Greetings All!
I love the new cover! In fact, a large version of it would look very niced framed! September 11 is a looong wait.
Rio! I saw the wild fires in Denver,Colorado on the news this morning. I hope youse guys are okay.
Rebecca and all the rest of those feeling under the weather…Hope you are feeling tip-top soon!
Now, let’s see when the blog background changes…..
7:56 am on March 27th, 2012
Looking at the cover a little more closely…It looks as if Chet and Bernie are in a theatre watching a movie or a play….
8:35 am on March 27th, 2012
Hmmm, this cover brings up the question …. What’z up wit da screenplay?
Morning Rose. I just have to pick up and take Jesse home today. Looking forward to it. Still dizzy, sort of sick from this withdrawal carpola. Is it possible to take a warm shower from the inside out???
8:35 am on March 27th, 2012
Cover!…I LOVE IT!..snort!snort!
8:37 am on March 27th, 2012
West!…It looks like they are watching a play about the Wild Wild West!….Wooooooo!Wheee!…Get along little Dawggie!…snort!sneeze!
8:50 am on March 27th, 2012
Melanie: Sorry to hear you are still under the weather.
9:06 am on March 27th, 2012
I think they’re watching a movie. And there’s a haze of light around Chet. Really love the cover.
Melanie: Let time work and your system will be free of the bad meds.
Good morning all.
9:15 am on March 27th, 2012
Movie!…I think you are right. Its not a play, its a movie…snort!…Can’t wait to get my paws on it!…Wooooo!
9:23 am on March 27th, 2012
What happened to Chet’s ear?
9:30 am on March 27th, 2012
Ear!..Oh Brother – here we go again…grunt!
9:48 am on March 27th, 2012
Well, we love the cover too, BUT, look closely at Bernie’s hair cut. Bernie is way too conventional to have that long hair at the base of his neck. He would have a standard, fairly short cut, especially since he is ex-cop, ex-military. Also, we sort of picture him with dark blonde-light brown hair, not almost black. And, sorry Rio, but Chet is supposed to have mis-matched ears. Just sayin’.
9:50 am on March 27th, 2012
Hi Steve!
There can only be one explanation for the disappearing white ear: Chet has a white ear and a colorist. Yes, folks, Chet dyes his ear. It is part of his disguise and it works!
9:52 am on March 27th, 2012
Love the Wild Wild West look of that cover!!! I think they are watching a movie that could have been filmed at Old Tucson. Many western movies and tv shows have been made there. Old Tucson often “stands in” for Tombstone, AZ.
Chet’s ear…lol
9:54 am on March 27th, 2012
Poor Chet’s ear … When will it every get on the cover?
HEY PUBLISHING PEOPLE! Chet having a white ear would draw attention to the cover and you will get more people picking up the book. Spence’s writing will enthrall new readers, they will buy the other books. GOOD WAY TO MAKE MORE MONEY! And some more for our favorite author!
Bernie’s haircut. Maybe they were so busy with the case he din’t get to the barber’s.
9:54 am on March 27th, 2012
And look, there’s Johnny Depp!
9:57 am on March 27th, 2012
Hair!…Bernies hair has always been that length(on the covers)…grunt!… We here like it…sniff!…Except for Beau. Beaus a traditionalist. He likes crew-cuts….snorkel!
10:04 am on March 27th, 2012
Wow! The Book Cover looks even better blown up. Rose, you are right…it would make a great poster. Thinking here the blog background won’t be changed until the book comes out.
B: Yesterday we thought Chet and Bernie were in a theater watching a play, but you may be right…they could be watching a movie. The only thing is the curtains…..
Melanie: Hope you get all that out of your system and start feeling back to your old self. Good to hear Dan’s BP is down.
Wolfie: Careful what you say. JD’s power is far reaching and if it is a movie…well.
Greetings All.
10:06 am on March 27th, 2012
Johnny Depp may NOT be BERNIE!
Enough said.
10:07 am on March 27th, 2012
When you get three academics in a room you’ll have four different opinions. The same is true of non-academics.
10:12 am on March 27th, 2012
Rio & Melanie: The Hair. Yikes! Now that you mention it, it is even longer now. Perhaps Bernie is trying to fit in with those Wild West types.
10:14 am on March 27th, 2012
Barb!…I’m not arguing that Chet doesn’t have mismatched ears…grunt!…I’m saying that the Cover Art has always portrayed them as dark…sniff!…If anyone would have bothered to read my explaination last night about where the mysterious White Ear Cover Art came from all would be explained…grumble!
10:20 am on March 27th, 2012
Rio: Your explanation of last night explained all. Except for the anomoly of the last cover that it is.
10:21 am on March 27th, 2012
Very Good One, Bee!
10:33 am on March 27th, 2012
Melanie, We could see Bernie in need of a hair cut, but this one looks very styled with the top and back being freshly cut and the back long. That is definitely not a Bernie look. More of a Metro-sexual look. Some of these cover artists must not know the Bernie character very well. Gosh, he even wears an old bath robe with girls in martini glasses. Yikes!
You are right about the ear subject, Rio.
10:44 am on March 27th, 2012
Maskers!…The last cover doesn’t fit the mold – who came up with that anyways? …grump!…So I didn’t even take it into consideration…sniff!
10:45 am on March 27th, 2012
Bear is right about the curtains. Only in the old days did movie theaters have curtins.
Rio is right about the ear. I read his explanation last night.
We are in agreement with those that are saying Bernie’s hair is too long.
Do the people that do the cover art even read the books?
11:02 am on March 27th, 2012
that’s anomaly, not anomoly.
Rio: The last cover was/is so wrong. Especially when it is shown side-by-side with the other books in the C&B series. The only thing kool about it was the color…green. Okay, I’ll zip it. That strange book cover has been discussed ad nauseum.
Siber is right. The artists obviously don’t read the books or they would know better.
Now off to change the snow tires, pick up new tabs for the car and fill up with gas. Then a quick stop at the library to drop off a book and back home again.
Wonder if Terri will show up with a new avatar today.

