And Now It Begins: Iditarod 2013 – Go Snowhook!
“Yesterday being only the ceremonial start,” Spence says.
“Good thing,” says Admin, “since although I was right there in front of the screen I must have blinked at a key moment.”
“For newcomers to the blog, our team is Snowhook – “
“Musher Justin, also known as AJ, CEO Rebecca – “
” – and Rose, Plunderer extraordinaire is on the scene, with Prof, her husband. Here’s a report from her.”
Alaska is awesome. Everyone should see Alaska and the Iditarod at least once in their lives! The people are very friendly. Yesterday [Friday], AJ, Rebecca, and handler Nick, took the Prof and I out on the trail. It was absolutely the most thrilling thing we will ever do in our lives. Prof and I even mushed our teams. There is nothing more exciting than being out on the trail, with a lovely snowfall!
Rebecca and AJ are the nicest people, most genuine people we have ever met. We are honored to meet them, and very lucky to be a part of the 2013 Iditarod!
“Plus,” says Spence, “Rebecca, despite how busy she must be, found time to get in touch:”
Our Ceremonial start was uneventful as far as our time on the trail, yet we had some highlights as well as low lights. Does Rose, Plunder Extraordinaire, giving Rio Jr. a pep talk count as a highlight? In my opinion, yes. I was also given some ‘cheesecake’ money by a fan of the kennel—that’s at least two highlights if Chet is counting.
“And here is a shot of the pep talk. Plus Prof, Rose, Rebecca, and AJ at the Mushers Banquet.”
“How proud are we to see the Chet patch?”
“Couldn’t be prouder.”
Welcome Hoover.
GO SNOWHOOK!

I am happy to report that all the dog jackets that the team will use on the trail are complete as of about five minutes ago. Some were repair jobs thanks to Pancho and Lefty’s handywork, and for the jackets that couldn’t be repaired—another hat tip to the thieves—my lady made jackets from scratch.
Now, she says she must make sure AJ has a special playlist on his ipaw!

Happy Egg Day, All! Great writeup from Spence, Admin, Rose, and Rebecca!
And now it begins…
8:03 am on March 3rd, 2013
W-L, Send your lady to bed!
8:44 am on March 3rd, 2013
Today is the day! We are so excited here and can’t wait for the real race to begin. Another great post from Spence and Admin to get things going.
8:45 am on March 3rd, 2013
Whoa! We went to bed far too early last might and missed some good stuff(ed potatoes). Yesterday was a mish mash(ed potatoes)of sights and emotions. The pictures show some beeeutiful country(fried potoatoes). T&G, as usual, your mom’s prayer was elegant (no joke). Go Snowhook!
9:06 am on March 3rd, 2013
Thank you for the great reports and pictures Spence.
Go Snowhook!
Good morning all.
9:19 am on March 3rd, 2013
Good Morning all!
Great writing, Spencer.
Wonderful pictures.
Good reporting Rose and Coach W-L.
I have just awaken! Unbelievable . .
9:29 am on March 3rd, 2013
Wow, they clean up quite nicely, don’t they? We couldn’t be prouder!
And I am relieved that nary a moose head was visible on their plates!
9:31 am on March 3rd, 2013
Great report and pictures. Today is the big day.
We also crashed early last night, so will go back and catch up (ketchup to go with HOH’s potatoes!)
9:33 am on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie is making me laugh.
9:38 am on March 3rd, 2013
Good morning all.
Wolfie – they are all handsome and while nary a moose head, did you notice Rebecca is the only one with dessert? Possibly layered cheesecake? 🙂
Rio Jr. wuvs Wose. That picture is ab-fab.
9:39 am on March 3rd, 2013
My avatar has mysteriously disappeared because my email address has mysteriously acquired an “x”. I have tried correcting it to no avail. Any suggestions from the techies?
9:43 am on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie, We don’t understand the part about not being able to correct your email address. What happens if you delete it and retype?
9:54 am on March 3rd, 2013

9:56 am on March 3rd, 2013
Hey, here I am! And looking mighty fine, if I do say so myself!
10:01 am on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie, Thank goodness you found your Avatar.
10:02 am on March 3rd, 2013
Staff says the picture of Rose in her Snowhook Stormy Kromer hat with Rio Jr (and his eyebrows)is her very favorite one. Now I have to go back and look at Rebecca’s dessert.
Too Exciting! Yes ‘we’ are starting the race TODAY!
10:13 am on March 3rd, 2013
Staff couldn’t resist. Hope Wose and Rio Jr. don’t mind…

