Another Ridiculously (But Slightly Less) Sneak Peek: The Dog Who Knew Too Much

“Tell you the truth, Bern,” Georgie began, and I missed some of what came next, on account of: Bern. Bernie hated that! In fact, the last guy who’d tried it, a carjacker from the East Valley, name escaping me at the moment, was now breaking rocks in the hot sun. Were we about to take down Georgie Malhouf? His mustache was really starting to bother me.

“ … whole chain’s a client,” Georgie was saying, “including The Arbuckle Palace in L.A. Check out the world around us. Security – my kind – is only going to get bigger.”

“What’s the other kind?” Bernie said.

Georgie made a motion with his hand, like he was waving away flying insects, although there were none around. I always know when insects are around: they’re very noisy. Birds are much quieter when they fly, kind of crazy.

“The other kind,” Georgie said, “is the lone wolf.” He leaned forward, wagged his finger at Bernie. “Headed for rapid extinction, Bernie.” Sometimes things go by so fast you can’t keep up. For example, Georgie’s wagging finger had curly black hair on the back, always interesting, but there was no time to dwell on it, not if wolves were suddenly in the picture. I knew wolves, but only from Animal Planet. I glanced around the bar: no wolves, no creatures of any kind, except humans and me. But the fur on my neck was up and stiff.

“I’m offering you a job,” Georgie said. He looked over at me. “You and Chet, of course.”

Gosh we have been busy! Sam has been very demanding too. She wants Mom’s attention all day long. Sam is sleeping on Mom’s lap right now.

Wookie and Melanie – What’s going on with the storm? MSNBC is showing it a lot but I can’t tell exactly where it is.

We had a dusting of snow here in Buffalo and that made everything pretty and white. It was getting dingy looking.

Here is an address that you can check out to find some info on boxing day. I could have sent this to you on your blog, but thought others might be curious after you posed the question. We live in a resort town about 40 miles from the Canadian border, and boxing day is big here.

C&B4!….Hey! Even though our Mission was a failure, we still get a sneak peek at the next book!…Woooo!…I wonder if this scene is at the beginning of the book when Bernie is at the PI Conference….hmmm!… We know they wind up at a Wilderness Retreat, or Ranch at some point….grunt!…But Bernie working for Georgie Malhouf?….snort!… I can’t picture that…sniff!

Boxing!…It seems like Boxing Day around here because she is in a Throw Everything Away mode….snort!… I’m sitting on my bowels in case she tries to throw them out too…grunt!… Whatever is left is being boxed up and stored downstairs…sniff!…She is tired of the Christmas clutter I guess or maybe just tired of the holidays altogether….snorkel!

Staff got a book for Christmas. She was not so excited about it. It is Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs. However she should have known better than to doubt Dave Barry. He has her exact sense of humor and she has been laughing and reading it to Mr Staff (who already read it and was just passing it on). He is humoring her.
Mr Staff says that she is a better age for the book. He is from the folk singers time and she is from the 60’s.

I am not sure just how one does sit on one’s bowels! One time at the Big Orange Box someone made a sign that was up for at least a month before mom noticed it. “New..tank and bowels in one” especially funny considering it was describing toilets.

I noticed that too Macy. But figured he would adjust that soon. Unless he is too busy laying on the beach in the sun.

I sure hope that Spence hadn’t planned on coming home today. I expect the airports around home will be rather quiet. Noaa.gov says 10 to 14 inches are expected tonight in the Boston area.

The Vikings (not that I care) are having another game delay. They are scheduled to play in Philadelphia. Too bad. (NOT)

Mollypop — we’re dodging a bullet here, probably only 1-2 inches, but I think in Melanie and Spence-land they will be hit a lot worse. The weather forecasts here over the past two days have been a lot like a roller-coaster ride — up and down, up and down. One of the guys responsible for snow removal in the area was on the tv this morning and said the biggest problem he had was that the forecast had changed about 75 times since they started tracking the storm. BTW, have you figured out how to fix the software glitch on the quilt cameras. I’m stuck, because we are still trying to sort upgrading my dad’s computer’s operating system to get the IPAD to work.

Rio — just one word of advise, whatever you are sitting on, sit carefully.

Bernie is a “Lone Wolf” except for Chet!
    I don’t like that Georgie.

Glad you’re sitting in your bowls, Riö. I was wondering what you thought she was going to throw out.

    I like Wöökie’s advice.

OTAS and F are driving through this stuff to get here. They tried to leave early, but everyone was out trying to top off their gas tanks. They just needed to fill up to get here!

YSAS is telling SO to wait. That is okay to wait. We just want her safe.

Zoë took the whole Pack up to the camp this morning. It will be the last time until the snow melts, unless someone plows that drive. They had a great time. Today was Running Day instead of Boxing Day.

Which makes more sense when it comes to the Nation Within, I guess Boxing Day could be for kangaroos. LizF?

We’ve got lots of gas for the generator. The cars are full. The snow blower is ready. A sign that we probably won’t get any snow at all.

  22. B.Stover
    12:58 pm on December 26th, 2010

Rio: I have come up with a brilliant idea. Heh!

I think that you should write a graphic novel about the missions. Sometimes graphic novels are done as a collaboration: one doing the writing and one doing the art. They are popular with people in their 20s and 30s and I think they will continue to grow in popularity.

A few semesters ago I taught Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman. The students (and I had an assortment–from 20-year-olds to 40 somethings) were very responsive. And they learned not only the history of the holocaust but also the psychological effects on the survivors of two generations.

I can just see the pictures and dialog of Kirby, Wookie and the Cahors Black, or of me with Melanie’s cane. What do you think?

Graphic novels are not really comic books although the artwork can be similar. Graphic novels are bound as are books, they are usually longer than comics and have one continuing story as a novel does.

