A Random Amazon Review We Like

“You can’t beat a Chet and Bernie mystery for a good read. Probably starting off, you should be
a dog lover. You’ll find yourself chuckling a good deal of the time at Chet’s commentary on what’s happening.
Aside from the humor and fun of the whole romp, Spencer Quinn comes up with creative and
very good mysteries that keep you wondering “who did it?” Good for getting you out of a funk and
making you laugh and feel better. I hear the series will be made into movies which is a good thing.”

– Barbara Russell on Thereby Hangs A Tail.

(“Care to comment on the movie reference?” Spence says.

“Not at this point in time,” says Admin.

“Point in time,” says Spence. “Somewhat Nixonian.”

“He’s making a comeback.”)

Gooood morning, everyone! A pleasant review, even if the dreaded “good read” appears. As to the Nixonian comment, I still remember “Nixon’s the one!”

Yipes, mom says it is a 2 step day. Barb was right about boat bouncing, so the 4 things on mom’s list just became 2…a quick shop (5-10 items) and bill paying šŸ™

    Have a motley Monday!

Didn’t get much of a chance to check the blog yesterday until this morning (we were all Teddied up — a lot like being puddled up but with a baby Golden), but a lot is happening. Woo! Woo!
Regarding the one armed man, Rio, brought back memories of the original tv show The Fugitive, where the bad guy was the one armed man that Richard Kimble kept looking for for five years.

    More excellent news.
Half of the Plunderers are going to Alaska! Wow! I haven’t had a real vacation in years (coming to Mpls to caretake doesn’t count). Oh how I wish I could go…I’m going to re-visit this idea.
Perhaps we should start a fund for CHobbit to buy several air beds. Or rent a big house for a couple weeks.

Earwigs are our least favorite insect. They are gross. Barb used to find lots of them out at the farm. Guess who loved them? The chickens. Barb would dump a few into their pen and they went wild. Yummers!

Went on line this morning and checked some flights from Chicago to Anchorage. Just to get an idea of what cost would be. For some reason the prices were around $775 to $800 from OHare and $572-$600 from Milwaukee. Wonder why the big difference since the same airlines were involved. United seems to do alot of flights.

David Axelrod said yesterday that Americans are willing to give someone a second chance, but not a third chance. He is friends with Humma, but said there is no way Weiner is going to win, so he should stop wasting money and space. That was pretty direct for a political advisor.

    North to Alaska?
It could happen. Nana’s niece is moving to Anchorage in the near future so she and her sister would have a convenient place to stay. On the down side she has the same concerns as Melanie about the Stresses of Distant Travel, which makes it very iffy at this point. Then too, there are the costs to consider……

Barb bought 2 Mortgage Lifter tomato plants this May, as that is one of her favorites. They are supposed to be a pink beefsteak type, with large 1 -1 1/2 lb fruits. One is a ML but the other has clusters of small, deep ribbed fruits. There are 6-9 tomatoes in each cluster and they are probably going to be 5 or 6 oz. Not sure yet if they will be red or pink, since none are ripe yet. The plant has regular leaves, not a potato-leaf variety. Any idea what we might have, since it is definitely not a M.L.

Thanks Melanie. Barb had something similar to those when she had to go out and feed during the winter. I often just wear regular walking/hiking sho-es in the winter but, yes, I do have boots–a variety of them depending on comfort and temperatures. You might consider buying boots online and have them shipped to one of us for delivery. Or you can wait until you get to Anchorage–the city has plenty of stores and you can buy what you feel you need (no sales taxes). Boot shopping can be our first excursion. A lot will depend on what kind of socks you plan to wear.

I know that on Alaska Airlines I can take 2 suitcases and a carryon for free but I am not sure if that is tied into my mileage plan or the fact that I joined the Club 49 (free). I’ll look it up later and see what the deal is.

