AJ and Jesse on the Trail
“Here’s a photo snapped by Rebecca during the six-hour layover in this weekend’s race in Alaska,” says Spence. “The 200-mile Don Bowers Memorial sled dog race.”
“Won by AJ and his Snowhook team,” Admin says. “The team that this blog community supports emotionally and also helps sponsor. And anyone else can help sponsor them, too.”
“In the picture AJ is tending to Jesse, one of the team. This is how Rebecca describes it. She apologizes for the photo quality – apparently affected by the kind of temperatures they have up there right now: ‘Once he reached the layover, like all mushers should do, AJ tended to the dogs. He prepared food and water, gave meat snacks, gave the dogs straw to lay on, took off their booties, tended to their feet, massaged their muscles, covered the dogs in fleece blankets and finally walked away so they could get uninterrupted rest. I wasn’t allowed to help him—race rules—but I watched as he tended to and cared for each.'”

Welcome Buddy Love’s brother, Loving dude (and by the way To Fetch A Thief isn’t the latest – there’s now The Dog Who Knew Too Much), Iggy (yes!), 3 dudes who’ll have to wait until Sept. for A Fistful of Collars (sorry), Ivan, and the very active outdoorsy dude.

Good Morning All! Got some sleep. Hope AJ and Best Dam Handler Wife were able to get some with all of those dogs in the house!
I see that everyone was busy while I slept. You guys are the best!
And just because I can … I fiddled. Don’t know if it’s any better but here you go.
9:24 am on January 30th, 2012
I also found a youtube channel for the Yukon Quest. They have videos of last year’s race up (obviously they don’t have this years, duh). You can get an idea of how it is for AJ and the team without freezing you patooy off!
http://www.youtube.com/user/TheYukonQuest
Now here’s hoping that someone in the Iditarod decides to do the same thing for that race!

Good morning all.
Rio – good job spilling the beans. Please and thank you for keeping us posted.
T&G – we celebrate your good news anniversary, with all of you, and accept it as encouragement. Dad did have options and we’re grateful he chose surgery. The pathology report showed aggressive cancer, though thank God, no lymph node involvement. He’s been good about recovery, easing back into work. I miss his lap during the day.
Take good care of each other, Everybody.
9:32 am on January 30th, 2012
Good Morning Melanie, and all the rest!
I hope AJ,Rebecca, and the rest of the pack are all sleeping in and snuggly under nice warm blankets!
Rio: I will contribute $125 toward AJ’s food supply.
9:45 am on January 30th, 2012
BluKat!… Great to see your crossed eyes again Kat!…snort!… And good news about your Paw too. Spilling the Beans is what I do best….heh!
Rose!… That is a very generous offer missy!…snort!… Meet me at the water cooler on the SDD and we will discuss it, along with our other pals, Puss N’ Boots and Kirby….wheeze!….The four of us can figure our Buddy System out….Wooooo!
Melanie!….That photo is so much better. I can actually see AJ with his headlamp on….heh!…What a guy! What a great guy he is….snort!
9:49 am on January 30th, 2012
Wow, Rose, that is very generous!
We were gone last evening, so have to go back and catch up.
Snow will be melting here, as temps soar into the upper 40s later today and tomorrow. 5th mildest winter in Illinois history. Good for Barb, bad for many who depend on the snow and cold.
9:54 am on January 30th, 2012
Oh, hey youse guys, there is an IGGY in FOC! 🙂
9:59 am on January 30th, 2012
Rio: Sliding by the water cooler now.
I love the picture of AJ and the team!!!
Generosity is a symbol of love. I love AJ, Rebecca, and the pack. And I would never forget my special, sparkly girl, Belle-Starr.

Good morning all.

