A Walk on D-Day
Bernie and I go for a walk. A walk is always good. Yesterday I found a great stick. Did we have fun with that or what?
But today Bernie’s kind of quiet. We come to the big flat rock in the canyon, up above our house, always looking so small from here; but I can hear the water splashing in the swan fountain. Bernie sits down. Me, too. He gives me a pat.
“Seventieth anniversary of D-Day, big guy,” he says. “Some of those men are still around, but the numbers are dwindling. Important to remember them.”
Not sure who we’re remembering, plus numbers are involved, so I just sit there and feel Bernie remembering.
Ronald Reagan’s Pointe du Hoc speech (written by Peggy Noonan):

Good morning, everyone! Mom says she remembers President Reagan saying that and that it is hard to believe it was 30 years ago. Again, numbers are involved so we’ll go along with mom remembering.
We are in a “puppy free” zone this morn since the DDD and the Boarder took Blondie to go fishing…good luck!
Have a French fry Friday 🙂

Good Morning all. We second all the d-day remembrances. I myself am a little hazy on the details, and mom is having trouble putting words together this morning. She is off to the retail shop and I am off to yard investigation.

Macy: Funny! (you behave yourself out in the yard now.)
Fern: A happy sqawking birthday to all of youse but especially to you, you, you!
10:23 am on June 6th, 2014
HRH B, mom has never tried it. She thinks it is red and in the past reds have triggered migraines 🙁
Fern, the POP sends along squawks and preens.
We have been “helping” in the garden and know know the difference between Staff’s and mom’s. Staff’s is weed-free and perfect. Mom’s is weedy and imperfect.

Fern and her Sistas – Happy Hatch Day!
10:33 am on June 6th, 2014
Staff, we just read a very interesting article (and sad) about Monarchs in our Friend of the Earth magazine. They are experiencing the same plight as the honeybees, and they are linking it to the neonics. They are the canary in the coalmine! We better wake up before it is too late!
And to Fern, Bawk bawk, baa-gawk to you!
Off for our busy day.
10:46 am on June 6th, 2014
Macy, silly MinPin! Of course they are not at our door to murder us. They are all at our door to give me me me all the love and attention (aka food) that I deserve!
11:15 am on June 6th, 2014
Honoring soldiers, remembering the sacrifices of so many, and regretting the pettiness of mankind that causes war.
Hoping that our future generations do not have to add more dates to the calendar of remembrance.
Happy Hatch Day to Howling Chickens. Good medical news day to Staff. No migraine day to HOH Mom.
And Macy – really? Are you sure? Cuz some of them look like serial killers (or at least biscuit thieves) to us.
11:18 am on June 6th, 2014
CALLIE JUST CHASED A BEAR OUT OF OUR BACK YARD! Woo Hoo Callie!
Macy – see??????
11:22 am on June 6th, 2014
HoH Hahahahaha. The talk of Staff’s garden being weed free is hilarious. Why do you think all her photo’s are from a distance? Also, it is much later up here and the weeds are just starting to pop. Trust me. Once we get into summer there will be weeds galore! Once the mosquitoes come out I pretty much stop weeding. I only hope I can get a head start on them this year.
Fern Happy B-day
Dad was working for the military at MIT (on early computer type programs) when D-Day occurred. He was 20 years old. After that he was sent to basic training and sent across to help invade Japan. He was halfway there on a troop ship when the bomb was dropped in August of 1945.
11:24 am on June 6th, 2014
Callie knows Macy was right. Zeus is a goose!
Off to get a loverly massage and talk to my friend Loretta who is going to Alaska on the 21st of June. So jealous!

Ahem – we have a message to relay to you from our beloved Zoe.
The time and date for our Dear Friend’s Memorial Gathering has been set.
On Saturday, July 26th at 2 pm, people will be gathering at Zoe’s house to share love and laughter and thoughts and memories of our Friend and her father, both on the other side of the Bridge, along with so many of their beloved puppies.
Zoe’s grandchildren will be hosting the potluck picnic gathering which will continue through the afternoon and end with a late night bonfire. They welcome anyone who wishes to join them in celebrating two lives that meant so much to us all, that left us much too soon.
We know that many of you are too far away geographically speaking to be able to make the trip for this occasion. But we do have an alternative suggestion for you, if you wish to participate.
On the afternoon of the 26th, please post on this here blog your thoughts, your memories and your love for our Friend. You may even want to post what your virtual, and gluten free contribution to the potluck dinner would be.
One of the grandchildren will keep an eye on the blog, and will read your posts to the people gathered in the back yard. That way, even if you cannot be there in person, you can be there at this Celebration of Life.
Please mark your calendar now for the date – July 26th at 2 pm till late night – and post the thoughts that you would like Zoe and her family to see.
Thanks.
sniff, sniff

Thank you, T&G for sharing this information . sob
12:43 pm on June 6th, 2014
T.C., How are things going with you and Zeusikov?
12:51 pm on June 6th, 2014
Chet – thanks for the goose-bump-post this morning.
Mom’s dad was 21, in California waiting to be shipped to Japan. He was a pilot/navigator in the Army Air Corps. The war was over before he got there.
Dad’s dad was 28, in California recovering from burns he suffered when the LST he commanded was sunk by kamikaze in December 1944. He regained the use of his hands though he wasn’t supposed to.
May we never take freedom for granted.
Oh, T&G. Remember the scene in Return of the Jedi – those beyond the bridge were restored and watched the celebration? The Raven and Our Friend will surely be near that day. Sniff.
Take care, Everybody.
1:06 pm on June 6th, 2014
Blukat: Thank you for the reminder. sniff.
purrs & hugs.

