Amazon vs. Hachette
“Anything to say about the dispute between Amazon and Hachette?” Spence says.
“The Department of Justice messed up from the beginning and the judge compounded it,” says Admin. “She didn’t realize that Apple – and the book publishers – were the little guys and Amazon was the big guy. The result will be bad for writers.”
“That sounds depressing.”
“On the other hand, it’s almost summer.”
“Yay.”
Welcome Wally from Down Under.

Good morning, everyone! “and justice for…” Read that somewhere once.
Peaceful night here, no raccoon and Blondie slept through. Been a whirlwind since 6:30 when the Boarder went to another day of orientation and released Blondie on us. Thinking breakfast will help settle things down.
Have a windblown Wednesday ๐
7:57 am on June 4th, 2014
Good morning. We missed all of that Amazon news…must look for it.
Glad Blondie slept. Poor girl. Imagine! How do people like that live with themselves? Mom still cries for Zeus, who actually is enjoying life.
Welcome Wally. Do you happen to know our friend Liz? If not, you should.
8:16 am on June 4th, 2014
Hello Everyone–I’m delighted to hear that Blondie is settling in (nothing like a new baby, huh?) Ditto for Zeus.
Also unaware of the Amazon situation but will get right on it in case there’s a quiz later.
A ballet buddy invited me to her son’s wedding yesterday (the invitation, not the wedding). Gah! Have top get Botox’d in time for any incidental bruising to die down.
I hope I’m not expected to bring a date–that ship has pretty much sailed (maybe I can bring Edgar or Conan).
Everyone have a wonderful day and enjoy your water supply if it’s plentiful.
8:22 am on June 4th, 2014
HOH–Yep, you have to shoot one (and I admire your forbearance in not spelling “violence” as “violins”).
8:38 am on June 4th, 2014
Good morning all. Back in the hospital waiting room again. Today is the surgery, and the doc still isn’t too sure of what he will find. Fingers crossed and will find out around noon.
Blondie – you are indeed a lucky girl. Be sure to be extra good cuz your new mom and pack are the best any homeless pup could hope for.
(And curses of blistering boils and itching toes being foisted on the horrid humans who abandoned you)
Nana – what news of #2 Son?
9:06 am on June 4th, 2014
I’ve read several articles about this and I’m still not sure who is at fault. However, I don’t think publishers are as “little” as they claim to be.
Good morning all.
9:54 am on June 4th, 2014
Thinking of Golinka and Nana on this day.
Wanted to catch youse all up. One of mom’s best human friends crossed the bridge on Mother’s Day. Tammy was 54, and it still seems like a bad dream.
Dad’s mom is now in hospice care and dad spends the night there six nights a week. Joanne has COPD, and this could be a long, slow goodbye. She lives an hour away, his job is another hour away in the opposite direction, and this means that mom and dad can no longer commute. With gas being $4.10 a gallon, the cost is killing the budget. Our gas bill for May was $750 and mom finally put her foot down. Either we get help with the costs or dad needs to cut back on the number of nights. This could go on for another year or two.
Baby Jace is now living with us, which is awesome! He is perfectly wonderful. Cody and Breena are living here also, and Cody has finally agreed to attend rehab. It has frustrating trying to wade through the insurance. They are 21 and neither one has a drivers license, and there is no public transportation here. So mom is putting down her other foot and setting boundaries. They receive public aid, and mom is taking most of it. Why? Because she is sick of them wasting their money on tattoos, clothes and drugs while mom provides for Jace. This way, mom can help them save a little money. And it also means that Mom can work closely with CPS. We are seeing some positive changes. Chad is living in Oregon and mom worries constantly.
9:59 am on June 4th, 2014
Ashamed to say we don’t know enough about this to offer an informed opinion.
Blistering boils and itching toes! Conjures up images of a witch’s brew. And yes, they deserve it!
Cool and rainy here. Loos like a mostly inside day. Renee our cleaning girl is coming in a few.
Hope all goes well for the surgery this morning.
10:04 am on June 4th, 2014
Wow, Wolfie, your mom has a full plate. She also is a saint. Sounds like Cody and Breena are back together? Does your mom have to drive them to where ever they have to go?

Well, I’ve been on time three times so far this year. I’ll try to do better in the next half.