10:18 am on January 30th, 2012
And Good Morning All!
10:22 am on January 30th, 2012
Thanks for the video Melanie. Wow! Those dogs really want to run. Those looking back seem to be saying, “Come on! What are you waiting for?”
10:31 am on January 30th, 2012
Good morning all! Love the picture of AJ and Company. He and Rebecca are fine examples of what dog ownership/partnership is all about.
BlueCat – keep purring – it will all be fine. No lymph nodes is the best possible news in a worst possible disease. You just curl up in this here quilt and breathe a little easier.
Bee, Siber, Rose – thank you on behalf of all the Plunderers for your great generosity. This little group of people tied together by a series of books never ceases to amaze us.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop Rio.
So…as of today Mama only has today and tomorrow at CLL. She did get san email from CL this morning that was the beginnings of hints that just maybe Mama could keep hanging out in CLL.
Nope!
10:56 am on January 30th, 2012
February!….Sounds like February is going to be a busy for our Golinka….snort!….She will be working at home and then working at the Loco Ladies place ….heh!…Just watch, when the Begging, Crying and Gnashing of Teeth starts, soft hearted Stinky Mama will not be able to refuse….chorkel!
11:03 am on January 30th, 2012
Riö, we have sent off a SDD to Golinka. Zoë said NO! And I said NO!
11:04 am on January 30th, 2012
Now that the weekend is over and friends and family have all gone home, I plan to just rest. I have two doctor’s appts. on Friday. The first one is the doc who will be checking out my lungs. The second, however, came as a bit of a surprise to me – my dermatologist who called this a.m. to tell me that a biopsy showed I have a dermatitis from gluten.
For 20 years I have had what was called a ‘ wheat intolerance’ so I just didn’t eat much and thought that was fine. Then, a few months ago, Melanie mentioned what happened when YSAS ate wheat. Uh oh. So again I went light on eating wheat. I still didn’t see a reason to stop completely – because I didn’t want to. I still don’t want to.
I’m not celiac but I guess I’m joining the ranks of Melanie & Co. and completely giving up wheat. I may need a 12-step program.
11:11 am on January 30th, 2012
Royals’ Mum – I know you have the resolve to quit and stay quit from CL Land. In case you need it, and I don’t think you do, we’re here for you.
You have so much talent and now a Mud Room with piped-in music. That’s where you belong.
You’ll still be able to entertain us with CL stories for a while yet, I’m sure.
11:13 am on January 30th, 2012
Our mom and pop are starting a 12-week program with Will Clower, the Mediterranean Diet Dude. Mom’s work is offering this and paying for it. They are so excited, because this is not really dieting, but a return to common sense and Real Food. They are cutting out everything with chemical additives…much food to be tossed out at our place. We are excited that they will be getting much healthier.
Mom was already given his book, “The French Don’t Diet Plan”, and is deep into it.
11:17 am on January 30th, 2012
Oh my!
The beans have spilled! I’m in. I love beans.
Thanks for the picture of AJ tending to Jesse during the race and for Melanie’s fiddling.
BlueCat: That is excellent news.
I have to catch up on yesterday’s posts.
11:28 am on January 30th, 2012
Good morning, y’all! Mom’s been puttering around the house, so she’s late getting me on the computer today. And I won’t be able to stay long because she’s going to shut me down and head off to work in a little bit. Sigh.
11:31 am on January 30th, 2012
BlueKat, I’m so glad that the surgery was done!
Beans … I wonder what happened to the extra re-fried beans in the fridge. Sort of scary.