Maybe they put the curtains in there to emphasize that it is a theater. Perhaps on early editions of the cover people said they couldn’t tell. It has to be a movie because the lighting seems too bright to be a play.
Hair. I have always thought his hair was just a tad too long, but maybe now that he is out of the military he is enjoying the freedom of not having the buzz cut. However having it curling up at the neckline light that just doesn’t seem like Bernie to me.
The ear is in shadow. Again. (or Chet’s colorist is on the job) Thanks for the idea, Wolfie)
11:08 am on March 27th, 2012
Wolfie, now you went and ruined my nice lunch of turkey salisbury steak, and fingerling potatoes. SPLORT!!!!
11:16 am on March 27th, 2012
Hair!…Bernies hair has always been this length(on the covers)…snort!…And I do believe the Artist does read these books because she is a dawg-lover. She has two, Fritz and Bruno…snorkel!…I’ve read her blog starting from way back when she first received Dog On It…heh!
11:18 am on March 27th, 2012
Metrosexual. Huh.
11:27 am on March 27th, 2012
We have a charming old theater in town that was THE movie house for a thousand years. They had magnificent burgundy velvet curtains with heavy gold braid roping and fringe drawn across the screen. I remember wiggling with excitement as a kid when you first heard the whirring of the mechanism that pulled the curtains back. They would slide back with enough speed that the bottom of the heavy velvet would become a train for the top of the curtain. It always made me think of a queen sweeping from a room, with her robes belling out behind her.
I always loved that part.
Of course, in those days, they also showed cartoons before the movie….tha-tha-tha-that’s all folks.
11:32 am on March 27th, 2012
Jasper, Bernie is the polar opposite of a Metrosexual!
Melanie, Rachel Maddow was just on tv and I think she indirectly mentioned you. She said she lives in the dirt-road, country back hills of Mass., and she loves it there. She said 7 neighbors share her water source, and was mentioning that because of money spent on homeland security. Are you one of those 7?
11:38 am on March 27th, 2012
Hey gang – did you all notice that we had a late night visitor last night. The last post was from a Bowen0714 who sounds like they could become a Plunderer – except they got the impression that Chet was a Border Collie….
That cover will haunt us all forever.
12:06 pm on March 27th, 2012
Kat: How is your mom feeling today? That was a cute photo you posted last night.
Barb&Magpie: We like Rachael Maddow. She tells it like it is. Seems to be a trait of the good folks in MA.
Rio: What is the blog name of the artist you are referring to?
12:10 pm on March 27th, 2012
I didn’t see that comment.
Did see Steve’s today. HI STEVE!
Besides having a white ear Chet also had a slice taken out of his ear in the first book.
12:18 pm on March 27th, 2012
Fire!…The fire(s) are pretty far away from me and Beau…sniff!…But we can smell them. Yesterday it was very windy and very smokey…gasp!…Someone I know was out walking in 35 to 40 mile an hour wind gusts…heh!…She said, “Never again.”…grunt!
12:23 pm on March 27th, 2012
Oley, We missed your potato question last night. We ordered some Yukon Gold from Gurney that have not come yet. What we planted were a half dozen assorted, sprouted potatoes that were in a basket in the kitchen. They were planted around the 15th or 16th. The sprouts were pretty long so they came up fast, in about 10 days.
We are also Rachel Maddow fans here. She was promoting her new book, which has something to do with the military.
Hi Steve, and hi Bowen. No, Chet is NOT a B.C. No, no, no!
Time for lunch and The Ice Palace Murders. BBL