It is the last one in the second row…
10:18 am on March 3rd, 2013
I’m glad that Bella got her cheesecake while the getting was good. On her facebookie, she reported that she sacrificed her cheesecake windfall to purchase parts for the ailing dog truck.
10:20 am on March 3rd, 2013
Barb calls those light spots above my eyes “Doodlebugs” instead of eyebrows.
Rose is wearing a neck warmer that was probably made by Rebecca. Right?
Go Snowhook!
10:24 am on March 3rd, 2013
Welcome back to Wolfie’s avatar. Good to see you!
10:24 am on March 3rd, 2013
Great write-ups & Photos by Spence and Admin and our Plunderer Extraordinaire Wose.
Barb&Magpie and Hounds: Ketchup & Taters. LOL
What a day it was Yesterday! What a Day it will be Today!!
GO SNOWHOOK!!!
10:31 am on March 3rd, 2013
“Ab-fab”? Sigh…
10:33 am on March 3rd, 2013
Yes, today! Go Snowhook!
10:41 am on March 3rd, 2013
Snicker, We only do it to annoy dear BStover. 😉
10:41 am on March 3rd, 2013
We did the Wose and Junior puzzle! Ab-fab! Sorry B.
10:41 am on March 3rd, 2013
Another great post by Spence to start the day. Thank you for the photos. Junior made the front page of Chet’s blog!!
I am so ready to start watching the green flags move across Alaska.
10:43 am on March 3rd, 2013
Come on B…let your hair down…split an infinitive…double negative…make a rhyming poem…you might find that it is AB-Fab
10:54 am on March 3rd, 2013
There is a new video up on the Iditarod website telling what is new with the GPS Tracker. I never thought I’d be saying this, but I love the improvements they have made to the Tracker. (if they work)
10:57 am on March 3rd, 2013
Fellow Insiders, be sure to keep posting on AJ’s page on the Root For Your Musher forum. We need to help get his name out there to help the fundraising efforts.
10:57 am on March 3rd, 2013
Staff, great puzzle! Thank you.
11:02 am on March 3rd, 2013
After thirty-eight years of teaching English, it is almost impossible to annoy me. As to letting my hair down…I just cut it yesterday.
11:04 am on March 3rd, 2013
Bee is cracking us up. 🙂
Siber, we saw something about that gps video yesterday but didn’t watch it. Now we can’t find it. GAH!
11:04 am on March 3rd, 2013
Wooo! We here are all setup for the restart in Willow.
With a tip of the hat to HOH for the “phrase”.
Common-taters: Be careful what you say (or in this case don’t say) we will be listening to you.
Staff: Thanks for the puzzle. This is a keeper!
11:11 am on March 3rd, 2013
I just tucked Dad in for his morning nap. Alice is on the table in the sun and I watched the 2013 pre-race (which took an hour to download.) I am ready to go.
I better go check out that tracker video…
11:14 am on March 3rd, 2013
Fellow Sibers, Go to the Iditarod’s home page and scroll down just a bit. That video is right there under, “Insider Videos”
11:15 am on March 3rd, 2013
Greetings!
Prof and I are getting ready to have breakfaast with AJ, Rebecca, Mick and Jodi (the people, not the puppies) before the big start today.
I am very flattered that staff made a puzzle of me and Rio, Jr. He was very excited to make the team, so we were talking strategy….
B: According to AJ, Charlie had an excellent run yesterday, despite being a bit nervouse. Apparently, last year, a photographer crowded his space.
Can I hear a “GO SNOWHOOK” from youse guys?
GO SNOWHOOK!
BBL
11:16 am on March 3rd, 2013
Good morning everybody. Happy race day!
We love all the puzzles on ND’s page. Can’t wait to try them all.
All of Sharon’s tater talk has made us hungry for some hash browns. And bacon, just because it goes good with hash browns. And a waffle, and maybe some eggs. Gah, there is nothing here but oatmeal.
I had no idea that gall bladders were so cute!

