“I can’t talk too good all cuffed like this,” said Freddie Dancer.

“We’re not using sign language, Freddie,” Bernie said.

Suzie laughed. I knew some sign language myself: Bernie had a few signs he sometimes showed me when we had to be quiet. For example, his hand out, palm down, meant … something, can’t quite think of it at the moment. Meanwhile Freddie was talking.

“I could have painted that piece of crap myself,” he said.

“Any chance you’re claiming you did paint it?” said Bernie. “Because we’ve had it authenticated by Arnold Fetzer.”

Arnold Fetzer: I tried to remember who that was, but nothing came to mind except a milk bone, of very high quality.

“All’s I’m saying is it’s crap,” Freddie said.

“Crap by Martin Ramirez is worth hundreds of thousands,” Bernie said. “How much did you think that film was worth?”

I've always been very sure that I could paint just like Jackson Pollack.