Jeez, I just posted this on yesterday by accident…
Speaking of mysteries. I have been reading a very interesting mystery by Sarah Caudwell. It is called Thus was Adonis Murdererd.
The author writes in the first person and uses no personal references so you are not really sure if people are male or female although you can infer the sex by some, not all, of the names. There are no descriptions of the characters so you are lost about that also. Some names, like Julia and Serena, are probably female. But others, like Cantrip and Ragwort are mysteries.
It was on one of Mr.Staffs list of good books to buy. He found it when we went to see Shamus (and failed) at Once Upon a Crime.

NOOOO! Chet cannot be a 100 lb. Border Collie!
See here for proof —
Rule out Border Collies since they don’t fit the 100 lb. requirement … Wikipedia: Border Collie male 30-45 lbs; AKC: BC height at the withers varies from 19″ to 22″ for males.
See what a 137 lb. BC looks like!

I thought it might be fun to discuss possible breeds that contribute to Chet’s genetic makeup.
{Please contribute other clues that I haven’t read yet!}
Given the covers on the first two books and text (“100 lbs”) from the second book …
… we look for a (a) dark or black breed or mix (b) weighing around 100 lbs and with (c) natural erect ears. After looking for these traits in the online AKC lists by group, I was surprised to find there were fewer breeds than I expected with those traits.
Going by the AKC pictures shown (for erect ears) and AKC breed descriptions of dogs that might be tall enough to weigh 100 lbs., I thought the following numbered breeds to be the most likely to be in Chet’s mix. Note that many (e.g., Groenendael) would have to be mixed with a larger breed to make the 100 lb weight.
See link AKC Group (and other groups in list).
Toy Group – much too small!
Terriers – most are too small, floppy ears
Sporting Group – unlikely due to floppy ears, few have black heads
Non-Sporting Group – none seem to fit color, size description of Chet
Herding Group –
(1) Beauceron (Ranging in size from 24 to 27½ inches tall at the shoulder)
(2) Belgian Sheepdog/Groenendael (males should be 24-26 inches in height at the shoulder, ears triangular in shape/erect, weight not likely over 85 lbs.)
(3) Bouvier des Flandres (males 24½ to 27½ inches tall at the shoulder, ears placed high and alert)
(4) GSD (males 24 to 26 inches, ears are moderately pointed and carried erect when at attention, most colors are permissible)
(5) Briard (males 23 to 27 inches at the withers; unlikely as they have a distinguished appearance)
Working Group –
(5) Black Russian Terrier (26 to 30 inches tall at the shoulder)
(6) Giant Schnauzer (males 25½ to 27½ inches tall at the shoulder)
(7) Akita – (any color, males 26 to 28 inches at the withers, ears strongly erect and small in relation to rest of head)
Hounds – floppy ears except for Norwegian Elkhound (19½ to 20½ inches tall and 48 to 55 pounds) and
(8) Scottish Deerhound (30 to 32 inches, size from 75 to 110 pounds, ears raised above the head in excitement without losing the fold, and even in some cases semierect)
So, what do you think? Have I missed any possible breed contributors?