11:20 am on March 3rd, 2013
Rose….Just for you and Snowhook
GO SNOWHOOK!!!!
11:23 am on March 3rd, 2013
I must have missed the list of who made the team. Can someone point me in the right direction to find it?
11:24 am on March 3rd, 2013
Greetings all!
We are cracking up with our newbies.
Sharon and HOH – nothing half-baked(potato) about your sense of humor.
Fresca- tee hee. We do love our Queen Bee of the Ivory Tower.
And welcome to the blog. Hope you can hang out with us.
Gramp is taking everyone out for brunch at a maple sugar house. Yummmmmm
See ya all later.
11:25 am on March 3rd, 2013
Macy’s gall bladder made me forget what I was going to say….
Oh yes: Go CHARLIE!
11:26 am on March 3rd, 2013
Min-Pin: That’s funny!
GO SNOWHOOK!!!
11:27 am on March 3rd, 2013
And GO SNOWHOOK!
11:28 am on March 3rd, 2013
If we all gain lots of pounds after all the food talk, WE do not want to be blamed. Morning T&G, Rose and Fresca. Once more: Go Snowhook.
11:28 am on March 3rd, 2013
T&G: I’ll bet I can beat you at b-l-a-c-k-j-a-c-k…when you come of age.
11:32 am on March 3rd, 2013
Good to hear from Rose. And Macy too. Hope your dad is doing well on the road to recovery.
Bee, What is wrong with Ab-Fab? We thought it was cute and catchy.
Barb is going to get a ride to the Li-berry this afternoon. She ordered a book called Moon Over Manifest, which she bought for Baye for Christmas. It is a young adult book, first novel by Claire Vanderpool, and won a Newberry Award in 2010 or 2011. It looked interesting, so Barb decided to read it, partially to discuss with Baye.
Lily finally started reading the Ingrid series. Baye loved them and kept encouraging her to read them. She came into Kelly’s bedroom the other night and said she was scared. Ingrid was hiding under Crack-Up Katie’s’ bed. She kept asking Kelly, “Was it the killer that came into the room? Please, please tell me”. Funny.
11:37 am on March 3rd, 2013
B: We have no doubt. After watching you and Natasha leave Vegas, after the last mission, with the red Porsche stuffed full of money.
11:49 am on March 3rd, 2013
Oh, and btw, we went back and read A & L’s remarkable prayer from last night. It was just beautiful! We are so lucky to have them on the blog.
Welcome Fresca. You are refreshing, like the drink.
11:54 am on March 3rd, 2013
GO SNOWHOOK !!!!!!
11:55 am on March 3rd, 2013
This is posted on AJ’s forum blog. I hope Rebecca sees it and contacts Kit. Her SDD is on the post. She has kept it safe for 3 years!
“I found AJ’ s 2010 Iditarod Musher ID tag at the Skwentna checkpoint, not sure if he threw it away or lost it during the confusion…would love to return it to him, if he wants it!”
11:57 am on March 3rd, 2013
Start!… Today is the Day we’ve all been working towards and waiting for!…Wooooo!….What a great post up above to start the day off right!…snort!
Photos!…I love!love!love! the photos! The one of Rose and Junior is priceless. Someone here will be printing and framing that one…chuffle!…I’m so damned proud of Junior making the team. I get all choked up when I think about him out there with the A-Team keeping the Giant safe on their adventure to Nome….Wow!
Forums!…I’m really enjoying the discussion out on my topic, “Does money matter?”…snort!….This is going far better than I planned. Although, we are probably done saying stuff. I need to come up with a new hot-topic. Any ideas?….wheeze!
12:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
oh yeah, And GO SNOWHOOK!
grrrr I have to wait until 4:30 Central for the race to start.
While I was cruising around on the I site I read Joe Runyons post called “an overview for the serious fan”. Very interesting discussion of strategy.
12:03 pm on March 3rd, 2013
And….
for those of you who do not facebookie this was posted on Snowhooks page this morning.
I LOVE this photo.
12:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks, Siber. For some reason, we didn’t see it there when looked earlier. Nerves? You tell
meUs.12:05 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Go Snowhook!!!
Which topic did y’all post the comments about the common taters under? Mom wants to check them out.
We are so envious of Rose and the Prof! This is so on ur bucket list. Mom is putting up the official map we got from Dawson and printing out the checkpoint map that Melanie made and getting out the push pins.
We really want to know the names of the starting Ateam! Maybe Rose can post it for us if Rebecca is so busy?
Go SNOWHOOK!!!
12:07 pm on March 3rd, 2013
What is wrong with “ab-fab”? As with the use of acronyms, it is lazy writing. The purpose of language is communication which is why it is necessary to have “standards.” Think about it.
12:10 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We want to see a picture of Wose with her BFF.
We too want to hear who is on the A-Team, but not until after the Start. We don’t want to jinx.
12:20 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Bee, your points are valid. But there is no point in talking sense to a pleather of Plunderers on Race Day. We are giddy with excitement!
(I’m not sure if pleather is a word or not, but I like the way it sounds.)
GO SNOWHOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
12:23 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Bee, We will need to conversate more about that!
12:28 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Staff, NO…Your Race coverage should begin at 12:30 your time because it begins at 11:30 my time. The actual start of the race should begin at 1:00 for you.
Rio, I am trying to think of new topics, but right now I am drawing a big blank.
12:30 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Mom just got off the phone with her old college friend in San Francisco. She told her about our fabulous Snowhook team racing in the Iditarod. Now we have another fan who will be following AJ down the trail this year.
12:31 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie, We thought pleather was synthetic leather!
Is Cody still with his girlfriend and his other family?
12:36 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I like the picture of AJ from Facebook.
12:37 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie! Pleather of Plunderers!!! We Love it!
12:37 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Today’s race starts at 6:00 EST, so wouldn’t that be 5:00 Staff Time?
Bee, we did not mean to post an acronym immediately following your knock on acronyms. Although, to be honest, we here are fairly lazy.
12:38 pm on March 3rd, 2013
What? Thank you Mr.Husky for the time update. I am obviously confused. I think it is the plethora of various time zones that have me mixed up.
12:38 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Wolfie: Plethora…from Greek plethein, to be full.
12:38 pm on March 3rd, 2013
And, Love, love AJ’s photo! He looks so Happy.
12:41 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Now Howlers are making me laugh.
As with any group, we’ve developed “coded” language.
12:42 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Hold the Presses!!! I was wrong about the time of the start of the race. Staff is correct. GAH
We have to wait a looong time for the race to start.
I could create a minor Grand Canyon in the backyard in the time we have to wait.
12:42 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Mr.Husky I am still confused. I looked at the front page of the Iditarod.com and it says…under featured stories…2pm AK and 6 pm Eastern…so you see…
I was thinking it was weird that they would start so late.
Who is RIGHT????? Waaaaaaaa.sniff…
12:42 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Siber-H: So it’s 10:30 my Time?
12:43 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Does “plethora” need “various”? I’ll stop now.
12:43 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Alice, see my above post
sorry, Alice
12:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
2:30 Perhaps???
12:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Oh, And number 34 won the race last year…too.
12:45 pm on March 3rd, 2013
B…cough cough. No, it doesn’t.
12:47 pm on March 3rd, 2013
OhMYDog.
I am going off line for a while.
BBL
12:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Bear, Yes, 2:30 your time or 3:00 your time for the actual start of the race.
12:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Pleather, plethora, almost the same thing!
Bee, Go to your listening bench for a little time out, and then you can use your words. heehee
12:52 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Plenty of Time to Race to the Store for Supplies.
1:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
B.Stover, I downloaded a “free” eBook to read. Yikes! Every noun had two adjectives, and let’s not get started on what the writer did to verbs. I got through one chapter. That will teach me.
Hello Fresca!
Macy, had a fight here today. Mattie blurred off to what she thought was Willow, AK. She ended up here instead . .