HELP! Is anyone using the Dragon app for iPad? Trying to figure it out for Dan. Going crazy. But not so crazy to go to work for MagPie’s Mom’s or Golinka’s bosses.
11:42 am on January 30th, 2012
Melanie – I have the Dragon app for the iPad, if you mean for dictation and not the game. What problem are you having?
11:44 am on January 30th, 2012
Hope you start feeling better Mollypop.
Good to hear from you Bluecat and glad about the news.
T&G: Say goodbye to CL forever!
12:01 pm on January 30th, 2012
Alice, Got your message from last night about me being up on Snowhook’s blog sponsoring the Rainy Pass checkpoint. Mom is gonna bring me her credit card so I will go over to Snowhook’s blog and officially sign up for Rainy Pass today. YIPPIE!!!
Rio, Rainy Pass is not rainy in the winter because it is at a higher elevation than the rest of the Iditarod Trail. More SNOW!!! It may rain there in the summertime.
Mom and I were thinking about $27,000 being bare bones to run the Iditarod. That amount is really Bare Bones.
All of you, Thank You for helping Snowhook!
12:07 pm on January 30th, 2012
Bluecat, Thank you for letting us know the good news. You and your family have been in my thoughts.
I have complete faith that the Royal’s Mum is going to walk out of CLL forever. She will have all of us to answer to if she doesn’t, but she will do it.
12:17 pm on January 30th, 2012
Videos! We are going to Melanie’s Yukon Quest link later. Thanks for the link and the photo Melanie.
All of you that have already subscribed to the Iditarod Insider:
You can watch videos of last year’s Iditarod on their website. There are two that I remember of AJ…maybe more.
During the race, I always try to keep up with the videos the Iditarod posts every day because if I don’t, I get behind and catching up takes a lot of time.
12:59 pm on January 30th, 2012
Bluecat: Glad to see you, and I’m very thankful to hear the good news about your pop.
SiberH: Look at you sponsoring a checkpoint! I’m twirling for you my sweetie!
1:12 pm on January 30th, 2012
Bluecat, we continue to keep you and your dad in our thoughts.
Rio, thank you for giving all of us the much-needed kick in the b-u-t-t for Snowhook. It will all pay off when we are running along with our team, in our virtual reality.
1:14 pm on January 30th, 2012
MollyPop’s Mom, I’m trying to figure out how to get from memos to Pages. I can get the memo’s to email! 🙂 It’s only taken me all morning and help from the internet..
1:32 pm on January 30th, 2012
Shipping!…I wish we could form a group to knock out that big Shipping Expense…grunt!…The Shipping for the Drop Bags which contain the food, etc…sniff!…Rebecca says that is $1000.00…gah!
2:06 pm on January 30th, 2012
Melanie – Mine is different. I dictate into notes and then hit the icon that’s a line with a down arrow above it. That gives me email, cut and copy options. I don’t know what Pages are.
2:12 pm on January 30th, 2012
Thanks MollyPop’s Mom, I got that far. Pages is the word processing software we put on it.
I can now do the email and then send it to us put it on to pages and then email it back to Dan’s and then open it in pages.
Round about way for sure.
2:22 pm on January 30th, 2012
Fellow Sibers, Use Melanie’s link and then click on the video, “Mike Elllis and his Huskies Arrive”. That is the team of purebred Sibers that came in 8th place in the Yukon Quest last year. I’ll be cheering for them again this year. Mike seems like a really good guy and he has won awards for best dog care.
3:00 pm on January 30th, 2012
Siber Buddy, Thanks for pointing that out. Turns out there were quite a few of Mike Ellis’ team. Our guys looked so darn happy!!! And how about how they immediately lie down and rub their bodies…we do that too!!!