Staff: There are four Hilary Tamar novels written by Sarah Caudwell. I read them years ago and really enjoyed them She died in 2000 of cancer. You can get the books on Amazon.com.
Here’s an article about her:

1:59 pm on March 27th, 2012
Terri: I’m only 70 lbs so that eliminates Malinois. You have done extensive research. Alas it is all too much for this dawg. More importantly it is chow-time.
btw. Congrats on successfully uploading your avatar.
2:11 pm on March 27th, 2012
Oh My!
Terri: That overweight Border Collie looks like a sheep! Thank dawg she has been rescued.

Terri: It is nice to see your avatar!
Rio: I’m glad that youse guys are safe from the fires.
2:35 pm on March 27th, 2012
Shamus!…Staff are youse guys going to go back and say “Hi” to Shamus one day?…snort!
2:36 pm on March 27th, 2012
I have always imagined Chet as a GSD mix, but mostly dark brown with the one white ear. Chet would need to be a bit imtimidating looking so there would be some black on his face.
The only thing wrong with my picture of Chet is I don’t think the cops use mixed breeds and Chet went to K9 Cop school.
I’m glad that Border Collie is on her way to a happier life.
3:31 pm on March 27th, 2012
That is one gia-normous B.C.! Her elderly person was killing her with kindness. Take-away instead of carry-out is one of those give away English terms. We saw that article on Fiona yesterday and the video made us cry. Sort of thougth it would be the lead story here this morning.
Dog breeds. Terri, you did do your homework well. Most likely Chet has som GSD or one of the Belgian Shepherd breeds mixed in. The Briard, Giant Schnauzer and Bouvie have too boxy of a head shape. Deer hound is too lanky. The only terrier big enough and tough enough would be an Airedale, which was used a lot by the English during WWI. Beauchron, GSD, Malinois breeds, with something else for size, like mastiff, would be our best guess.
3:37 pm on March 27th, 2012
Clue: K9 Cop school
Thanks! I’d forgotten that one. OK, that clue leads me to this thought …
KNPV = Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging (Royal Dutch Police Dog Association) and possibly other police dog associations …
… are said to sometimes mix breeds in order to get a heavier dog that can take down a running “criminal”.
Quote: “Statistics show the total for the first 25 years, adding up to 822 dogs that received a KNPV title. The six most prevalent breeds listed above plus 5 Airedale terriers, 8 Briards, 15 Beaucerons, 9 Rottweilers, and 1 Giant Schnauzer were titled. The rest (29) were of mixed breed.”
3:47 pm on March 27th, 2012
EAR ! “mysterious White Ear Cover Art”
Hey — we could all agree that that was a temporary white ear due to Chet sticking his ear in white paint. Maybe ???
3:59 pm on March 27th, 2012
Popping in quickly – we had a thought about Chet’s possible background. Maybe something mixed with a Harlequin Great Dane? That might give him the white ear.
And we have seen white German Shepherds, but not harlequins.
Our state police do use mix breed dogs – they look more for body type and personality than for a specific breed. And many of the bomb sniffing and drug seeking dogs at airports could be poster puppies for mix breed rescue.
4:02 pm on March 27th, 2012
Wherever Chet and Bernie are on the new cover, theater or movie house, it must be either a private showing or a lousy play/movie; they are the only ones in the house.
4:07 pm on March 27th, 2012
Yes, TFAT was the story about the circus wasn’t it?