. . which turns out to be Willow, ARKANSAS. I warned her about letting Rose plan the blurring, but Mattie was busy downloading the trail info from Coach W-L.
When Mattie came back, the fur flew! She has now gotten the correct coordinates and will be leaving momentarily.
She also requests that the team pull the sled instead of riding on her. She’s the smallest of the Newfs and believes all of you would not fit.
1:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We had 280 posts yesterday. Is that a new high?
Bee, you can come back now.
1:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks for all the welcomes. I am a live and let live kind of gal. I even had puppies out of wedlock. He may have been a stud, but he was such a deadbeat.
1:05 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We read an article about microwave popcorn. Yikes! We will never buy that stuff again. The packaging is dangerous, the fake stuff that tastes like butter is dangerous, plus they use GMO corn, unless it is organic. No one has any idea of the long range effects of GMO products. We will now be popping our own corn if we want popcorn for a treat!
1:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca, you need to be wary of those one Knight Studs!
I am watching a video about Michael Telpin and his Chuckchi Huskies. Very cool. Nice looking dogs. One of the white dogs has a black eyebrow and a black eye.
Couldn’t understand a word of what they were saying. (the two legged, not the four)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKs0zurxzBY
1:10 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Melanie, tell Mattie: two words – saddle bags. Those that don’t fit on her back can ride on the sides.
I bet there was some major excitement at that water park when a bear came down the slide.
Welcome, Fresca.
1:12 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I just received an email from the Iditarod Insider stating that the race starts at 2PM Alaska time, 6PM EST.
1:13 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Go Snowhook!
Great race day post. Excellent photos.
Rio Jr. is paying close attention to Rose’s words.
The Professor is looking very happy that beef was served rather than moose. 🙂
MacyMinPin: That cute little thang caused all that trouble?
Fresca the Free Spirit: Ellipsis much?
1:17 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Welcome, Freska. Once again, the dude got to have fun abpnd you’re left holding the pup.
Barb, are you able to find non-GMO corn? We are trying to figure out that one. A group of us in our area are on a mission…
1:18 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca, not Freska. doh
1:21 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Melanie: Was it a self-published free e-book?
1:21 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Mr. or Ms. Howler, spelling is just a means of communication. If the meaning is clear, the letters don’t matter.
Dawson… … … … … … … … …
1:23 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca, Welcome! I’m sorry I am a little late with my welcome.
I am very guilty of having a one-track mind this time of year.
Melanie, Thanks for the video. I am so impressed with those dogs. I wish them well.
GO SNOWHOOK!!!
1:23 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Commented on Maury’s post about equal coverage.
I am now going to fiddle with the picture of Rio, Jr and Rose.
1:26 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Macy, I agree.
1:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca the Free Spirit: Cool name!
1:32 pm on March 3rd, 2013
This was copied from the blog “Walter the Wonder Pug”. For some reason it reminded me of someone. (BTW, Walter is recovering from being hit by a car)
“So this is to say, we made it to Key West again, which as you know became out PUG HAVEN last year, when I had the movie-worthy freak-out and shouted (to no one) ‘ENOUGH! I CAN’T WATCH THAT PUG SLIP ONE MORE TIME ON THE FREAKING ICE! WE’RE DRIVING TO KEY WEST! WEATHER, LOGIC AND COMMON SENSE BE DAMNED!'”
1:32 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I didn’t check. It’s one that it is published by Storymill Publishing. New firm that launched in 2011, and partners with Amazon.
It says you have to email them if you want to be considered for their author’s list. I believe, but I am not going to check it out, that you have to pay to have your book listed and published by them. The regular price of the book is $4.99.
1:36 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Melanie: The video showing the Chuckchi Huskies was great…we
saw the one with the black eyebrow and black eye…and did you see the guy that refused to lie down? he kept popping his little head back up every time Telpin put it down. Heh, heh.
1:39 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Someone commented on how mellow they were compared to Sibes. Hmmm . . Maybe they were just tired after running 101 miles?
A little touch up of Rose and Riö Jr.
1:42 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Oleys, If you can find organic corn, then it will not be GMO. You can buy organic popcorn. I think the larger grocery stores carry it, plus places like Fresh Market and Whole Foods. What kind of corn are you looking for? Popcorn, corn for the dinner table, seed corn for the garden, or corn for livestock?
1:54 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks Melanie, I love that picture of Rose and Junior, and the Chet the Dog Patch.
1:58 pm on March 3rd, 2013
No problemo . .
I now have the official countdown to the race from the GPS people on the computer. I have to say it’s making me nervous.
Unfortunately, it tells me there is still time to do poop patrol. sigh

This from http://www.ktuu.com:
“Iditarod: Celebrating Tradition” will be hosted by Channel 2 Sports Director Kevin Wells who will be joined by 1985 Iditarod Champion Libby Riddles, the first female champion in Iditarod’s 40-year history. KTUU.com will live-stream this unique news program featuring the celebration of tradition, and it will be archived for online viewing following the event.

