Carpola! I was side-tracked.
9:25 am on January 21st, 2015
We have someone who wants to start a Race Dog, but we still have 3 Otherwise Dogs who are only partially funded. I am going to open up that Race Dog, as I said I’d like to have at least 1 Race Dog being funded, along with 1 (this time, 3) Otherwise Dogs. I hope that meets with the approval of all of you.
So…..MELANIE is hereby started….let the funding continue!!! WOOO!
9:32 am on January 21st, 2015
Good morning all.
9:32 am on January 21st, 2015
Cherokee is sponsoring Melanie from high atop his big snowbank in the sky since him and the person Melanie both fought so hard at this time last year to stay here with us for a bit longer.

9:34 am on January 21st, 2015
Morning everyone.
Mama had another Corgi before us who lived to be 14. She was healthy until the day she was not. Mama’s grief was so devastating, so retchingly deep she couldn’t function at all. She cried every single day, and couldn’t eat or talk to anyone.
Her Corgi Angel saw her broken heart, and arranged for me to need a home and come to Mama’s attention. One week after her beloved puppy left her arms, she met me, and I snuggled into her lap and fixed that hole in her heart.
We all know that this was arranged by the Corgi Angel. We all know that I didn’t “replace” her Corgi Angel. I simply shared the room in her heart and the light in my eyes reassured Mama that her beloved doggie was still with her.
9:35 am on January 21st, 2015
So unlike her namesake in many ways, but we love her to pieces.
Race on, little Melanie, race on.
9:41 am on January 21st, 2015
As the Herd and Tupper have so wisely told us…We can Never Be Replaced…but if your Heart is Open…we can take our place in it and make you Smile Again.
Big Bear Hugs to Cherokee and his mom.
9:55 am on January 21st, 2015
We now have both Elmer and Gomez fully funded! AWOOOOO!! Thanks Bluecat, you sweetheart. <3
And as I said, Melanie is now partially funded and available for all of us to contribute towards!!! Thanks Cherokee and his mama. And also Doc is available yet.
WOOOO!!!!
9:55 am on January 21st, 2015
Good article, and Tupper, your story made Barb a little teary.
Personally, I don’t think getting a new dog or puppy right away is disrespectful to your old companion. It’s a very personal decision.
The second question to The Dog Lady was very irritating. The lady has a 10 week old puppy that she thinks can hold it for 8 hours while she is away at work. I want to smack her! Some people are beyond stupid.
10:03 am on January 21st, 2015
Came to say good morning, but I see it is time to go see the nice man who gives me papers to get pills, so I will say “hey” and run. Thank you Tupper for helping to heal your mom’s heart.
10:21 am on January 21st, 2015
ML, who is a good girl? YOU. Take care of business and know we love you.
10:30 am on January 21st, 2015
A new dog? I know if something were to ever happen to me (as if), my mom would need a new bodyguard. oh yes she would. I would make sure I found her a good, strong, smart, loyal dog to take care of her if I could not. That is not what Kat or Zeus are good at.
10:48 am on January 21st, 2015
Good morning all–I start the day with a surprising number of things taken care of by others promptly and efficiently! I am not accustomed to this! I am happy. I don’t know how to deal with this new feeling.
(And now, off to get my leg scanned…)
10:53 am on January 21st, 2015
AWOOOOO !!!!! Another Race Dog fully sponsored: Truman (Squishy? seriously ?) !!!! Betcha can’t guess who sponsored him!
11:14 am on January 21st, 2015
How, exactly, and in detail as I need lots of instruction, do I help to sponsor Melanie?
11:22 am on January 21st, 2015
Zoe – it is very easy. Send an email to:
Snowhookdogs@gmail.com
Tell them which dog you want to help, and how much money you are willing to put in.
After getting a confirmation email about your donation, just mail your check directly to Snowhook Kennel