Hi Steve, welcome.
4:44 pm on March 27th, 2012
Steve, I’m hungry. Do you have any dog treats?
4:57 pm on March 27th, 2012
Sammie!…You are on a diet little Missey!…snort!…You don’t want to be sent away to that Fat Farm again, do you?….grunt!
4:59 pm on March 27th, 2012
I hope we have successfully answered Bowen0714’s question from last night.
Welcome Steve and Bowen!
Rio, if you can smell the forest fire as well as see the smoke, it is best to stay out of it as much as possible. There is a thin, hazy smoke off toward Albuquerque in our sky. It must be the Colorado fires. It isn’t bad. I am not complaining.
5:23 pm on March 27th, 2012
My take on Chet’s breed is that he is a BWED, a Big White Eared Dog, much like Belle Starr’s breed is a TCFOG kind of a dog—too cute for own good.
Princess: No offense to Steve—hi, Steve—but I don’t think you should accept dog treats from strangers.
5:27 pm on March 27th, 2012
mattie here. it’s obvious … Chet is one of us. he’s a newfoundland with strange ears. oh oh, alpha on the way. signing out.
5:37 pm on March 27th, 2012
Rio, I had to LOL when I read your comment to Bear. Too funny!
OK, Terri, do you remember that article about the military dog last year who was with his soldier when he was captured? The guy told him to go away which he did, then he came back, killed or maimed the guard, broke into the building, and helped free the soldier. They showed pics of him and he was awesome. Over 100 lbs of pure power. He was a mix of Shepherd or Malinois and something else. I am thinking they said boxer, but that doesn’t seem tough enough. Anyway, he totally looked and acted like Chet, IMHO.
6:08 pm on March 27th, 2012
Mattie: Belle Starr thinks Chet is her brand of dog with an over zealous growth gene.
6:17 pm on March 27th, 2012
Splort!
6:20 pm on March 27th, 2012
Hi Steve, and Bowen!
Rebecca: How are you feeling? How is A.J. enjoying Hawaii?
6:28 pm on March 27th, 2012
Oh, Melanie, have you been splorting all day?
6:38 pm on March 27th, 2012
What Rose? I didn’t splort. Wait (reading the blog) … That was Mattie Splorting over the “over zealous growth gene”!
Staff, ( I think) that poor dog! Reminds me of the lab OTAS and FOTAS took in. She weighed as much as one of our NEWFS! She has now lost 60 pounds. She is looking great. Much more like a dog and not a seal.
6:47 pm on March 27th, 2012
Snort it, don’t splort it. 😉
Wolfie: Isn’t today a big day/step for one of your boys? Oh, I’m hoping for the best.
Rose: I’m still in the middle of this cold, but I won’t complain. AJ isn’t enjoying Hawaii. It sounds glamorous, being sent to Hawaii for training but it is for camp school so he is in a tent all week. I’m glad I’m going to Dutch.
6:53 pm on March 27th, 2012
Dutch Harbor:
Wednesday…Numerous snow showers. Little or no snow accumulation. Highs in the mid 30s. West wind 20 to 35 mph.
Hawaii:
Wednesday: Scattered showers, mainly before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Breezy, with a north wind between 6 and 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
Pondering which one …
6:56 pm on March 27th, 2012
Melanie: I still say I have the better end of the deal. Thanks for the weather report; I need to do laundry tonight and pack tomorrow. I better decide which coat to take.
Lunch is over, back to work.
7:01 pm on March 27th, 2012
I would have no problem deciding…Dutch Harbor!!!
7:03 pm on March 27th, 2012
We took a vote here. Hmm … Next time it’s going to be only 1 paw per dog …
Dutch Harbor won. The Pack is getting ready to blur.
7:08 pm on March 27th, 2012
I’m on my way!! Rebecca will have quite a welcoming committee when she arrives in Dutch Harbor.
7:10 pm on March 27th, 2012
Rio, I am waiting for Dawson to arrive and then we shall go to visit Shamus. Gee I better get her CtD badge printed out. She is arriving in the middle of April. YAH HOOO!
7:21 pm on March 27th, 2012
Okay, that’s Nine Newfs that went to Nome, and Siber-H that ran along side the sled … who else is meeting Snowhook Bella in Dutch Harbor?

Headed to bed. Turning the computer off. Trying to trick it into thinking I’ve rebooted the thing so the wireless will work.
Right now iPaw and Kindles will not hook up to the internet.