Wolfie, we are so very sorry for the loss of your friend. Losing good friends is so difficult.
11:05 am on June 4th, 2014
Hi, Wolfie! Thanks for the Update. Dog only knows how your mom handles it all and still remains sane.
On top of all that the loss of a dear friend. We are so very sorry.
Sending Big Bear Hugs.
Royal Mum: Strong Prayers coming your brother’s way for a Successful Surgery today.
In answer to your earlier question…will hear more about Wes later today.
We here remain Optimistic.
Positive Thoughts & Prayers too for the O’Howler’s uncle, BooBear’s dad and Staff.
Wishing you all a Good News Day.
11:19 am on June 4th, 2014
We here did not know of the situation between Amazon & Hatchette…in fact, were not familiar with the latter publishing group at all.
B: You knew. Mom is feeling uninformed. She had to look it up.
HOH: Lucky Blondie is fitting right in with the pack and feeling quite at home it seems. Nice.
Tyb: Thanks for the June calendar. Hello to Blou!

Thank you Masquers. Hoping for good news about Wes and Amalia’s brother.
Howler’s mom, We are assuming that when you said your deceased friend was found and didn’t leave a note, you indicating that she took her own life. Is that right?
Well, Renee called and said she was sick so the house cleaning has been rescheduled till Monday. Barb is taking an extra afternoon at the office on Friday, which pays for Renee.
Looks like the new roof may be started on Sunday.
12:26 pm on June 4th, 2014
Wolfie: We blurred by to see if your maw’s halo was crooked like ours. We can report it is perfectly straight. Luna says ring around our collars doesn’t count as a halo.
Royals: Luna and Belle Starr are on their way to smooch your uncle.
12:33 pm on June 4th, 2014
Wolfie: We are sorry to hear about your Grandma Joanne being in hospice. It is so hard to say goodbye to those we love..especially moms.
B&M: Youse haven’t lived there that long…new roof?…already?
Day 5 in the hospital for Wes. Paws crossed blood work comes back positive so he can be released.
12:35 pm on June 4th, 2014
Tupper’s Mom: best wishes going your way
Wolfie: Wow
Was painting again last evening. White paint + black dog = {{{sigh}}}. There was a momento when Sadie was resting beside where I was painting and I was very tempted to paint her right ear white. Very tempted ๐ But that would have been wrong, wouldn’t it?

B: Is this the same thing your brother in Arizona was hospitalized for a while back?

cHET would agree!
12:38 pm on June 4th, 2014
Thanks for the link, Masquers. I’m on the side of the writers.
Royal’s, You and your family will be in our prayers today.
Prayers for improvements for both Wes and the Howlers two-legged uncle today.
Staff and BooBear’s Dad, You are in our thoughts and prayers.
12:45 pm on June 4th, 2014
Masquers, Is he feeling much better and is he ready to go home? Will he be recovering more at home, or try to go back to work?
Roof situation – home is about 15-16 years old. The roof is not totally shot, but is discolored and not in the best of shape. It has the old 3-tab shingle and not the newer architectual shingles. There are a lot of people in the neighborhood replacing roofs and it is something Barb had been thinking about for awhile. There was a great sale going on and then Josh said he would help do it and shave another $1,000 off the bid she had gotten. So there you go – we are getting a new roof!
12:47 pm on June 4th, 2014
Tupper’s Mama: Pawyers from Maila and me for your brother’s successful surgery and swift recovery.
That’s me up top. I consider this a good omen for sure.
12:49 pm on June 4th, 2014
B&M: Waiting to hear results of today’s blood work.
1:07 pm on June 4th, 2014
Masquers: I’m not sure what your comment of 12:35 is referring to. Before when my brother was hospitalized, they couldn’t find the cause of the problem. He was recently hospitalized again and they found that he has a bleeding ulcer. He’s taking medicine for it. (He lives in Nevada.) He’s feeling better.
1:25 pm on June 4th, 2014
B: We had a memory of your brother being hospitalized but were thinking it was in Arizona.
It is good to hear he is feeling better.
1:47 pm on June 4th, 2014
Thank you Masquers (and for the two links).
1:52 pm on June 4th, 2014
Masquers, thanks for posting those links. We still don’t understand it but, like Siber, we are on the side of the writers.
B&M: yes ๐
Best wishes for good results for Wes, and for Amalia’s bro, and is Staff getting that hernia surgery?
BooBear, we are always thinking of you. Mom is not good at finding time to find and send cards. So we are sending you a virtual card.
Macy’s Mom, same goes to you. Here is your virtual card: <3

T and G–Please tell your Mum that prayers and good wishes continue to flow from this quarter.
Wolfie–Your Mom is a saint (please tell her I said so) and it sounds like she’s making good decisions. this can be hard, especially while losing a friend untimely and having a mother-in-law in care. Please tell her also I said “Courage!” and send very positive and supportive thoughts her way.

