A Special Gift
“Whoa,” says Spence. “When I went to bed the Nats – team I was rooting for – had it in the bag.”
“This is baseball, remember?” Admin says. “No having it in the bag in baseball. But to cheer you up, how about we post a photo of the lovely gift Gus and BooBear gave you at Murder By The Book in Houston?”
“Sounds good. I’ve now got it up in a nice spot in the office.”
“It’s like the Plunderers are redecorating!”

Good Morning All!
Chet, Spence, and Admin, Love the blocks that Gus and BooBear gave you!
Maybe if I ask G&BB nicely…..
Cold day here in Westchester. Love it!
Prof and I are going to see the play “Chaplin” today.
Good day all!
9:18 am on October 13th, 2012
None of my blogs that I posted later in the evening are on the blog. WAAAAAAA!
9:36 am on October 13th, 2012
Good morning Rose and Wose.
Love the blocks! Gosh, Barb feels neglectful that she went to the Naperville signing empty handed. G & B, you mom is so thoughtful. How is she liking Dewey?
Off to do some errand and then up to the lake for lunch with Kelly and clan.
It is cold and rainy here. Maybe strong storms later. At least we are not living in terror of those winds anymore. BBL

Good morning! It is very cold here this morning (97), with heavy frost on the ground. The pellet stove is cranking.
We love the blocks from G&BB. And we really love the idea of the Plunderers redecorating Spencer’s place. heh heh.
Wookie, sorry about your team. That has to hurt bad. Next year.
9:46 am on October 13th, 2012
Oops that was supposed to say 27, not 97 …we wish.
It is a beautiful, clear Fall morning though.
9:56 am on October 13th, 2012
Redecorating?!? Pondering….Heh! Heh! (Uttered in the tone of a witch’s cackle.)
Good morning all.
10:21 am on October 13th, 2012
Thanks, Oley H. It was sad but at least my friend Rio kept me company and tried to cheer me up afterwards. And as Tom Hanks said “In a League of Their Own,” there is no crying in baseball. Next year will be better, I’m sure. But I think I probably need to root for Wolfie’s Giants now.
Wookie

Wookie and dad, I am sorry your team lost. Take pride in knowing that the team played AWESOME baseball this year, and came as far as they did.
Even though the Yankees won, they blew a 10 game lead, and were hanging on by their fingernails these last few weeks.
I say, GO NATIONALS in 2013!!!!!!
11:00 am on October 13th, 2012
I couldn’t stay up last night. But reading the blog from last night is better than reading the sports pages. I felt the highs, the lows, and the drama of the game.
Sob.
Sorry Wookie. Maybe next year eh?
11:00 am on October 13th, 2012
It seems to me that there is a great deal of crying in baseball. Just saying…..
11:08 am on October 13th, 2012
Good Day Plunderers. But it’s a sad one in Mudville for Wookie’s team.
Gus&BooBear: We see Spence loves your special blocks. You did good!
Barb&Magpie: Empty handed here also. It was hard to follow a class act like Gus&BooBear.
What’s that wicked cackling I hear in the blog background?
B? Is that you?
11:08 am on October 13th, 2012
Laughing here, B.Stover . .
Spence, love the blocks. I also love the three windows. Do you write facing the windows or away from the windows?
In the mid 20’s here this morning. Killing frost? The tomatoes say yes, the asparagus says no . . my allergies say NO! sniff, sniff, sneeze . .
11:18 am on October 13th, 2012
Barb,
I don’t know where you are in Illinois anymore but here is a map of the Whooping Crane Migration route.

If they are near you at all it is an amazing and inspiring sight to view one of their flights.

Wookie, I am sorry the Nationals lost. sob, sob, sob, Of all the baseball teams, I thought the Nationals could go all the way.
I’m glad I slept through the bad part.
The Nationals were a great team all season and will come back strong next year.
Love those blocks! They are pretty.
11:50 am on October 13th, 2012
Stover!…heh!snort!heh!…I almost laughed out loud about the crying remark, which is amazing because I never laugh and I still feel like sob!sob!sobbing! over Wookie’s team losing…snort!
11:51 am on October 13th, 2012
Blocks!…Hey, those blocks are way cool. I wonder what other words we could spell with them?…snort!
11:51 am on October 13th, 2012
Love those blocks too!
GO GIANTS!!!!!!!!
11:53 am on October 13th, 2012
Words!…”Got Teeth”…heh!…But I used the ‘T’ twice…huffle!…No fair when playing blocks.
11:53 am on October 13th, 2012
Cold day here. Was 28 degrees when we took our first walk this morning. I’d say

the growing season is over for this year. Did get out a couple of times to see the leaves. We had a spectacular fall but didn’t get the brilliant colors that we usually
have. Here’s one shot that we took looking over the Kinzua Reservoir near here (Bradford, PA). Took it early in the week. Then the rain and the winds came and
knocked down most of the leaves. It’s beginning to look like fall/winter. Today when we left the house the ground was white with a pretty heavy frost and my dad had to scrape the windshield of his car for the third time this fall.