Have you ever been hooked up with a team? We were, but it was with a training cart; not a sled. We were novices and not contributing much to the effort, but we would sure love to do one of those for-real races!
3:02 pm on January 30th, 2012
Siber-H – beautiful animals and beautiful country, by the way. Is the rolling and digging thing in the snow the same way you make holds in your back yard?
3:11 pm on January 30th, 2012
holes – not holds. I don’t have a darn ipaw excuse…
3:18 pm on January 30th, 2012
Fellow Sibers, No, I have never been hooked up with a team, but I am sure it wouldn’t take us long to learn how to do it. I guess THe Hot One could be the lead dog. (be sure and tell her I said that)
Bluecat, Yes, that is the way I start my digging in the yard, but my projects are much more complicated that what Mike’s Huskies are doing. I have the time but Mike’s dogs don’t while on the trail. They are just trying to cool down. I dig for FUN.
3:42 pm on January 30th, 2012
Just digging to cool down. We always thought they were digging to make a hole to stay warm in (sorry Bee).
Barb was out at that stupid party last night and missed Downton, except for the last 10 minutes. What happened to the two guys? I believe William and ? (Matthew or Edward perhaps). We know what happened to William at the end, but what happened to the other guy that he could no longer marry? Please be as explicit as possible.
3:44 pm on January 30th, 2012
Siber, you are never ever going to convince Sasha that she is not Lead Dog. But The Hot One appreciates that you want to follow her. LOL
3:49 pm on January 30th, 2012
I didn’t see last night’s episode of Downton Abbey but won’t it repeat next week?
4:01 pm on January 30th, 2012
I don’t know Bee, does it repeat an hour before the new one?
4:03 pm on January 30th, 2012
MagPie – Severed spinal cord.
4:04 pm on January 30th, 2012
Yes, B. They always repeat last week’s episode prior to this week’s.
We have last night’s on our DVR. We can’t wait to watch it.
4:06 pm on January 30th, 2012
Maggie, we dig to cool down in summer, and to warm up in winter. But we roll like the guys on the video just because it feels so darn good.
4:41 pm on January 30th, 2012
Thanks, Molly’s Mom. That explains why he said the things he said at the ending.
5:07 pm on January 30th, 2012
Thanks, Bee. Robbie arrived safely. I knew y’all would like it.
Howlers – our horse rolls like that, most especially after being groomed. I’m sure you know all about that, though…
5:21 pm on January 30th, 2012
You guys, The long distance Sibers in the video are rolling and digging to cool down because of all the miles they just traveled. They are warmed up Sibers.
Mom is about to weaken and order the DVD’s of Dowton Abbey. A friend has already told her that she will then buy them from her after mom has seen them.
5:33 pm on January 30th, 2012
MollyPopsMom: Hope you are feeling tip-top soon!
5:46 pm on January 30th, 2012
Rose – I’m hungry and there’s nothing to eat. What have you got?
6:26 pm on January 30th, 2012
Bluecat, we most definitely know all about it. Whenever Mom slaves over those horses and has them looking tip-top, they roll in mud or in their shavings. We think they just don’t like to look or smell pretty. We, on the other hand, love to smell pretty, and thats why we find dead critters to roll in.
6:29 pm on January 30th, 2012
We just heard that Shirley McLain is going to be joining Downton Abbey. That is a bit of a surprise!
6:42 pm on January 30th, 2012
I wondered where OleyHowlers was going with that! Don’t smell nice because they don’t roll in dead animals. snicker
6:57 pm on January 30th, 2012
Our dog dish and email runneth over…
BSD, Wookie, Rio, Charris, Howlers: Please check your SDD.