Maya the Pug’s girl is graduating from high school tonight. She has been accepted into a special college program for radiology. The course started last week already! The course is quite rigorous and the students are not allowed to have part-time jobs. If they do they will have to drop out of the program.
3:29 pm on June 4th, 2014
Teddy: Thank Dog for the Happy Ending. sniff.
Congratulations to Maya’s Girl on her graduation tonight and acceptance into the prestigious study program.
4:13 pm on June 4th, 2014
Howdy y’all,
Wolfie, sounds like someone’s got a full plate…
Also, for those who have/are losing loved ones, my condolences also. It’s never easy, no time is a good time for it, and no matter what, you’re never ready.
Right before I went to Boston for that conference, I got a phone call from a friend of mine. We’ve known each other since junior high, since shortly after he lost his vision. Well, we’re both very strong personalities, and, while sometimes he got on my last nerve and I no doubt got on his, we really had a strong bond of friendship, even when we didn’t talk often. He was always in poor health; he was a hemophiliac, and he was always hurting himself somehow or other, and had just been in and out of the hospital a lot as he told me when he called.
There are two things I’ll remember about that call. First, that I yelled at him for wanting to go zip lining with his sister, a thing that struck me as terribly reckless given his precarious health. And second, thinking, “Wow, that was depressing” when I hung up the phone when we were finished.
Because two days later, he died. And not from any of the ways you’d suppose. No, it was a house fire, and he didn’t burn, they got it out, but he died from a heart attack (I think), smoke inhalation, maybe gas…anyway….started because somehow a burner got let on on his stove. So be careful out there guys.
All that to say that I’m there with all of you in your grieving. Because really, you never know. And even if you do know, it’s never the right time.
Well now. That was cheery and uplifting. Except not really. So, hi guys……
4:17 pm on June 4th, 2014
TeddyRuffRider: Thanks for the happy ending story. I needed that.
Spence: it is getting hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys.
HOH: Blondie fell into a good life!
CHobbit: Painting Sadie’s ear would be wrong…unless, you use your “artistic license”.
Mollypop’s&Loulou’sMom: Congratulations to the pug’s girl!
DianeC: You are beautiful without the botox!
Golinka and Nana: Waiting…
4:25 pm on June 4th, 2014
Hi Buddy and Leno: It has been a cold and gloomy day here but just as I was reading your post the sun came out! So that was a bit cheery and uplifting.
There is seemingly little damage from all the snow and rain yesterday (a few sunflowers blew over), although the garden was under water and is now saturated to the max. I won’t have to water for a while.
4:34 pm on June 4th, 2014
Hey, Buddy&Leno! I was just Thinking About You this morning! And, here you are.
It is very good to hear from you even if your news was sad.
A valid point youse made…one can never know if a contact with a friend or loved one will be for the last time.
Dawson: Oh, dear your Poor Garden.
5:26 pm on June 4th, 2014
Hey everyone. Thanks so much for the positive thoughts and prayers. Surgery is done, and brother is now in ICU, but he is alive.
The doctor was able to save part of his lung, by doing some “tricky cutting and pasting” as he called it. And he said that he will personally come and kick brother’s butt if he doesn’t start taking better care of himself. As the doctor said, he didn’t work that hard to save brother’s life just to have brother throw it all away.
We say, hooray for a bas a$$ doctor!
Emotionally and physically exhausted from a looooonnnng day at the hospital. Maybe back later – if not, forgive us for ducking out.
And thanks again. whew
5:26 pm on June 4th, 2014
Spence and Admin didn’t say no to the idea of visiting our Kennel on their New England—whatever that is—tour. We can only assume this means we should prepare for his arrival. Or, that look from Luna may lead us to believe we should consider ourselves on the maybe list.
BSD: We can help Wes bust out of the hospital at any time. Just say the word.
Diane: Courage! We like that. It is what Plunderers have running through their veins. For example, Wose who is a Warrior, our Heartfriend who fought with humor and love, Nana who came back to us, ML and her love for her Rick, Truman going round two with kicking cancer to the curb, and even Blondie having the good sense to find the HOH. Courage! We love that.
5:28 pm on June 4th, 2014
Golinka: Lay your head and get some rest. Have I mentioned I make a great pillow? I stocked the shelves under the Quilt with Peeps.
5:36 pm on June 4th, 2014
Dawson, such odd weather we’ve been having. We didn’t get lots of spring, or well, maybe we are now. Hope your garden recovers. It started out as a nice sunny day, but got pretty cloudy and overcast.
So over the past few weeks, we’ve been doing more walking. Need to get into shape and do more exercise, so Leno and I have been walking between 1.5 and 3 miles a day for the past couple weeks. I read somewhere that if you do something for 21 days in a row, it becomes a habit, and we’re on day 17. I think. Nice day for it. We always go before breakfast.
Glad the cutting and pasting went all right. I know how draining hospitals can be, even for those of us not under the knife. Believe me, between Alena and Melanie, we’ve had our fair share of time in hospitals.
5:38 pm on June 4th, 2014
Tenzing….peeps?! **PEEPS??!!!?!*** Those things are nasty!