Good article on the Middle of the Pack teams:
http://www.adn.com/article/20150120/schandelmeier-celebrating-mushers-who-finish-middle-pack
12:17 pm on January 21st, 2015
Wow…yes, the second question was, yeah, I wanted to smack her myself. No, our dogs can never be replaced. At guide dog school they used to say replacement, now they (mostly) say successor dog, which I like much better. I still think Karl must have helped someone pick out Leno, because they’re very similar. I mean in personality, they look nothing alike.
A Melanie dog! That’s fantastic, and such a wonderful tribute.
My Melanie’s away at the hospital. She had more heart trouble, which then turned into more fluid, which became kidneys stopped functioning properly, which means she’s getting dialysis. She’s had two (Saturday and Monday), and right now having another one. I know this because when I went to drop off her weekly IV infusion drugs, which the nurse who doesn’t know anything about it argued with me about, she had just left for her dialysis. We are sure she may be either in the hospital or rehab a while longer. That’s kept us a little tied up.
Puppies are starting to eat real food. Well, they started yesterday. Can’t believe how fast the time is going…just over a week and I get to meet them. I’m excited to see which one picks us.
12:26 pm on January 21st, 2015
Best wishes to Buddy and his Melanie. Catching up on the blog from yesterday…
Here is what I think of politics: I don’t usually watch the State of the Union address because you have one side cheering and the other side hating. This country has real problems and people & parties need to stop being opponents and come together and work to solve them. We need to stop blaming and disrespecting and start seriously thinking of the betterment of this country. The older I get the more I think the overall purpose of life is to work to make this world a kinder and more sustainable place.
I read somewhere that Congress has a 15% approval rate by the public. That is unconscionable! The fact that even with this basement level approval rating, 96% of incumbents are re-elected is unconscionable.
It is interesting that in Alaska’s last election, the governor who won chose someone from another party as a running mate and has worked to fill state offices from both sides of the aisle. I hope that is serves to combat gridlock in the legislative process. We shall see.
(I do read the State of the Union address so I can learn of the ideas presented but I prefer not to watch the drama on TV)
Off my soapbox.
12:46 pm on January 21st, 2015
WOO HOO !!! Them Snowhook doggies are just flying off the shelves!
The latest fully-sponsored dog is Maury, and you will never guess who is sponsoring that pup! (okay, maybe you have a good idea). 🙂
Thanks, Teddy!
1:07 pm on January 21st, 2015
Hobbit, you’re so right. I think the Alaska governor has it right. Otherwise, welcome to the Divided States of America. My party is going to save this country. Your party is going to bring hell and ruination and death to us all. I personally can’t tell the difference.
1:13 pm on January 21st, 2015
C.Hobbit: Hear, hear!
Buddy and Leno: I hope that your Melanie feels better soon.
I’ve just been looking at the Snowhook site. It’s fun reading about all the dogs. Go Charlie!!
I’ve begun a new project: Looking at the snake as symbol and the way in which it’s symbolic meaning has changed over time and from country to country. Fascinating!
1:21 pm on January 21st, 2015
Buddy, Please give our love to your Melanie.
Hobbit,Mom and I do watch SOTU, and we sort of like all of that drama, but we agree with your take on the divisiveness and lack of respect. Mom says each party is somewhat responsible, because they like to crank up their base to believe the other side is evil, so they can take in money from those duped people. Those people would be better off sponsoring Snowhook dogs, who do not discriminate between rich and poor, labor and management, Republicans and Democrats. They just run run run! My name is Mama Meash and I approve this message.
1:31 pm on January 21st, 2015
All three of you have valid points. And one would think that with such low approval ratings that they would be a little more introspective and try to get it right.
1:39 pm on January 21st, 2015
Speaking of politics, here is one that has me shaking my head. Oklahoma Senator Jim Inhofe, who is the biggest climate denier in the Senate, is now Chairman of the Senate Environmental Committee. Inhofe is for Big Oil and in favor of the Keystone Pipeway. He wrote a book saying climate change is a hoax perpetuated by tree huggers. Isn’t this sort of like putting the fox in the hen house?
1:54 pm on January 21st, 2015
Yeep!!! There is a fox in the henhouse? Not on my watch, Amiga!
Coming, Fern!!!
3:03 pm on January 21st, 2015
It is SNOWING !!! Yip Yip Hooray!
3:35 pm on January 21st, 2015
I think winter is Leno’s least favorite holiday. When we were out today, and he does this a lot during winter, and I ask him to go “outside”, meaning to find the door that goes outside, he’ll go…somewhere else. Like, “Hey, wouldn’t you rather see this counter? Or sit down? Or, well, pretty much anything else? It’s cold out there!” But then I insist, no we really need to go out there so we can go home, or to the next place, he goes. “Oh, all right. Fine. Oh, hey, we’re going! Let’s go!” And he kicks it into gear. Can’t say as I blame him really, I don’t wanna go out there either. Because, like he says, it’s cold out there!
3:36 pm on January 21st, 2015
I wrote holiday. What’s the matter with me? I meant season. Wow…
3:52 pm on January 21st, 2015
Buddy, winter is one big holiday to me. 🙂
Hey here we are signing in for the Polar Bear 5k. We hiked it, but Tundra and Simba ran it!!!! My godmom fell on all that ice. She was running with Simba, and Uncle Bob was running with Tundra, who finished 2nd dog (by a nose). It was terrible icy on that hike.