Hi everyone – we would like to ask you all a favor.
A friend of ours passed away tonight. She was in this country on her own while her husband and sister were back in Mombasa. They take care of the business there, and she did shows over here to sell beautiful African arts.
She was not what you would call lovable. No one would ever have called her sweet. She was a tough little business woman who packed herself in and out of shows, who set up her large booth by herself and ran it all weekend alone. She would steal footage from your space if she could get away with it, and snag your customers.
But when a fellow artist was trying to get his family out of a bad situation in Uganda to join him in the states, she secretly contributed a thousand dollars to the fund some other artists started.
When an overbooked hotel didn’t honor the reservation for an artist and family, she gave them her room, and slept in her van.
The last time we saw her, in December, she told us that in two more short years, she would be able to return to her beloved Mombasa for good, that she and her husband could finally retire and live together and do all the things they wanted to do.
Tonight, she has left this earth. She was here alone. There is no one here to pray her on her journey, to let her soul travel back to Mombasa, to her family and the land she loved.
Will you please remember her in a quick prayer tonight? Her name was Karolina, but she was known as the Mombasa Moose. She loved giraffes and hot, spicy food and her husband and her home. And while no one would call her “lovable” or “sweet”, she was a good human being.
Thanks – Amalia and Leonard
7:46 pm on March 27th, 2012
Please Creator keep Mombasa Moose’s soul and comfort those who are grieving her passing. Please help us to remember that it is our actions when we think know one else is aware that can have the greatest impact.

Moose!….Mambasa Moose sounds like someone I would have liked to hang with…snort!…I sorry she did not get to live out her retirement with her husband in Mambasa….wuffle!….Dear Lord please take Mambasa Moose in your arms and welcome her into heaven…snorkel!

We are joining with Amalia, Leonard, SnowBella and all of you. Bowing our heads in a moment of prayer for Karolina, the Mombasa Moose. May your spirit fly free to the home and husband you love.

See ya tomorrow.

Ball!…It was windy again today – fires are still raging…grunt!….So tonight instead of walking we played ball…snort!…Heres how the game goes. My friend gathers all three, yes! three! balls together and stands on the patio with us looking up at her and the balls…snort!…Then she throws one ball so it bounces off the patio floor and onto the lawn…grunt!… Beau or I run after it and stand beside it…sniff!sniff!… Then she throws another ball and the one of us who opted to watch the frist time runs after this ball and stands beside it…snuffle!…All the while she is saying, “Bring the ball here! Bring the ball here dammit!”…heh!…So in a last ditch attempt she throws the last ball and Beau and I both go for it and one of us wuffles it around and finally gets it in our mouths…sniff!….Then we both stand there and look at her while she gathers the other balls up for the next attempt…snorkel!

Hello all. Mom just got homefrom one of her lame meetings that makes her leave us.
T&G, thank you for sharing Karolina’s story. We are praying for her this evening.
Mom and Pop and Buddy and T.C. all voted for Hawaii; we 4 vote for Dutch Harbor. So it is tied, and we will need to be blurred to our vacation choice.
Terri, we think you are very diligent in your research and would make a great P.I. Commander Rio may have a big case for you very soon.
Rio, the biggest laugh we got in catching up on all of the posts was your comment to Bear.

Goodnight!…No one slept well last night because of the wind and all kinds of other disturbances…grumble!…So early to bed will make us healthy and wise tomorrow…chuffle!

“Terri, we think you are very diligent in your research and would make a great P.I.” Gee – thanks OleyHowlers. I’m a very serious dog. Though I have to admit that playing fetch and catch are my fave activities.
Barb&Maggie “military dog” story – I’m in awe. Yes, I’m sure Chet is that kind of dog!

I would love to see a video of what a certain pug calls running, lol.
Chet is a very stout Miniature Pinscher.

I just dehydrated some sweet potato slices as dog treats. My Service Dog “Moe” loves them. I should say he is mostly Lab and will eat anything.

Rebecca: Sorry to hear you are under the weather still.
Being in Hawaii in a tent is not how I envisioned AJ’s time there. Yuck!
Belle Starr: If your two-leggeds are gone, why don’t you and your mama stop by?

As an entertainment ‘toy’, however, the magic of the 3D and Nintendo’s usual fabulous build
quality and playful software mark it out as something special.
Once installed the program can be run; however the frame rate
of v – NES is rather slow on a Black – Berry Curve and there isn’t
much that can be done to improve the performance. Also, beware the legalities of Emulation,
you could be breaking the law.