Thanks, Masquers, A couple of years ago, Sebastian Schuelle and Libby Riddles were a couple. I don’t know if they still are, but I hope they are.
2:26 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Mel, you’re a digital Ansel Adams. Popcorn…like in an “old” air popper ir grease? (either sounds good) Oh, and at mile 101, the HOH would be CATatonic (or maybe a cat would be a tonic).
2:28 pm on March 3rd, 2013
air popper OR grease…Keys are too close together!
2:31 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Walter!…The Miracle Pug…heh!snort!….Too bad they didn’t keep the blog going. The last post was in 2011 sometime..grunt!…I wonder how Walter is doing these days…sniff!
2:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Viewing!…So are youse guys going to watch the KTUU live show, or the Insider “live” show?…snort!…SiberH which one do you suggest?
2:38 pm on March 3rd, 2013
HOH, Barb never liked the air poppers. Pretty tasteless. Old fashioned heavy pan with some oil.
Going to have a little nap before the race. BBL
2:43 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Rio, I will watch the Insider live steaming. I tried yesterday to watch the live streming on KTUU and it didn’t work for me.
Maybe the KTUU show will work for me once they put it in the archives. I like Libby Riddles and I liked her book, “Race Across Alaska”.
I will say that I have low expectations of the Insider’s announcers once again today.
2:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
((((sigh))))…I am not going to get mad until necessary…grunt!
2:46 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Walk!…Someone got all the laundry, shopping and vacuuming done early…wheeze!…She says it’s time for a brutal walk but we will not be going because she says we are far too out of shape to go that far…heh!heh!burp!…Pass me those hot wings.
2:47 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks Masquers, I am watching the Iditarod: Celebrating Tradition Part 1
Zoe is now doing Poop Patrol. My mother is awesome. She wants to keep doing the things she was doing before she fell. She is now!
She is walking. She is pilling and feeding the Pack. She is doing Poop Patrol and she is back to driving.
Someone (in the family) said, You LET her do that? I just told them that I am not Zoë’s warden. She is capable of knowing when and what she can do. (Sorry, B.Stover. I just couldn’t figure out how to end that sentence without a preposition)

We use popcorn from our favorite dry goods store. We make it in the microwave in a paper bag with some vegetable oil. Not sure if it is organic.
We would like to buy non-GMO corn on the cob, but even at organic stands, the corn is not organic.
We love those Russian huskies. Thanks for the video, Melanie.
The rents went on a walkabout with us just now, to relax the pre-race jitters. It is really cold and windy in those fields!
2:55 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca – velcome to blog. Siber tells truth about von track mind during race. Ve vere vearing best red high heels and matching lipstick during race last year, and all he talked about vas race, race, race. He never even noticed poor Natasha freezing elegant and fabulous tail off.
Studs. Vhat can you do?
3:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Melanie: Zoe is beyond amazing. She is my hero.
Gah. Prepositions and dangling participles. The problem of ending sentences with prepositions…sad to say this happens to us all the time.
(side note: this blog is so educational!)
3:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Ms. Natasha, I hope your tail has grown back by now. Perhaps a tail-gaiter would be in order. The bunny boots will be much more comfortable, plus you can wear socks. Bundle up girl, you don’t seem to have much of a coat.
Studs, don’t get me started. At least my little ones are all grown up with homes of their own. I am OUT of the puppy business.
3:31 pm on March 3rd, 2013

Why, Thank you, B. I am feeling much better now.
3:53 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks for that, B!
CHobbit: Hope your jaw is feeling even better today. Your Willow checkpoint is coming up in just over 2 hours and I know I will hear you cheering, “Go Snowhook!” all the way from the North Pole.
3:58 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thank Dog, B. Stover. Some sentences can be come so convoluted that it sounds like Yoda is speaking.
My sister is coming over in awhile to learn how to use the GPS and other portions of the Iditarod website. She does not want to look like a Newbie when she does this in front of her classes.
snicker
4:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
C.Hobbit: Ditto to what the Awesome One said. Hope you are able to make your Friend’s Birthday Bash.

4:11 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Bear!…No one out there knows I’m a pug…snort!…It’s great….heh!
4:18 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Staff watched some of KTUU’s coverage yesterday but went back to the Iditarod site. The reason was the photography on the Iditarod site was much better than the TV station. (I don’t think they let the TV cameras in the street. At any rate the part I watched was on the sidewalk and we got photo’s of the backs of the Insider photographers in front of the sleds.
4:21 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Dawson and Bear: I was able to stuff myself at last night’s party. Finger foods and treaties and two different cakes and ice cream. I overdid but it was worth it.
iI have two different TVs on in different rooms as I do housework and my iPaw is ready for GPS tracking
GO SNOWHOOK!!!
4:26 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Rio: Maybe……BTW who else is in there with you? Are they friendly critters?
Staff: So…what you are saying is…we are stuck with the Insider Coverage?
Dog knows they had better be On Top Of Things today or, as Wookie’s Dad said yesterday, There Will Be Consequences.
4:26 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Having been in Willow last year at the start, I know what Rose and the Prof are experiencing right now.
4:28 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Wow, there is so much to catch up on.
Brunch at the sugar house was just perfect. This place is a regular stop for us in farm season as they have apple and ear orchards and all kinds of organic produce from their gardens and pork and chicken from their barns.
They just built a beautiful new barn, and are having weekend breakfasts there during sugar season. When we got there, a five piece band was playing acoustic music with banjos, guitars, harmonicas and mandolins (the musical kind). This is a group of older men who get together just to play for enjoyment. So brunch was accompanied by “Charlie on the MTA” and “Amazing Grace” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds”. It was the best Sunday brunch – going back next Sunday for sure!
Thanks to the generosity of a wonderful friend, we were also able to sign in as an Insider. So, we had a lot of fun reading all your comments in the forums. We can’t post as it would show up as our friend’s comments, but you all know that we are in agreement with everything you all say.
4:29 pm on March 3rd, 2013
C.Hobbit: Good to hear you had a Great Time. This means your Jaw is getting Better.
4:30 pm on March 3rd, 2013
CHobbit!…Do tell! What are they experiencing right now?…snort!
4:32 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Royals: Your Brunchfast sounds Scrumptous!
4:34 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Drooling!…I’m so hungry right now. Especially after reading about Stinky Mama’s brunch…sniff!…No one will feed me….wheeze!
4:45 pm on March 3rd, 2013
What Rose & Prof are experiencing right now…Dogs are coming out of the truck. Booties are being put on. Lots of dog pats and hugs. Dogs are being hooked to the sled. Teams are being queued up. Once the start begins there is not much time between teams. It goes fast
My heart is beginning to beat faster. Anyone else? GO SNOWHOOK
Rebecca YOU ROCK
Ditto Rose and the Prof
4:47 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Photos!…I sure hope Rose remembers to take lots and lots of photos for us…sniff!
4:52 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fast is the opposite of feast. Thus, breakfast breaks fast.
4:53 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Last year I was asked about my Chet patch so Rose and the Prof will have lots of opportunities to talk about Snowhook and the Chet mysteries.
TV reporters will have come around a couple of times to each team doing filming. It would be cool if Rose and the Prof could talk about coming all the way from NY to support our team
4:54 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fast!…I want supperfast…heh!
4:55 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We here are hitched and ready!
We have been to the chat and everyone seems nice, even some guy named Rio.
4:57 pm on March 3rd, 2013
And in the chat we can talk in real time, plus see who is there and not there. Come on over, it won’t bite.
4:58 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Fresca!…What was your name?…snort!…There is someone from Texas out there who is a plunderer – wonder who that could be?…heh!

5:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013

5:03 pm on March 3rd, 2013

Before last years race, justin talks about the search for Whitey-Lance.
5:05 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Okay, so mom called GCI, the cable company. She talked to Valerie, and the Insider will be streaming live through GCI. There should be a link on the website starting now.
5:09 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I lied. It starts at 1:30 AK time.
5:16 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Good detective work, Rio. We noticed the big Texas shaped rock in the center. Those dawgs look a lot like Macy and her kids. Could it be?
5:16 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Thanks for the links, Staff.
Wolfie: We are all so anxious one can’t help but trying to move time a little faster.
5:20 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Barb!…Are you saying that Macy is logging in as someone named Fresca?…snort!…Is this true? I’m not sure that is Macy and her herd…sniff!
5:24 pm on March 3rd, 2013
6 minutes!!!
5:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I still show 13 minutes before the GPS starts. Sigh
My sister has an overview of how to use the GPS. By the time she gets home it should have started.
5:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
testing, testing……
5:29 pm on March 3rd, 2013
hmmm – we just noticed the Texas rock in Fresca’s picture. Do you suppose that could mean…..?
5:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
It’s on!
5:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
They like rocks from Texas?
5:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Hey! We just realized…AJ is wearing no. 34…the Winning No. from last year!
5:34 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Good Grief. There is an Echo! Jeez.
5:39 pm on March 3rd, 2013
http://iditarod.com/video/page/4/
Justin Savidis is 45th Musher into Nome. On this page of the video’s.
5:42 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Is anybody else getting a stupid pink screen?
5:43 pm on March 3rd, 2013
HOH, There is a big stepping stone in the picture that is in the shape of Texas.
Rio, We were wondering if Fresca is one of Macy’s kids. We remember a picture of the kids having a meal when they were little. They were all standing up in Macy’s foyer. One pup was red, but can’t remember if one was tan. Pondering.
5:45 pm on March 3rd, 2013
http://iditarod.com/video/page/14/
Justin Savidis talks before the ceremonial start last year. On page 14 of the video’s.
5:45 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Pink!…And the volume is very low…snort!…Are youse guys experiencing this too?…grump!
5:48 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I have the GPS up and running. Nothing on the coverage yet. Sigh
5:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
B&M we really saw it. Mom says she stayed in a motel in Amarillo once with a sink shaped like Texas. Why is it so hard to get good video coverage of race?
5:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Issues!…We are experiencing technical difficulties…grump!
5:50 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Youse guys gotta come over to the chat room. No need to refresh, and everyone is really nice.
5:51 pm on March 3rd, 2013
THEY are experiencing technical issues. I am sick of them, and Rio, once the race begins, we have a new topic.
5:53 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Yep chat is nice and some new people to talk to.
5:53 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Have it now after watching the test pattern.
5:54 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Ops gone and left with a pink screen.
5:56 pm on March 3rd, 2013
And not a pretty pink.
5:57 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Wanna start taking b-e-t-s as to whether or not we will get all the coverage of the re-start.
5:57 pm on March 3rd, 2013
SiberH!…I’m sharpening my claws as we wait for the Live Feed…sniff!grump!
5:58 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Phooey.
5:59 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Finally
6:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Waaaaahooooo
6:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013
First dogs off the start and now we got a test pattern
6:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
If you keep getting the pink screen then refresh worked for me.
6:05 pm on March 3rd, 2013
It came back after a couple seconds.
6:06 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I notice at least one of the commentators is different.
6:09 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I believe they are both different announcers.
6:09 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Is the test pattern when they are taking a break?
6:14 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Maybe AJ should develop a Stoverian accent for the race?
6:15 pm on March 3rd, 2013
When they go on commercial breaks
6:16 pm on March 3rd, 2013
U like the Ceremonial Start, they can’t pause the start today for commercial breaks. We already missed #6.
6:17 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I am OK now but I am just staying at the Iditaroder front page.
6:17 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Unlike the Ceremonial Start, they can’t pause the start today for commercial breaks. We already missed #6.
6:19 pm on March 3rd, 2013
They better not commercial over AJ. They could do a delay so that no one is missed, but that is probably more technical than they can do,
6:20 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Didn’t miss anyone that time, but did cut 11’s time for fame.
6:21 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I know now who the male announcer is….Vern Halter. He is an older, very experienced and respected musher.
I don’t know where they found the female announcer.
6:23 pm on March 3rd, 2013
They are having enough trouble with video let alone delaying it.
6:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
These taters are much better, IMHO
6:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We here cannot imagine the rush you must get when you take off from civilization.
6:28 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The gorge is worse this year? Did house hear them say that?
6:29 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Yes, They said that
6:29 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Please forgive our typos…we are going back and forth from the chat room.
6:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The woman announcer reminds us of Frances McDormand in Fargo.
6:39 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Whew!…I am really enjoying these Common-Taters…snort!…So much better informed than those two nitwits yesterday…grunt!…Plus, there is no fog and it is a beautiful day in Willow!…snort!…I sure hope we see Rose and the Prof soon!…WOOOOOO!
6:43 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We like them too.
6:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Ten more teams. We should let them know these guys are much better.
6:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We are so nervous that there will be a commercial during AJ’s start!!!
6:48 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I am too
6:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The dentist is a runner too.
Wonder what happens to him when he loses weight on the trail?
I shall have to watch hie performance.
6:49 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The commercial breaks are soooo annoying.
6:50 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Commercial!…I shudder to think about it…wheeze!
6:52 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Go Ally!
6:54 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Cool! Take a break now and be back for AJ!!
6:55 pm on March 3rd, 2013
That wasn’t a long commercial.
6:56 pm on March 3rd, 2013
It wasn’t a long break . .
6:57 pm on March 3rd, 2013
That wasn’t a real commercial….not the t.v. Channel’s commercial. Nervous here
6:58 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I hope his break is it until AJ is off and running!
7:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Melanie!…All paws crossed and tails curled here…yeeep!
7:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Ok everybody sit down and relax
7:01 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Argggg. I need to remember to breathe.
7:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013
AJ is Next!
7:02 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I saw AJ and team pull up in the back
7:03 pm on March 3rd, 2013

