fi is available and always has cell phone service.

I hope that your neighbors who have Internet service have it locked. Not that they want to be mean and not let anyone else hop on, but it’s dangerous with passwords.

You need a hotspot for the computer.

  89. Mollypop's Mom
    7:53 pm on September 9th, 2014

I need to say that when the iPhone does not have Wi-Fi available, it uses the cell phone service to access the Internet.

  90. BooBear
    8:04 pm on September 9th, 2014

Royals, does your Mom or Dad have an iPad? The iPad can be linked to the iPhone for about $9.00 a month and will use the phone’s service. Mom has a hot spot linked to her AT&T account but it runs $50.00/month (I think). She will probably drop that since she now is a single income person.

The hummers stay here all summer but not in the numbers they are right now. In the spring and fall, we have the regular hummers who stay all summer and those migrating south. This is just the beginning of the feeding frenzy. In a couple of weeks, we will have what looks like a bee hive around each feeder. They are no longer interested in chasing the others off, only eating. Mom will try to get a video as the numbers increase. We have an oak tree right off the back porch that they will fly off and perch in. You can literally see the tree vibrate. Then one morning, most will just be gone. We do have a few that stay year round.

  91. Tupper and Gilly
    8:05 pm on September 9th, 2014

MPM – yup, the neighbors are all locked; I only know they have service because their connections are nicknamed with their name or address. And not being a hacker, I can’t access.

Who do I buy hotspot from? Staples? My phone service? Amazon?

  92. Masquers
    8:05 pm on September 9th, 2014

Wondering what that is like…always having cell phone service…we can only dream.

  93. BooBear
    8:09 pm on September 9th, 2014

A couple of years ago, a lady from a local bird group came in the winter and trapped one of our year round hummers and banded his little leg. Our neighbor has alot of flowers in his yard, but doesn’t get many birds. That’s because they are over here eating at the “fast food” place!

  94. Mollypop's Mom

You can link to the hotspot on an iPhone like BooBear does with the iPad. You can check with your iPhone service but you may not be able to get a hotspot for a short time since it may have to be part of your contract.

Your iPhone can do everything that you need but it has that darn small screen. That’s why I wanted a waffle phone.

Royals, ours is from our phone service. Maybe someplace like Wallyworld can sell one for the short term.

Can you download the Netflix movies to your PC before you leave home. Then you can just watch them on the PC without needing an Internet connection.

MPM – obviously, you have us confused with someone who is computer literate.
CAN we download Netflix streaming to be stored on the PC? We have no ides how. But we also will be gone to the beach for a while – not sure how many hours of movies would be good to store. ( there are 3 channels at the beach and only two of those are major networks. We don’t live for TV up there, but it is nice to have something to watch on a rainy day, or at night)

I just checked and Netflix doesn’t allow downloading and saving the picture. My next suggestion is to rent CDs or DVDs.

MPM – we usually drag the CD/DVD player up here with us, but there isn’t anywhere close to rent. No Redbox in the town we are in, and trying to avoid going to ” town” every day. It takes too much time away from the Storyteller’s lobster eating time.
We will check Staples and Wally tomorrow for hot spot.

BooBear, when we were still in CA had hummers most of the year and several species 🙂 Here in east TN we feel lucky to get ruby throated. Heck, having trouble getting oriels 🙁
Take as many fotos as you can of your hummers and revel in them.

The ‘rents just got home. They were at a Pawlitics Happy Hour hosted by PA Humane. Mom won the door prize, which included yummy looking can food, bowls, and toys!!! There was also a bed, in size T.C. Mom gave it to her friend who has a small dog.
BooBear, we LOVE your video. We here are hummingbird lovers. Oh yes we are. And we are happy if we have just one or two. Your place looks like heaven. Where do you get your feeders? They look much nicer than ours.
T&G, Mom used to use her iPhone as a hotspot for her iPad. It was expensive, but she can turn it back on for one month at a time. BooBear, where do you get that $9 deal?

We just got an alert about a poor dog in TN. who is 15 and was turned in to a shelter because her folks could no longer care for her. This kind of thing just breaks my heart. What is wrong with people, and how much longer would they need to care for this poor old trusting friend. She just looks so sad and doesn’t understand and it makes me cry.

Key-Words!…”..could no longer take care of her.”…snuffle!…Maybe they themselves are down and out and can no longer take good care of her…wuffle!…Maybe they can no longer afford to feed the poor thing and themselves. Have you seen the prices at the grocery stores lately asks my friend?…sniff!…This country has a lot of people living below the poverty level. If they can no longer take care of a pet, that is a very sad thing, but a good thing if they take them to a shelter…sniffle!sob!

BooBear: The hummingbird video is wonderful! I’ve only ever seen one or two at a time and none in the 20 years I’ve lived up here.

    Barb&Maggie: That is so sad!

Hummers…Staff is all worrit about her hummers. She has had quite a few here the last 2 weeks. (Quite a few is 5 at a time) Today she has 3 but it was 45 degrees this morning and they were at the feeder constantly trying to stay alive.

Mr.Staff was making new nectar as she went off to the quilt store to play. She told him he had to make sure there was plenty so in the morning there was nectar ready as soon as it got light. He did. They are topped up.

BooBear how many feeders do you have? We only have 2.

Great hummers Boo. We got in the middle of one of those feeding frenzies in Colorado one year. Those little buggars are fierce!

Mom got sprung from rehab today. F-i-l is going in to one tomorrow. Things are starting to mellow out a bit now.

Glad to see some validation about the font change. To be clear, it is only in the comment section.

I am going to put Belle out for the recycling truck on Thursday. She has bitten me two days in a row now. I have no idea what her problem is.

    Hello All,

With the tourism season winding down and the training season just getting underway I thought I would take a minute and say thank you to Rebecca. Why you might ask? While I was away working this summer Rebecca worked day in and day out to take care of the dogs, raise the pups and do the not so glamorous work of keeping Snowhook Kennel going. I couldn’t run Iditarod without her.

With love for a beautiful wife…