My point has been made by all of the sobbing going on here.

Beautiful picture TYB.
Staff, Thanks for the map. The closest they would be to us is Winnebago county, which is about 1 1/2 hours drive. We are in McHenry County, which is the second county west of Lake Michigan.
12:15 pm on October 13th, 2012
Before I forget again: I remembered that RCA Victor didn’t die of rabies but of distemper.
12:15 pm on October 13th, 2012
Staff, Looks like they have already stopped in Winnebago, and also LaSalle and will be heading towards middle of the state, although they said weather would prevent much progress today.
Have you ever seen them up close and personal?
12:34 pm on October 13th, 2012
ok, Wolfie
Go Giants!
I don’t care what Tom Hanks said. He never met some of us. sob, sob, sob
Beautiful photo, TYB
12:53 pm on October 13th, 2012
Ah, Wookie, You are being very brave through all this, but we think that was a tear running down your dad’s check. The big playoff between the Yankees and Nationals is not to be…this year.
Staff: Great link.
Tyb: A magnificient picture.

Greetings friends –
Barb-we are so happy for you that you get to see the grands and family so much more nowadays. How delightful for you.
Bee – that was a good one! You get an extra piece of pie for that.
Gus and BooBear – those blocks are beautiful. What a nice gift.
To all the dissapointed baseballs fans – our sympathy
We have had a bit of excitement here. Our roomate Callie (Gramp’s dog) went to the groomer the other day, and he found a largish lump on her leg. We took her to our v-e-t immediatley. They diagnosed it as “mass cell cancer” and told us Callie had 3 months to live without surgery, and 9 months if we did surgery. But they also said that the size and location of the tumor was too tricky for them, and they would call in a special surgeon. They called us back the next day and demanded that we make a decision right then and there about having surgery on this coming Tuesday. And if he said no to Tuesday, then she would just have to die, because the surgeon wouldn’t be able to be back until after Thanksgiving, and then the tumor would be too far gone to remove.

Gramp was beside himself. Callie is his heart, and the v-e-t people were not being encouraging.
So, Mama said its time for a second opinion. There is a very good animal emergency hospital not too far away that is open 24/7. Mama and Gramp took Callie there last night.
These folks were wonderful. They said this was a small tumor, and that yes, it MIGHT be fatal, but they did xrays and bloodwork and said there was no sign of the cancer metastisizing yet. They also said their surgeon could do her Tuesday IF we want. Or Wednesday. Or Thursday. Or whenever. They did encourage us to move quickly as this type of cancer does tend to be aggressive, but if it is removed before it spreads, the cancer is 100% cured. And they feel there is a good chance that we did catch it in time. They will send the tumor out for pathology of course, but they gave Gramp hope that his beloved puppy is not under a death sentence.
So, please keep a good thought for this beautiful, gentle giant white doggie on Tuesday. Lets all pray for good pathology reports.
Thanks.

Callie was a special part of my visit to the Royals this summer. Callie is in my prayers.

Callie is beautiful.