Well, Zoë is sick again. Poor thing, she’s got the latest bug going around. 🙁
I’m headed upstairs after I do everything down here!
You guys have a great time!

I fear we will never get caught up! We did see Rio’s announcement from yesterday. It makes sense to go with cash donations instead of an another auction or restocking the store. Whatever we can do to help we are in.
Rio, Rose, G&BB have a group. Anyone else? We here would like to do something for the dogs…food and things they will need on the trail.
Pardon the fuzziness, but out of sync here. Will pick up the pace again by tomorrow – Bear

Dawson, I just got back from work. Check your SDD please.
Bear Spirit, I will email you something in just a minute.
8:56 pm on January 30th, 2012
Rebecca, Thanks for reminding us of the great significance of our pick.
Goodnight all.
9:00 pm on January 30th, 2012
Dawson!…Check your SDD!…heh! (just kidden) ….Speaking of Dawson, we received a little tattered hard-covered book today in the mail from Dawson. She spend a small fortune sending it. What a surprise!…snort!… This book was supposedly coming to us from Bear after he had his paws all over it…heh!…So imagine our bafflement! AbbieTheKat did say something, but we thought she was just bluffing to make us feel better about being snubbed on the whole book trail…gruffle!
9:06 pm on January 30th, 2012
Rio,
Dawson found the book in her mile high pile of stashed books. She though you were such a sad little puppy having to wait and wait for the book that she took pity on you.
Snicker
Way to fake her out buddy.
Oh, and Bear, check your SDD.
9:21 pm on January 30th, 2012
Staff!…It cost her $10.00 to send that little red book to me….sniff!… Gosh knows how much that is in Canadian Mountie Dollars….wuffle!…I never meant for her to do that….sniff!…I hope she doesn’t expect me to send it back to her…heh!
9:27 pm on January 30th, 2012
I think….she said you could keep it. But we better wait for her to be sure. Sisters sometimes screw things up you know.
9:30 pm on January 30th, 2012
Red!….I love little Red Tattered Books…heh!…There is no way she is getting it back…sniff!…She will have to come to Colorado and steal it out from under me and all my baseball toys…wheeze!
9:31 pm on January 30th, 2012
What!!!
Rio: You got the book already! This genuine Anti Marauding Goat Charm that I got from T&G’s mum really works great. I did pay for air mail because it was only 1 dollar more expensive. Silly Dawg. That is Canadian dollars. Our Post Office doesn’t accept US dollars. If I wanted to have tracking it would’ve cost double that…can you believe it? I do not want the book back. As the package says…it’s a present for Rio. You might save the stamp, though. Just in case you sent something to me or Staff in the future, you can send it along as a present.
I am way behind on the blog. I have too many things happening right now so that I’m going in circles…twirling, but not in a good way.
9:49 pm on January 30th, 2012
Stamp!….uh oh…sniff!…I think someone threw the packaging in the trash and her mother is notorious for taking the trash out each and every night right after supper…gulp!… I will double check and make sure the stamp is truly gone…wuffle!
9:50 pm on January 30th, 2012
BTW!…..THANKS DAWSON!!!…..Wooooo!… Your are the Dawgs Meow!…snorkel!
9:59 pm on January 30th, 2012
Alice: Ask Staff to check her SDD for my last message. Bear has retired for the evening. sniff.
10:00 pm on January 30th, 2012
Hey! I just saw a dog I thought was Sam up on top…but really it was “Snickerdoodle”. Like Sam but without the je-ne-say-qwah that Sam posseses.
Rio: No worries.
Eleanor! I sure have enjoyed having Eleanor up there at the top of the page but it is almost time for a new face. Ahem…I’m available.
10:02 pm on January 30th, 2012
Maskers!….Your buddy Bear pretty much Eats, Mumbles a few words on the Blog and then Sleeps, doesn’t he?…heh!snort!
10:16 pm on January 30th, 2012
Rio: Yes. Well, you know how bears are, especially in the winter months.
10:23 pm on January 30th, 2012
Winter!…Has got to END!…grunt!…Right after the Iditarod…heh!
Bed!….Well, it is very early here, but someone has been fighting a headcold all day now…sniffle!…She drank that Airborne stuff this morning and that helped her get through the day at the busy-place, but now it is trying to catch hold again…grunt!…So she is going upstairs to bed and so am I…sniff!…And so will Beau because he is already sawing logs and needs to be in his cold hard bed right now…heh!….Goodnight All! …Thanks again Dawson! You are one fine Canadian!….wooooo!
10:28 pm on January 30th, 2012
I’m going to catch up on Downton Abbey.