Where can we find someone to do the artwork?

Rio, your coat is glossy and beautiful and there is a cute green ribbon on your tail.

Stover and TYB, I have wondered about Boxing Day myself. I could never figure out what they do on Boxing Day. If food is involved, I’m in. I’m already a dual citizen of the U.S.A. and Canada.

  29. B.Stover
    2:41 pm on December 26th, 2010

Rio: I could check with one of our architecture profs and have him recommend a student who could do the artwork. The story would have to be written first anyway, with notes to the artist about your vision for the art. You’d also have to keep in mind that you would have an extended audience. I mean, your audience would include people not familiar with the blog. For example, that audience would not understand the significance of the Cahors bottle being (WASTED!!!!), no I mean spilled in that way. You’d have to develop the story more, give more background. I would be your editor if you wanted me to be.

B, you cook dumplings in broth, you cook pasta in broth. Why not matzo balls? There are lots of times dough is cooked in liquid if you just think about it for a minute. (I had to think about it for about 5)

Abbie: Pasta is not dough since I’ve never made it and only buy it in bags. It’s hard. I’ve also never made dumplings.

I want to know what schmaltz is and where do I buy it? I have nine matzo balls left and I’ve fozen most of them. They sure are filling. The box I used had two packages of flour mixture so I still have one package left. How else does one eat matzo balls besides in soup?

  71. Debbie LM
    7:27 pm on December 26th, 2010

Schmaltz is rendered chicken fat. No, you do not consume it every day if you want your heart to keep beating BUT… in things like matzah balls and chopped chicken livers (the real thing) they are ESSENTIAL. Hint- buy the chicken fat already rendered – frozen. Rendering it yourself is very smelly business. But ummmm the unctuous mouth feel (in a great context not just oily) is beyond compare. Try it, you’ll like it as they say!
also all good matzah balls puff up like that so you did well on a first try.

Debbie: I’ve never made latkes. I’ve had them in restaurants and they are delicious. (Is Oy Gevald the same as Oy vay…I don’t know how to spell it.) I also looked up schmaltz and…sorry…I just wouldn’t be able to use that. (However, anytime you want to make matzah balls with it, I would gladly eat them.) In the article I read on schmaltz it said that Eastern European Jews used it because they were forbidden by kashrut from using butter or lard and that they could not obtain olive oil. I think that worked quite well because they had a nice flavor. I added a bit of salt even though the recipe did not call for it.

Rio: I never really “got into” the East Enders even though it is regularly on the Canadian station we have here. Enjoy.

Sam seems to love chocolate…and who can blame her.

I’m watching The Blind Side on HBO. I think Sandra Bullock won the academy award for best actress. (Didn’t she?) And what is the first scene? A blasted football game.

I want to be Billy’s girl
I want to be Billy’s girl
That’s the only thing I want to be
I want to be Billy’s girl
‘Cause if I was Billy’s girl
What a happy (stupid) girl I’d be

It’s a deal B. But I guarantee you’re missing a real taste treat. Rio latkes are heavenly grated potatoes, a little onion and matzo meal and egg fried very crisply and served hot. The real key is a lot of verbal angst on the part of the cook LOL

Latkes can be served with applesauce but my favorite is sour cream. (Sorry Staff.) And the secret it seems to me is the crispness. (I used to have a friend who made them.)

Mollypop: All I can say is wow!

Rio. Your Broncos actually won today. The rookie quarterback (Tebow) had a really good game.

Poor Stover. If the first scene in The Blind Side was disturbing because it was about football, she is in for a long night, I think, because the movie is about football, although it is about other stuff too. Great movie though, and Sandra Bullock is just terrific.

That **** YSAS is a **** good lookin’ guy. Trying to picture all the **** language coming out of his **** mouth. Guess he kisses his GF with that **** mouth, huh?

Mom is watching Sound of Music. She breaks into schmaltzy song with no warning. However, the laundry is being done, some muttering about clean socks and underwear, clothes are ready for work.

Clothes!: She has been shopping like she hasn’t shopped in the past two years for “appropriate business attire.” Heh! I just need my red collar with my name embroidered on it, Jasper, pure and simple, and I’m good to go anywhere. No bow ties or butt ties necessary for me!

There she goes again…”The hiiiilllllzzzzz are aliiiiiiiivvvveeee…

Obviously you guys didn’t get enough to eat yesterday . . .

but joining the food frenzy, OTAS and F brought dinner.

Over the river and through the snow
To our great house they came.
They passed a lot of accidents
but stayed out of the fray, hey!

Anyhoo, Sauce, cut up turkey sausage sauteed in onion and garlic. Various seasonings, tomatoes cooked for awhile. Drain the grease and put over rice noodles. Yum. Best thing? I didn’t cook it. Having left overs of everything from the last two nights for tomorrow.

Jasper, I will ask him tomorrow. He told me I had to go to bed because I had done too much. Of course, he and OTAS were just out shoveling trying to keep a head of the snow. Don’t think that’s going to be possible.

Now the reports say 8 more inches on the way (we’ve already had 7) and lasting through Monday evening. Don’t think YSAS’ SO will be here tomorrow. Probably on Tuesday.

Light snow so that’s good. I did notice on the radar that the Cape is getting snow then rain then snow then rain. Yuck. Poor Audrey.

The Pack have become Landseers. They go out and come back in coated in white. At least the house won’t need the humidifiers going.

Patsy just came in and got on the bed. She’s wet, but I’m smart. I have an old car blanket from the 30’s or 40’s on the bed. Nothing gets through that.

We watched “Big Night” with Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub. Very good. Lot of the same people that were in one of my favorites “The Impostors”.

“Big Night” is instant on Netflix.