That is a Beautiful photo of Gramp’s Callie.
Royals: Prayers for Callie’s complete recovery. Hugs for Gramp who is going through a very stressful time.
2:39 pm on October 13th, 2012
Tupper&Gilly: We have a feeling a new v*e*t is in your near future.
2:41 pm on October 13th, 2012
The emergency hospital of which T&G speaks is very good.
For those of you who were here remember Mr. Greedy Guts that is where we rushed him with he had the aspiration pneumonia. They were kind and helpful and did a great job.
The Pack is VERY glad that the hospital will be doing the surgery.
2:44 pm on October 13th, 2012
Callie and Gramp are in our prayers. She is beautiful and very gentle looking.
I have a very good feeling about this emergency clinic. We have two great ones like that here.
2:45 pm on October 13th, 2012
Surgery!..Wow, I leave for a nap and when I come back someone is having surgery…grunt!…Sounds like Stinky Mama made a good choice about going to the second V-e-t….wheeze!
3:51 pm on October 13th, 2012
Callie is an especially good friend of mine. I and my pack (4- legged and 2-legged) are sending positive thoughts her way. Love you, Callie.
4:31 pm on October 13th, 2012
T&G — Tell Callie that everything will be okay. I had a mass cell tumor removed about six years ago, and the surgery was very successful with no recurrence ever. I even got to wear some of my dad’s knit shirts for a while after the surgery (I think it was to keep me from licking the wound, which of course I would never have done in any event – the shirts were a better alternative to that darn collar thing they can sometimes make you wear).
In any event, I know that Callie will be just fine.
Wookie
4:50 pm on October 13th, 2012
Youse guys are the BEST! Thanks for all the positive thoughts and good wishes.
BearSpiritDog – we have already contacted a new v-e-t for regular stuff, and had all of our records transferred over there.
Our old v-e-t was very good. Not a warm and fuzzy kind of guy, but he knew his stuff. He retired and sold the practice. The new v-e-t-s are both about 12 years old, just out of school and very apt to think zebras instead of horses when they hear hoofbeats.
Wookie – Gramp was VERY happy to hear your story, especially the t-shirt part. He mentioned something about getting some kids’ tube socks and cutting the toes off to make leg bandages for Callie.
Kat and Howlers’s Mom and Bella – Callie sends snuffles and head bumps. She wants you all to come back and visit.
Gramp says any Plunderer is always welcome at this here house.

Frozen! I joined AJ and the team on a training run this morning. I was grateful for the insulated coveralls Noswad sent me, let me tell you. I was, however, quickly reminded why I don’t train dogs anymore; it is very hard on my back. Junior was in the team and did a great job, and I am pleased to say, Fritz, son of Bridger, was in the lead position today for the first time. He led like a champ over ice and through a culvert, up and down hills.
5:55 pm on October 13th, 2012
Junior!…Rio Jr. was on the team?…snort!snort!…I just know that guy will make it to the Iditarod next March…woooooo!
5:56 pm on October 13th, 2012
Wow! Junior in the crew and Fritz lead dog! Fantastic.
(Bella, as one who is using her cane again, be careful of your back)
6:05 pm on October 13th, 2012
Rio: Junior’s ear have a way of flipping and flipping when he runs that is different than the rest of the team. He must get that from the pug side of the family.
Melanie: Good advice especially since between the two of us, we only have one cane. ;).
6:10 pm on October 13th, 2012
Melanie!…Why is Melanie using a cane again…grump!…What did she over-do this time?…huffle!
6:13 pm on October 13th, 2012
Rio: I think the easier question to answer is what didn’t Melanie over do?
6:13 pm on October 13th, 2012
We went further east on Long Island this morning for some quality camera time. Lake Ronkonkoma was beautiful this morning but not much fall color yet.
6:33 pm on October 13th, 2012
Melanie: What happened that you have to use the cane?
6:33 pm on October 13th, 2012
Great Photo Terry,
Reminds me that I took one one morning in September and meant to post it.
7:03 pm on October 13th, 2012
Wow! Some great pictures on the blog!
T&G: Sending strong prayers and loving thoughts to Callie and Gramp. Callie is a beautiful dog. She looks very gentle.
Melanie: Why are you using a cane?
7:16 pm on October 13th, 2012
T&G – I met the beautiful Callie (and Gramp also). She is gentle and oh so beautiful. Your Mum did the right thing and I have a good feeling about it being caught in time.
7:20 pm on October 13th, 2012
We have been gone all afternoon. Sorry to hear about Gramps and Callie, but we know it is going to be OK. Strongest prayers going out to them.
Beautiful pictures!

Melanie: Listening to our friends Tupper and Gilly the last few days we think that cane could come in handy.
7:39 pm on October 13th, 2012
Staff and Terry: Beautiful photos!

The rents are in winter-prep mode. They just now finished mowing grass…can you believe when they finished, although already late feeding us, they decided to sit in the barn with a beer. We are pretty ticked off, except for Meashka, who is too busy cleaning peanut butter out of Kat’s Monster Mouth toy.
So tomorrow, they must put up all those awful heavy wooden storm windows. They were hoping to get to start that dreaded chore today, but they had too many other chores to do first. Winter-Prep is very busy on this here farm.
Bella, loved the Fall training pics on FB. We are getting very excited for race season!