7:06 pm on March 3rd, 2013

7:07 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Godspeed, AJ. Plunderers are with you and Rebecca.
7:07 pm on March 3rd, 2013
They said the dogs look fast.
7:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Why was Rebecca crying?
They even interviewed AJ!!! And really complimented our team…said they looked so strong and fast! These guys are great!
7:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Much, much better. Go Snowhook!
7:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
7:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013

7:08 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Sigh. What a wonderful moment. The dogs looked great!
7:09 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The Snowhook dogs and AJ are ready to Rock and Roll!! GO SNOWHOOK!!!

7:12 pm on March 3rd, 2013
7:12 pm on March 3rd, 2013
You know, although AJ and Bella are doing all the work, I feel as if a little piece of everyone of us is going also.
7:12 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Or this one . .
7:13 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Ramey! We love him too.
7:13 pm on March 3rd, 2013
The Insider has been vindicated today.
Melanie: Great screen shots.
7:14 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Whew, I’m so glad that AJ is now on the trail.
Of course, now I’ll be obsessively watching the green flag.
snicker
7:15 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Like this . .
7:19 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Oh man! We are so happy and relieved. For now. Later we will spend countless days pacing. 🙂
7:28 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I told the Iditarod Committee Facebook page that I liked these announcers.
7:31 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Poop!…Patrol on the starting lane…heh!heh!…How do you go about getting that job?…snort!
7:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013

7:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Show up and say I want help and they hand you a pooper scooper.
7:33 pm on March 3rd, 2013

I can’t wait to launch the tracker as soon as the start is finished.
8:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I now have the tracker on my iPaw.
Mikal is leaving right now. His dogs are beautiful. It will be interesting to see how these dogs go. He’s running 12 I think they said. They are supposed to be very powerful but not as fast.
8:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
SiberH!…We are watching all the Starts…snort!…Yesterday we were to mad to watch all of the teams…grunt!
8:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Nobody was even holding those dogs!!! Did youse see that?
8:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Rio – we thought “Evil” was your middle name…
We agree that everyone should post on the forums that these announcers were very good. Everyone got their due – even the ones who got to the line during a commercial break.
We also find it amusing that they had constant commercials to join the Insider, when only by being an Insider could you see the start today. Cyclical thinking?
And as to Rebecca crying – weren’t we all?
8:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
That’s some furry dogs there!
8:05 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Whew, I’m getting ready to go upstairs. I will begin the watching of the green flag.
Tired from yesterday and not breathing from today.
8:11 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I checked Facebook first and the Committee liked my comment. Here it is. .
“Congratulations on the new commentators. They are informative and do not put any musher down. MM”
I think Wookie’s Dad had a great idea.
Going up now.
8:12 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Breaking!…grunt!…On the last team? That is just cruel..grump!
8:16 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Oh. There was one more team – 67?…sniff!…Supper time finally!…Woooo!…Go Snowhook!
8:27 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Nighty ramen y’all
8:29 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I am ready for the GPS Tracker, but it isn’t ready for us yet.
Maybe they figure there is no point when all the green flags would be globbed together.
8:35 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Siber, What do you mean? We’ve been watching the GPS Tracker..
8:38 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Siber: GPS tracker…me too.
8:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
I see no place on the home page to click on the Tracker. How are you guys doing it?
Yes, I have refreshed the pager.
8:44 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Us, too, SiberH. And it’s is updating just fine.