3:54 pm on January 21st, 2015
And another of our boy Zeus.

4:08 pm on January 21st, 2015
Look at that face! Who wouldn’t love that face. And Barb is impressed that you have two dogs standing quietly at your side. And you are holding both leashes easily with one hand. Wow!
4:17 pm on January 21st, 2015
Zeus is gorgeous.
4:41 pm on January 21st, 2015
Zeus! Gadzooks!! Hot, hot, hot.
We think ALL politicians are in office cuz they couldn’t even get elected as dog catcher!
4:56 pm on January 21st, 2015
I don’t like dog catchers! Boo!
4:56 pm on January 21st, 2015
T&G, with all due respect, we can’t agree with your use of th word “all”. MOST? Yeah, we’ll give you that. But we do know of many office holders and candidates who sacrifice much and try harder than the dumb shits they serve deserve. There. We said it.
5:13 pm on January 21st, 2015
Mommy says there is only one more full week of January left, and she is glad. Well, not me. There is the most gorgeous cat ever on my January calendar, so I do not want it changed. Nope! As far as I’m concerned, January can last forever (as long as they keep putting pellets in my stove).
5:29 pm on January 21st, 2015
I agree with everything Barb said in her 9:55 post.
Buddy, Good thoughts going out to you and your Melanie.
Beautiful Siber pictures on the blog!
I’m off the blog for the rest of today because I don’t like political discussions.
5:36 pm on January 21st, 2015
Wowser! Winter? WE have lots of fun with winter. Cold and ice on the sushi pond and mud to take in to mom. What could be better, amigo?
5:39 pm on January 21st, 2015
(Darah Thea) Siber Mr. H No wonder I love you so much! NO Politico just dog things 🙂 YOu are my kind of dog!
5:54 pm on January 21st, 2015
Buddy, we join the gang in wishing Melanie well. We will be sending out positive energy to her.
Josh was just here and had a strengthening cocktail before going home to work on homework with the kids. He said the kids are fine but he needed it to deal with Jess, who has no patience with easily distracted children. Lyla is a challenge when it comes to focus.
Forgot to mention that when I read The Distant Hours, one of the characters talked about having a bolstering whiskey. Reminded me of the above mentioned cocktail.
Good news is that Siber’s recommendation worked (hope they read this). Josh was able to get Maggie down the stairs to the basement. He tried to coax her down, which I knew was not going to work. Then he put a leash on her and walked her down, or ran her down is more like it. Once she got down there she ran around like a lunatic! They did it twice, so now I am feeling better about her “issue”.
5:58 pm on January 21st, 2015
Maggie, Who’s a good girl?
6:09 pm on January 21st, 2015
Howlers, I am! Me, me, me, I am a good girl. And who knew there was a whole other world down there!
6:10 pm on January 21st, 2015
Yay! Just saw the breeder says she’s already starting to see puppy personalities (dogalities?) coming out.
6:20 pm on January 21st, 2015
As of now, Melanie is 45% funded, and Doc is 50% funded. I know each of us wants to sponsor other dogs, so let’s get Melanie and Doc properly dressed. We’re rolling!
6:20 pm on January 21st, 2015

Buddy, I must have been reading every other line. Is Leno retiring? We too send our best to Melanie, sounds like she has a rough road ahead.
6:51 pm on January 21st, 2015
Oh wow. They use luminairies to decorate the checkpoints. That is so cool.
6:54 pm on January 21st, 2015
I spoke too soon earlier today. Whoever coined the term “carpola” has my endless gratitude. How very, very apt.
7:05 pm on January 21st, 2015
Diane! Was that earthquake near you? I have been so worried.
7:25 pm on January 21st, 2015
DianeC: Sorry you had to use the carpola word, just when everything was going so well…not!
I survived the bus ride by taking d r u g s and sleeping most the way. All medical appointments done. Next week I will get the results.
Good to see the dogs are being sponsored. Can’t believe how fast time goes by when the Iditarod is looming. Yeep!
BooBear: Loved all the pictures of your beautiful cats. And Howie!