10:32 pm on January 30th, 2012
I left work early today because the weather started to turn and the roads were getting bad. I stopped on the way home to do laundry. Just as I was loading clothes into one of the washers I saw what I thought was a clump of lint in the washer. Nope. It was a dead mouse. Eek and ick!
Dawson: Have you, umm, recieved any packages from my neck of the woods, yet?
Charris: You are welcome to visit the kennel any time. Let me know when you plan to be in the area. After Iditarod, we’ll have some down time before we send the dogs southeast for the summer. It would be great to be able to take you on a ride.
I feel behind today on updating Snowhook’s blog with all the dibs being called on checkpoints. I will do my best to update it tonight. I had the thought of doing first come, first serve if more than one person was interested in the same checkpoint. It hasn’t come up, yet but I thought it only fair if it does.
Thank you to each of youse for rallying around Snowhook yet again.
Yesterday, as a true act of love of devotion I went to the video-slash-liquor store in Willow and got AJ a soda at his request. Changing out of my fleece long underwear that was serving double duty as my pajamas seemed far too much trouble. I turned to my latest treasure—coveralls, courtesy of Dawson. Staff: Did you have anything to do with a lucky penny I found in the pocket?
Melanie: Thanks for fixing up the photo I sent to SQPA. I should have dolled it up a bit, but I was so excited to send it to him that I didn’t give it a second thought.
10:42 pm on January 30th, 2012
Good luck to you know who on her last day at you know where. We will need a report on how she said goodbye to CL.
Check mailed to Snowhook this morning. It was only -33 this a.m. so it felt very nice. I also noticed that when I drove home it was light (yay); it didn’t last long but daylight is gaining these days.
My weight advisor and I went over my food dairy because I had been stuck at -46 pounds for three weeks. We found the problem so I am now back on track. There was a vegetable I was supposed to have only once or twice a week and I was having it much more often. Getting closer to by goal.
10:49 pm on January 30th, 2012
Evenin everyone, we feel a little out of the loop, but just wanted to check in so no one thinks we fell in a crack.
10:59 pm on January 30th, 2012
Heads up everyone.
Dawson, Bear Spirit Dog, AbbietheKitty, Alice M. Johnson. Staff and Masquers are working out a deal to make a huge donation for (officially) booties, but really for anything that the dogs need for the race. We are up to 750.00 and our goal is 1000.00. 1000 booties at 1$ each are what the team needs for the big race.
It is good to have a dream isn’t it?
Anyway if anyone wants to go in with us let me know.
Staff

Youse guys certainly all are wonderful, awesome, generous, good hearted and loyal. Snowhook is lucky to have you, you are lucky to have Snowhook. Boy, when Mama picks friends, she really gets good ones!
Today was very hard at CLL. There are some really good members, lovely women who, like the Plunderers have rallied to support special fund raisers and charity events. Many of them were there today, just finding out Mama was leaving. There were lots of tears on both sides, lots of hugs and many requests for Mama to stay. One lady yelled at CL demanding to know what she had “done” to Mama and telling her that she had to “do something” to make her stay.
Well, Mama will miss those ladies…..but (excuse us for a quick twirl here) TOMORROW IS HER LAST DAY!!!!!
And then she and Dad are going out for dinner to celebrate!

Hi Macy.
G’day to Liz.
Goodnight all.
11:09 pm on January 30th, 2012
T&G: I couldn’t agree with you more about the crowd I run with now. I hadn’t realized how stressed I had been about getting AJ to the starting line until today. The Plunderers have made my burden lighter once again.
Dawson, Bear Spirit Dog, AbbietheKitty, Alice M. Johnson., Staff, and Masquers: I don’t know what to say or where to start—thank you.
Charris: Thank you as well. It was 0 tonight when I go home. It feels tropical.
Macy: It would be difficult to explain to Mr. Redbone Hound if you fell in a crack on our watch. Please stay clear of all crevases.

11:24 pm on January 30th, 2012
Staff: I agree—it seems to be working. I put it back in the pocket I found it in for safe keeping. There, it will stay.
Sleepy? I don’t feel like I’ve sufficiently woken up from the race. I do hope that Zoe and Rio get rid of those bugs they caught soon.
11:28 pm on January 30th, 2012
Yes, good health and a part of the quilt going out to Zoe and Melanie. We all need a little quilt tonight I think.
I’m heading to bed now too.
Night all.

I’m wondering if all the bugs that seem to be going around on this here blog, it might not be a bad idea to invest in flea collars. Wait, no…that’s the wrong kind of bug.
Bluecat: If I remember correctly, you’re acquainted with Jamie and Claire? I’ve been meaning to tell you that AJ gave me her latest book, The Scottish Prisoner. I’m only 100 pages in, but so far it’s true to a certain red-heided highlander.
12:43 am on January 31st, 2012
AJ just arrived home with many surprises in the mail. We received photos from: BSD and Masquers, B’s Brandy, and Siber-H, you handsome devil.