Okay, okay . . . The Cane
After hearing about the “producer” I decided to go to that place in NY with my cane and do a “B.Stover”. The Pack came with me. I had to ride with the windows down because the Pack seems to contributing to Global Climate Change and by the time we got there, I was cold and drenched in drool.
Mattie and Rose, using the very special Wöökie developed tracking device found the “producer”. The “producer” was trying to tell another vender how wonderful this one area was to put up their tent and that thousands of people would come by this hole in the wall.
Using the Commander Riö approved stealth approach, we began to surround the “producer”. Things were going according to plan. Each of the Pack started tightening the circle prepared to grab some pant leg . . .
When Franklin let off a big contribution to Global Climate change and the “producer” and the marks keeled over in a faint!
I rushed over to see if they were going to be okay or have to be driven to the hospital in an Element with Newfs contributing to the Global Climate change, when I tripped over Mac and Patsy and landed upside down.
The entire Pack were very concerned and sat on me and licked my face. My back hasn’t been the same since.
8:21 pm on October 13th, 2012
On the other paw . .
It could just be that all the stress and allergies have inflamed my arthritis and that things are improving.
Pondering . . .
Naw, I like the other one better.

This one is for Prof B.Stover.

I am cheering for the Yankees.

Prayers for Callie and Gramps. Buh Bye old v-e-t.
Memorial service for BIL was today. Remembering a good man gone too soon.
Watching the NASCAR race and watching mom finish up a quilt for sissy.
Saw some frost on the pumpkin yesterday when I was out for my morning constitutional. It rained here most of the day but I was nice and warm inside with my mom.
Mom is almost down 40 pounds since May. She did a lot of “maintaining” during the summer, but she is hoping to be down another 10 by Halloween.
9:13 pm on October 13th, 2012
Forty!…Wow!…Thats way more than two….heh!…That is a huge accomplishment. Someone keeps telling me I need to drop a few pounds and I keep forgetting to listen…heh!
Tigers!…Dawson, Stover and I will be rooting for the Tigers tonight….sniff!…Well, maybe not Stover, but I know she would rather the Tigers win than the Yankees…grunt!…Dawson is busy, but if she wasn’t busy she would be watching and rooting for her team right now…huffle!
9:19 pm on October 13th, 2012
Good one, Melanie.
The O. Howlers are working like dogs to prepare for winter. Work on the farm is never ending…except for the occasional break for beer. Heh.
No more of that for Barb and Maggie…unless, of course, you call shopping hard work. smirk.
Jasper: How in Dog’s name does your mom do it? The delicious meals she cooks can not be a weight-watchers friend.

10:27 pm on October 13th, 2012
Score!…Tigers up by 3 ta Nuthin’…heh!…But I keep remembering what Staff told me about those Yankees one night…sniff!…She said they were “Sneaky” and you have to watch out!…wheeze!
10:39 pm on October 13th, 2012
I wonder which is flatter. Rio’s head or the tire on the dog truck? On a trip into town, AJ and Tenzing only got about a ten miles out before getting a flat tire. The new spare was the wrong size. Another musher stopped to help. AJ turned the truck around and limped back home. The other musher was kind enough to follow AJ home. I joined the caravan when I saw it on my way to do laundry. Amidst a snow storm that hasn’t stopped since it started, AJ is outside grumbling and growling and swearing at the tire.
10:43 pm on October 13th, 2012
Giant!….I’m betting the Giant(s) will win the tire battle!…snort!…Was the other Musher famous by any chance?..sniff!…I hate hearing about snow already. That stuff just gets me down…grump!
10:47 pm on October 13th, 2012
Fun!…I’m watching the Yankees lose right now…heh!heh!…This is fun!fun!fun!…sniff!…But I keep hearing Staff in my ear saying how Sneaky the are and how they can get you when you are least expecting it…gasp!…Go Tigers!
10:52 pm on October 13th, 2012
Is it just me or is winter making an early appearance this year? And, Bella, What are you doing out in a snowstorm? Laundry or no laundry it isn’t safe.
10:52 pm on October 13th, 2012
Rio: The musher who helped isn’t famous, but he did say several other mushers passed by when they were trying to change the tire. Perhaps one of them was famous.
10:54 pm on October 13th, 2012
Masquers: I agree with you. I was slidding all over. Seeing the dog truck with a flat tire was the excuse I was looking for to turn around and head for home. Laundry will have to wait another day.

11:06 pm on October 13th, 2012
Rio: “I am not,” she lied.
11:13 pm on October 13th, 2012
Rebecca!…Did you per-chance notice that the Howlers Maw did heed my advice and took an Airborn when she first felt ill? Now she can happily sit in a barn and drink beer because she was not sick for days and days which turn into weeks…grunt!…Have you had your Airborn yet Miss-Missy?..snort!
11:17 pm on October 13th, 2012