Wose, I still do not trust that dude. No I do not. I mostly keep to myself when he is around. I do sometimes come out because I need my loving. He watches me!!!
1:17 pm on June 6th, 2014
Steve was here last night, to talk about some sort of training I am supposed to do for Mom and Pop. I am not sure I got all of the facts straight. He also invited me to his special dog park this weekend or next weekend. That sounds like fun. I hope Mom and Pop behave themselves.
The entire time the poor guy was trying to give me tips, all Mom was worried about was Pints for Pups, whatever that is. She kept insisting that she needs to know if I can go. Whatever.
1:39 pm on June 6th, 2014
BlueKat – Mama says to send you a special thank you. Gramp and the Storyteller say thanks too. You have a very special Mom, you know that?
1:53 pm on June 6th, 2014
Geeze, mom leaves for a couple of hours for the library and lunch and look at all the news! We will think about what to say on 7/26 and watch that mom behaves.

T&G & Zoe: I will be there in spirit. Sniff. Thank you for including us Plunderers.
Happy Hatch Day to the Chickens!

Staff — Not sure if this ever came up before, but my dad was also on a troop ship in the Pacific heading to Japan when the bomb was dropped (it would be amazing if it were the same ship). Following that, he spent about 6 months on Okinawa before being shipped back stateside.
T&G — thanks for the info from Zoe; we will be there either in body or spirt too.

Rio I hope you have enough food for a prolonged stay in the basement. We are having a misty day today. Staff even went out in it to pull quack. She muttered something about having to keep up appearances to impress some hounds.

Callie, you da dawg! Ok, I know that urban speak seems a bit silly from this little suburban dog, but I want to be prepared if I ever wind up in the slammer again. Mom keeps telling me that is what will happen if I take any more unauthorized walkabouts. I just be cool and hang wid my homies.
Bwak bwak bwaaaak, birdies. Y’all are frying size now. Oh, maybe that was inappropriate. That is what Grandpa used to say when kids were growing up.

TAADAAA
Announcing that Staff (me) and Mr.Staff (him) have rescheduled their tickets for the 2015 Hobbit Hotel/Iditarod extravaganza. Whooo Hoooo!
After intensive research Staff figured out that the 2015 Iditarod starts on March 7 and restarts on March 8 2015. So she is scheduled to arrive in Anchorage on Monday March 2nd and to return to Minneapolis on Tuesday March 10th. (This time no Midnight starts from AK. She figured that out after last time. And also an extra day on each end just in case.)
Now to go tell Mr.Staff.
I had sort of forgotten that I had to reschedule those tickets until I talked to my friend Loretta who will be meeting the Hobbit on the longest day of the year. Sniff. I am jealous but not enough to change the tickets and miss the Iditarod.
I AM SO PSYCHED!!! oh, sorry….sniff

Today is the last day for Anchorage Alaska to have a civil twilight that has a beginning and an ending. Civil twilight is usually about 20 minutes after the official sunset or before sunrise when a lot of sunlight is still coming over the earth. The center of the sun is 6° below the horizon of the earth. Starting tomorrow in Anchorage it is 24 hours of civil twilight. There is an official sunrise and sunset but the sun is never more than 6° below the horizon. Fortunately the Hobbit Hotel has good window shade coverage since it won’t get dark outside.

Night all, been a long day.
9:59 pm on June 6th, 2014
I was at a lunch meeting yesterday. As it is summer in Alaska, many tourists were out and about and the restaurant was packed. I was facing the window. As the meeting progressed over lunch, I looked out the window. Where the sidewalks were once crowded, they were now empty except for one person. Across the street, I saw a woman I recognized. She was wearing a hat and team colors instead of purple, but had a familiar build and profile. I tried to concentrate on the meeting, but couldn’t keep from looking out the window as she continued down the sidewalk. My first reaction was to run out and call her name, “Melanie! Melanie!” As much as the person looked like our Heartfriend, it was her spirit and energy that struck me most. Soon, the woman walked out of sight. I miss our Heartfriend everyday.
Golinka: Thank you for letting us know about the celebration.
I ran an idea by Golinka some time ago, but now we know the date of the celebration I will put it out on this here blog. I am no way talented like our Heartfriend when it comes to making videos, but I had the thought of doing a slideshow of the Plunderers, both two and four legged, our meeting and greetings, and maybe the pictures you sent when she requested photos to hang in her room.
10:03 pm on June 6th, 2014
SnowBella, what a fantastic idea! Makes us smiley and misty at the same time.