Tupper’s Mama: We remind Nana of that very thing almost daily.
She may WANT to sneak a treat but, with us on guard duty, fat chance of that.
Thieves! Hurray! Today’s the Day! It’s Breakout Time!
BTW: Wes said to tell you the wheelchair races have been the highlight of his stay.
5:48 pm on June 4th, 2014
What, may I ask, is a peep? I thought it stood for “people”.
In that case, Yark.
5:51 pm on June 4th, 2014
Buddy and Leno: Slim Jims are my treat of choice. My Lady says I can’t pass judgement on those with different preferences than me because I eat frozen fish heads.

Tenzing – Mama says she is on her way.

Peeps are those sugary, bright colored marshmallow candies found at Easter time. I thought they were a guilty pleasure of Golinka, but I could be wrong. In any event, I will make sure the Quilt is stocked with whatever comfort food she needs.
5:54 pm on June 4th, 2014
BSD: Tell Wes it was our pleasure. We’d like to make it best 51 out of a 100.

ML: I’ve been told I make a great pillow. I studied all things pillow at my father, Tenzing’s tail. Lay your head and dainty licks.
7:41 pm on June 4th, 2014
Good news from Golinka. Great news from Nana. Soggy news from Dawson. We are glad that the news from Snowhook wasn’t flea infested. Glad Sadie Bear likes her igloo and CHobbit didn’t “Chet” her ear. We gals are hitting the hay early today…puppy romping was exhausting and poor Darah only had time for 2 swims in the fish pond ๐ That Blondie can play hard but she sleeps (and snores) hard too.

ML – Tupper will be back. She escorted Mama to the Tenzing pillow, and Peeps. She is taking pillow lessons from Tenz since she can’t wrap her tail around anyone’s wrist.
You wanna join them? I could give you directions.

I’ll join thank you Gilly. Tomorrow I go talk to the first surgeon about my hernia. Then we shall see. Meanwhile I feel fine. heh.

Barb’nMaggie,
Yup that fawn has been left here for the day. Yesterday when Jim was mowing the front lawn (With the push mower) he scared the fawn. It was hiding between the forsythia and the hedge and he didn’t see it. He didn’t hurt it. Today the Mom moved it to the back yard to the doubtful safety of the metal lawn chairs.

Carpola: I was putting the 2nd coat of paint on the final section of decking and ran out with 5 boards to go. This deck will never be done. I have guest coming for a couple of days and then am heading to FBX for a couple of days and then I bet the weather will turn back from sunny to rainy. Grump!

MPM–Congratulations to Maya’s girl.
Staff and Macy’s Mom–thanks for the deer pictures. I still think they’re really pretty animals (and I’m sure the little fawn wouldn’t eat much of anything).
I’m not sure what to think about the Peeps comment–I’ve always thought of them as a non-food, so I’m assuming joking is going on. On the other had, a Peeps diorama does sound kind of interesting…