Grizz and I were lucky…temps in Alaska were in the 30’s….but don’t be fooled. It’s not like the 30’s in New York and you will be standing for long periods. I recommend really good wtaerproof, insulated boots. Very important….a very WARM jacket, preferably with a hood. You may still need a hat. Grizz and I bought jackets from Dick’s Sporting Goods and were told, they would be fine. NOT! Warm gloves are imprtant too. Just be careful with Pancho and Lefty. :^)
Thermal underwear is important. Your may want to buy the kind people who play sports wear, like a blue kind of skin. Regular thermal wasn’t enough for us. Good socks, maybe two pairs at once. My feet froze the whole time. LOTS of layers!! Grizz and I wore wore a set of Alaska clothes on the flight. We each had one checked bag, and I had a carry on. The place we stayed had a laundry room, so we were able to do ur dirty laundry before leaving.

Ok, first off – greetings to you all, and Happy Birthday to Mattie, the Winsome Waltzer

Next – the post office mail was picked up today and, oh my gosh, there was the most beautiful passport there. Such and incredible job by the Turtleman.

Third – just for the fun of it, Mama looked up the price of a ticket from Boston to Anchorage in March. A round trip was an incredible $321. Yup, that’s what we said. The Storyteller told her she could go, but she really can’t. She doesn’t have any winter clothes or boots that would come close to handling Alaskan March – she spends winters here trying really hard not to go outdoors. Maybe Rebecca and I can get together at some point and with our combined knowledge post an “Advise for the Alaska-bound” article on Dishlickers. We could have advice for winter and summer travels and include some helpful links to websites.

I am sure I speak for both of us in saying that we will do our best to keep you warm. All Alaskans have lots of winter gear and if we knew sizes, we can probably borrow some of the needed items. Especially those of you who live in southern climates, I’d hate for you to spend money of clothing that you don’t otherwise need.

Wow, I can just drive to T&G’s and fly from there. What are we talking, 1200 miles?

Dawson, silver star for you even if a bit late.

My Alaska relatives always buy so much stuff down here that they mail their clothes home.

I was not sure of the dates, but I found a flight for 354 on Alaska Air. Without driving to MA.

Maybe T&G is looking at one-way price. The one we see is $289 * 2

Nope – the fare we found was round trip – we did a gulp and double check when we found it. The secret to flying is to do a search for alternative airports and be willing to fly on a Tuesday.
Of course being good looking doesn’t hurt.

Well rats. I put in round trip, so I thought it would give me a round trip price. It did not. Hmphh How much to fly to Boston and watch with Melanie and Amalia?

I took a box of old books to half price books for which I got $11. which paid for my new Larry Millet book featuring Sherlock Holmes. I also found a book titled, On The Rez by Ian Frazier, an author whose writing Dad was enjoying (funny) last week.

Sharon!…Wow!…I never expected that little box to get to your place until at least Thursday…sniff!…Just let it hang out till you receive something else in your box…grunt!

Game!…My friend had a really bad day today – I can just tell..sniffle!… But the Rockies game is cheering her up a little bit so far. They are ahead of Atlanta right now. It’s the loser-teams they do not seem to play well against…frustrating!

Dawson – the passport is beautiful. Stamps are on their way back to you.

It’ll be a lonesome old town the beginning of March, but it’s very exciting that so many of you will be in Alaska to support Snowhook, and each other. Take ipaws! Post pictures!

The cheapest we found so far was $572 from Milwaukee, round trip, but we just plugged in random dates in March, weekdays, not actual dates. What dates should we use? Is Feb. 25th a good one?

Dawson, Got your email and thank you.

Barb: If Tuesday is the cheapest day to travel, you are looking at Feb 25th. This will also give you a bit of time to decompress if you have jet lag or travel problems. The Mushers’ Drawing Banquet is on Thursday Feb 27th. This is a separate cost ($75 or $100?–Rose and Griz went last year so maybe she can chime in).

The Ceremonial Start of the race from Anchorage is Saturday March 1. The Official Start from Willow is Sunday March 2.

With so many Plunderers coming up to support Snowhook, we need to somehow get some local media attention. This is a great human interest story and would promote Snowhook and the Chet & Bernie books.