DianeC: What’s this about an earthquake?
8:40 pm on January 21st, 2015
Masquers, quake was near Tehachpi and a low magnitude. Diane probably didn’t even feel it.
8:45 pm on January 21st, 2015
We love Harry Connick. Great singer and he can act, too.
Just had liver with bacon and onions. It was delish!

Am I supposed to get a confirmation email and then I send a check?
9:24 pm on January 21st, 2015
MPM, yes that is the idea. I didn’t get an email from you though. Email address is snowhookdogs@gmail.com
9:24 pm on January 21st, 2015
MollysMom!….Please wait for a confirmation so you know for sure the Howlers received your pledge!…WOOOOO!….Maybe it is a pledge for me to get funded…zow!
9:33 pm on January 21st, 2015
When I volunteered to coordinate this fundraising campaign, Rebecca was doubtful. She was afraid that Kat would get her paws involved. Rebecca met Kat, so she knows those paws are not at all responsible. Oh no. Responsibility is not Kat’s strong suit. I assured her that I alone would be handling the finances and the updates. She breathed a sigh of relief.
9:42 pm on January 21st, 2015
Rio, You would like liver and onions (with bacon) they way we make it. Promise!
9:44 pm on January 21st, 2015
Mama Measkka!…Have you ever been nose-to-nose with Mama Luna?…sniff!…That is like being nose to nose with responsibility and a lot of gruffel-ness all at once…snort!…She can straighten a pug’s tail with one small wiffel!…gasp!
9:45 pm on January 21st, 2015
Meashka, if you didn’t get an email from me, then how did you know I wanted Wyatt?
9:46 pm on January 21st, 2015
Barb!….No, you can pass that plate of liver and onions on down to less discerning palates….gah!
9:49 pm on January 21st, 2015
Rio, I have never met Luna in person, yet I feel I know her well. We are two peas in a pod, Mom says. Girls like Luna and me fall into our mothering (Kat calls it smothering) role naturally. It is the way we role. Play our hearts out, but keep everyone in line.
It is bedtime here. Mom is going to her shelf tomorrow, and will be taking my iPaw with her, so don’t fret if I don’t return emails during the day. I will get to them as soon as I can.
9:52 pm on January 21st, 2015
MPM, sorry. Yes I did receive your email on Monday, and replied to it right away. I thought you mean that you sent me one today. Did you not receive my reply on Monday?
9:53 pm on January 21st, 2015
Shelf!…My friend says she is backed into a corner at the busy-place. I think the Shelf sounds much better…grunt!
10:00 pm on January 21st, 2015
Mom did not mind Day 1 in the shelf, but I am waiting to see how she feels after the newness wears off.
10:02 pm on January 21st, 2015
Nawlins!….Tomorrow Idol will be in Harry’s backyard, New Orleans!…snort!….MollysMaw, Do not miss it!…heh!heh!…I have a feeling it will be so good…chuffle!…Harry is too much.

Carpola!
I just laid down “for a minute” and woke up after bedtime. I was going to watch the Idol from Minneapolis show. Missed it.
I’d better give up these painkillers pdq!
Buddy&Leno: Thinking of your Melanie…and your (soon-to-be) puppy.
Team Snowhook!
Seeing all those sponsored dogs listed in one place is very impressive. It is hard to believe the little puppies I met last year (was it only a year ago?) are potentially ready to race the Iditarod. Sniff. Thanks, O’Howlers, for keeping track of all the sponsorees!
Masquers: Is Raylan on?
12:42 am on January 22nd, 2015
I have been chatting with Microsoft support. They actually fixed my problem in just a few keystrokes. Now I am going to my warm soft bed and I will see if I can lure AbbietheKitty in to sleep with me.
Nighty noodle guys.
GO SNOWHOOK!
12:44 am on January 22nd, 2015
OH, Rio. Look at the list of sponsored dogs again. Look at the very FIRST name. Maybe you have only been reading every other word…
Heh heh heh
