Answering A Reader Question

Yesterday mlaiuppa wrote this re the Proust and Chet post: “Would like to hear from Spencer if he had Proust in mind, even on a subliminal level, when he wrote that passage.”

Answer: Yes, I did, and quite consciously. A good question and thanks for asking. Any other reader questions out there?

Regarding comments about Proust yesterday, compare James Joyce’s “Ulysses” the last “sentence” of which is 45 pages long. (It’s the stream-of-consciousness of one character, Molly Bloom.)

    Good day to all.

WTAFP and Mlaiuppa: Thanks for the permission slip from bible study. We are in the middle of the begats. They have yet to get to us, but we suspect we will be mentioned later on in that big book.

Peter, today’s photo isn’t familiar. Where and when was it taken?
    Do you remember?

    Greetings!

HRH,B: 45 pages for one sentence…Yikes! That is a book that I will never read.

HOH: Great question! It kind of looks like one of the small side alley streets in Boston.

    Good afternoon to all!

    B. Stover: Are these authors having some sort of contest to see who can write the longest sentence? 45 pages? Seriously? Another book to avoid. Sorry but I don’t consider that classic, I consider that hubris.

HOH: If I was Spencer, I would have posed for a special photo in my office with my left hand on my chin, just like Proust and used that one. Well, maybe a bit too over the top.

Mlaiuppa: Stream-of-consciousness writing is a technique used by “modernist” writers to express the thoughts and feelings of a narrator. It can be very realistic. Virginia Woolf (my favorite author) and William Faulkner used it also. James Joyce just went a step further and chose not to use punctuation in his final chapter of “Ulysses.”

No punctuation either? Oh, that is the height of showing off.

Sorry, I don’t consider any of that modernist stuff true literature. I go straight from Jane Austen to Chet and Bernie.

People were always shocked that I, as a librarian, didn’t major in English literature. I read to enjoy and relax, not suffer or analyze. I do belong to a book club so I do read a goodly number of thought-provoking books (at least 12 a year and sometimes more).

Today Alaska gained 2 minutes and 59 seconds of daylight. I will take it!

Hobbit: Reading to enjoy and relax…the best reasons!

Question for the blog: I keep a notebook listing the number of books I read every year. This year, I read 46 books. I was wondering how many books a year some of youse of this here blog read in a year.

I have a MLIS but also was not an English major. Nor was that my first masters.

I’m retired so I only read for pleasure. Non-fiction as well as fiction but if I’m not enjoying it I stop and find something else.

I’m currently reading Dog Days by Andrew Cotter. (Still waiting for the audio book.) After that I have some books on the Iditarod, Leonard Seppala and Huskies. I’ve also got all those David Rosenfelt books. I’ve also got some kindle books like Hail Mary. Been avoiding them because I like print so much more than digital.

No, I don’t keep a journal of the books I read, that would be too much like work. But I do keep a database of the books I own. I have over 1500 but haven’t kept it up to date. I’ll have to as I will be selling some as part of my downsizing.