8:47 pm on March 3rd, 2013

8:54 pm on March 3rd, 2013
We are going to bed now too. Mom is still sick. T&G, she says that she may have to follow your advice.
We will join in the prayer, but then we have to turn everything off and snuggle Mom.
9:00 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Creator – we thank you for the sun and the blue skies. We thank you for the cold, clear air that gives us breath, and for the snow and the rain that quenches our thirst.
Today, we ask you to give good breath and good snow to all the strong and honorable teams on the Iditarod trail. Tonight, their first night of the journey will be the hardest for all. Each musher will be thinking of the days to come, the miles to cover. Each family left behind will be thinking of those on the trail, and how long it will be before they are home.
Tonight, we ask you to make this a night full of magic. Let the moon and brilliant starlight shine down on the trail. Let the cold air be full of the happy ring of barking as the dogs stretch out their legs in running. For this is indeed a night of magic, a night when the souls of dogs and mushers are joined as one, living out the wonder of racing across the arctic.
Creator – on this night, their adventure begins. We ask you to watch over every team on the trail so that every racer who crossed the starting line also crosses the finish line in victory. For victory will be in the safe run of the race, without illness or injury, no matter the order of crossing the line.
Tonight we ask you to be with AJ and the Snowhook dogs. Let their running be smooth, let their resting be restorative, let their courage be unflagging, and let their joy be unfettered. As the team leaves the closeness of home, bring peace to the hearts of both AJ and Rebecca. Peace of knowing that training and preparations are done, peace of knowing that the dogs are healthy and ready, and especially the peace of knowing that they are loved and supported by the friends and family who surround them with good thoughts.
Creator – we ask you to set the skies ablaze with the wonders of the Northern Lights that all the teams may share in the beauty of your world. Each day, as the sun rises over the horizon, let each team know the hope of a new day. Each night, as the stars appear, let each team know that they are not alone in the dark; that the hopes and prayers of all the families will surround them as surely as the air they breathe.
On this night of magic, we also ask you to surround those in need with that feeling. We bring Jesse to you, and ask that his pain be lifted, and that the right help can be found. We ask that Staff and Dawson’s father find his way to peace and contentment with his time on this earth. We ask you to support Barb as she works to regain her strength and mobility. We thank you for the remarkable recovery of our intrepid Zoe, and ask you to stay with her as she grows stronger, but also help her to have patience. We thank you for the good news about Bev, and the recovery of Gus and BooBear’s dad. We thank you for showing this loving group of friends a way to reach out and truly become a family on this earth. Our blessings are so many. Our troubles are so small. Our lifetime is the one gift directly from you to each individual. Help us to live and love that special gift by caring for our lifetime in the best way we can.
Creator – we thank you for the sun and the blue skies. We thank you for the cold, clear air that gives us breath, and for the snow and the rain that quenches our thirst. We thank you for the beauty of the world you have given us for this lifetime as we try to live it well.

Rio, I don’t believe we can change the time the tracker updates.
It will update every 10 minutes. This is an improvement this year because before when it updated it was more like 20 or 25 minutes.
10:04 pm on March 3rd, 2013
SiberH!…It seemed a lot shorter time period last year for some reason…sniff!
10:17 pm on March 3rd, 2013
A&L — thanks for another beautiful prayer. The definitely need to be saved somewhere. Although it is still early, it is great watching the progress across the map.
10:20 pm on March 3rd, 2013
Rio, It was actually a longer period last year, but sometimes the indivudual musher’s trackers would not update when they were suppose to. That made for a really long wait.
I don’t know how much of that we will experience this year.

Just checked on OFM and Team. Mile 35 , wow.
I am about to shut off the light. I have Patsy by my side. Those cheese lures are working. I can get Into bed and pull the covers where I want them before Patsy joins me.
I do find the cheese melts in my pocket if I forget it’s there.

What a day, what a day. First, I want to say how honored we here at the Kennel are to have such rabid fans. However, I still think you might want to check into getting a vaccination.
We had a good breakfast with Rose and the Professor, and Mick and Jodi, the people, not the puppies. When I say ‘we,’ I mean the two-leggeds. I was not invited. After breakfast, Rose and the Professor rode in the dog truck—the cab not the dog box—and headed to the staging area. There were a lot of people. After a lot of waiting around allowing for ample attention to be given, it was time to get ready. In the six minutes following the nod from race officials that the team could leave the truck and head for the starting line, Jesse chewed through three tug lines—the line that attaches his harness to the gang line. My Lady is upset at herself for getting frustrated at what should be a happy, albeit stressful time. We still love her anyway.
AJ just made it to the first checkpoint of Yentna. She can’t help but think how grateful she is that Rose and the Professor could join them at the starting line, and she is equally grateful for all the Plunderers and the support and friendship you’ve shown our kennel.

Hi Coach, sometimes you just got to let those leggeds know how excited you are about moving on the trail. When we are headed out for Walk/Run ( and swim if we can) we ocasionally knock one of our two leggeds against the wall. We always apologize, sooner or later. Luckily they have good funny bones. I’ve heard them talk about those funny bones when I brush pass them to get in the van.
Next time you talk to Jesse? Tell him We here in the Newf Pack understand.
Signing off before my two legged wakes up, Patsy
